robbalvey
Hey everybody! This thread is simple! Rather than having a million little threads about everything that goes on at Holiday World, this thread is designed to consolidate it all into one user-friendly thread. Feel free to use it to post updates, trip reports, questions, comments, and of course, general discussion. For pictures and videos of the park as well as past updates, see TPR's Park Index Page. The world's top "air-time" wooden coaster will be the main course at Holiday World's new Thanksgiving section in 2006! "The Voyage is going to be an air-time machine, with riders experiencing a feeling of weightlessness for a total of 24.2 seconds," says Will Koch, the parks' president. "We're taking the traditional out-and-back layout to the extreme, with the steepest drop on any wooden coaster in the nation. The Voyage will be 1.2 miles long, placing it among the planet's top three longest and fastest wooden coasters." A feast of "floater" air-time, The Voyage will feature three drops of over 100 feet, with the first drop's angle of descent a steep 66 degrees. The top speed of the three-train coaster will be 67.4 miles per hour. "We've carved out five underground tunnels for The Voyage‹which is a world record," says Koch. "And some of those tunnels will be wide enough that we'll roar through them twice, creating a total of eight 'underground moments,' one of which will include a 'triple-down' feature." The Voyage will also have two sections of extreme, 90-degree banking. And the rest... is gravy. Other new attractions planned for 2006 include Bahari River, an action river for Splashin' Safari. The Thanksgiving section in Holiday World will be stuffed full of family fun, including a turkey-chase-themed interactive "dark ride," another new ride, large restaurant, shop, games and more. The Voyage will set sail on May 6, 2006, on the opening day of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari's 60th Anniversary Season. THE VOYAGE Roller Coaster Fact Sheet DESCRIPTION: The Voyage, which opens May 6, 2006, is Holiday World's third wooden roller coaster. Located in the new Thanksgiving section, it is 1.2 miles long and provides a record 24.2 seconds of "air time." This steel-structure wooden coaster takes a twist on the standard out-and-back layout, adding a terrain-coaster adventure in the "back" half of the ride. FEATURES: The Voyage includes a record five underground tunnels (some are double, creating eight "underground moments"), a series of dramatic drops (including a 66-degree angle of descent on the first drop), two 90-degree banked turns, and multiple track crossovers. The Voyage includes extreme air-time, extreme banking, and extreme speed. TRACK LENGTH: 6,442 feet (1.2 miles), third longest wooden coaster in the world. RIDE HEIGHT: The maximum height difference on The Voyage is 173 feet. DROPS/ANGLES: The most dramatic drops on The Voyage measure 154 feet (66-degree angle of descent, the steepest drop on a U.S. wooden coaster), 107 feet (51-degree angle), and 100 feet (50.5-degree angle). The lift hill measures 163 feet. EXTREME AIR-TIME: The Voyage provides the most air-time of any wooden coaster: 24.2 seconds (anything less than +.25 vertical G's, average front/middle/back seats). EXTREME BANKING: The Voyage includes two 90-degree banked turns. SPEED: The Voyage's maximum speed is 67.4 mph. Average speed is 41.9 mph. RIDE TIME: 2 minutes, 45 seconds (station to station). RIDE SIMULATION: www.holidayworld.com/voyage_video.html TUNNELS: A record five underground tunnels, including eight "underground moments" and a "triple down" feature in one of the return-run tunnels. TRAINS: Three 28-passenger PTC trains (seven cars per train, four riders per car). LUMBER: Southern Yellow Pine; estimated board feet: 320,000. STEEL: 750 tons, estimated. CAPACITY/HEIGHT LIMIT: 1,200 Guests per hour. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall. INVESTMENT: $6.5 million, the largest ride project in Holiday World's 60-year history. RIDE DESIGNER: The Gravity Group, Cincinnati, Ohio. DenDen
After watching the video, all i could think of was.... "rumored prefessional version of no limits is true?" There were a LOT of similarities of that video, and no-limits, most notibly, the base-audio of the train. It does look like one AWESOME coaster though. It is not the first time NL was used for such a presentation. It's been done quite a few times before. SharkTums
Wait Wait Wait...I'm more interested in the Thanksgiving themed dark ride! Does it involve shooting turkey's? Giving Thanks virtually? This could be interesting. As for the coaster...I'm sure it will be good, I'm not the biggest Shivering Timbers fan though and this reminds me of that a lot. I'm wondering also why they went with steel structure...I guess cost. Good for Holiday World! Elissa "now get back to more water park rides!" COOOOLkid
This sounds awesome! It might be the best coaster for 2006! (who knows...) I'm just hoping that it won't be rough....
CoasterFanatic
I'm wondering also why they went with steel structure...I guess cost. I started thinking about that very thing and the best i could come up with is this: Since the coaster appears to border the woods quite frequently, it seems like a steel structure would keep the base of those tall hills from getting too wide. Hence saving some trees and concealing the coaster. I mean look at the supports for Mean Streaks first drop ... Source: http://www.rcdb.com compared to Hades ... crispy
I think steel, because of the 90 degree banking, and the fact that it can withstand those forces better RCDB says it only going to cost 6.5 million, that is a deal for a coaster like this DAMMIT, HW is like 1300 miles away, that would be quite a road trip
memphish
Keeping the structure narrow makes alot of sense. I really don't like alot of steel/wood coasters, but I think as long as the track is maintained the rigid feeling will be minimal. HW definitly doesn't slouch on maintinence so that shouldn't be an issue. *Digging in for the longest 10 months in some time.*
