Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

p. 2030 - Top Thrill 2 announced!

Recommended Posts

About 99% of people who post on this site at some point or a other compare themselves to "being better than the general public" in some way or another.

Maybe that explains why 99% of enthusiasts seem to annoy the hell out of me. Lol

(In all seriousness though we're both exaggerating with that number)

I think my say, 10 post over the past few years about one topic are hardly "constant post."

For the record, those were from the past few months. There were more I didn't bother to quote because I started to get bored. Honestly I wouldn't have gone back to look if I hadn't felt Bill had a point about the VIP Tours posts, as I had noticed the same thing myself.

I really don't even care. I'm not a mod here and I realize I have no right to tell anyone what to post or not to post. But you HAVE to understand why it was brought up. Enjoy your VIP Tours, keep on being very important and the rest of us will hang out with the lowly general public and at the end of the day we'll all get to enjoy this great hobby we all love so much. Have a great day everyone, especially you DIFTF.

IMO, you're missing out on the best part of a park experience. Having to take your time waiting in line, among the GP, just watching the ride do cycles, you're missing out on one of the best parts when you jump ride to ride in the front row with no wait. There's something about taking your time listening to the gibberish of the GP, interacting with the ops throughout the queue, and the chance of not getting the seat you want.

Sorry I thought I was in the Six Flags New England thread for a minute. I think you have choice of seat on every coaster at Cedar Point. Lol

As of last year this is true about 98% of the time. Occasionally they will assign on Maverick, but its possible they just got rid of that completely in the last two seasons.

Yeah I've never seen assigned seating on Maverick though I also have absolutely no preference on that coaster anyway (which is really rare but it's equally great everywhere).

This sounds stupid but the only ride where you sometimes get stuck in a seat you don't want is (I can't believe I'm admitting this) Pipe Scream. I like the outsides because you spin more, and don't judge me... It's fun. Lol

Well, for the weak-hearted people who don't want to fight crowds and just go to the emptiest row, it's all up to chance. There was assigned seating on Rougarou when I went, this is not to say that you can't request a seat since we asked for the front and got it.

^ I assume the assigned seating for Rougarou was to increase flow and capacity on a crowded day for the "new" coaster . A lot of parks will do that for the inaugural season and then not do it for the following years. When we went for Halloweekends on A Friday night, they did not have assigned seating for Rougarou.

Not sure why coasters at SFNE seem to do it for some of their coasters though. I was kind of disappointed that I didn't get the option to ride the front seat of WC, but I lucked out and was able to get a ride in the butt-tingling back seat. I had assumed the assigned seating was due to it being new, but they also did that on Batman, yet they didn't do it for Bizarro/Superman, which I found a bit odd.

Carowinds did it at every major coaster this past summer and did not let you wait extra for any particular seat, which was maddening considering they did it in the name of "capacity", but did a piss poor job of even attempting to fill whole rows or pair groups of two together on the 4-across B&Ms - or whole rows going empty because they were too slow to fill them. I saw first hand a Fury train dispatched nearly half empty all while waiting an hour and a half to ride, then be denied waiting extra to ride in the front row. I asked why, and the grouper told me I couldn't choose my row "because it makes the line move faster". Needless to say, I'm still a little bit bitter after driving all the way from Florida and getting three rides on Fury all in random middle rows. Cedar Point will always let you wait for a particular row if you request it.

I'm pretty sure DIFTF has managed to bring up the VIP tour in the majority of his posts...to the point where its noticeable. I mean you're 28, not 15. I understand it excites you and really makes your trip great, but why constantly add it in your post? We know you took a VIP tour; you posted a TR!

Guess what I could do a VIP tour too but I prefer to get out the ol' blue cooler, fill it with a 30 of beer, some lunch meat, rolls, condiments, and dorritos. Drive my ass the 3.5 hours from Buffalo at 5:30 am, shotgun 3 beers in the parking lot at 9 am....run to Maverick at rope drop, arrive at said Maverick, almost vomit from the run, and ride said coaster.

Then probably realize I forgot to apply sunscreen and head back to the car, play a game of avoid being sh*t on by seagulls, indulge in some more beer, and get some sandwiches going. Rinse, repeat.

I haven't had a bad day at the park since TTD opened when I voluntarily chose to wait out the breakdowns. Only rode WT and a flat that day. Never got on TTD. Was next to ride and they closed it for the night as it was already after closing.

But anyways, what can I say? My road trips to the Point are Klassy, and those are the best kind of trips to me. To each their own!

^ I think we dropped that subject. Just sayin...

As for Carowinds assigning seats I only experienced that on Fury and Intimidator and they did a superb job on both. This was also at the end of July. I've never ever been assigned a seat at Cedar Point. Every time they try I ask if I can sit in the front or back and they happily allow me.

This. I had the same experience during the day and a half I spent at Carowinds last summer (preview night and opening day). However, I lucked out some how and my two rides I got on Fury were in the front row.

When I went to Carowind for intimidator they asked front or back then assigned, as for Fury, I'm still bitter as well. I had several rides on it and got 3 in the back and the rest in the middle. Even the one time there was a huge family of around 12 right behind us who asked to sit in the front right after my dad and I and they let them, defiantly bitter

Sorry if this has been discussed before but can somebody explain why the connection between cars 2 and 3 is wider than that between cars 1 and 2? I thought it had something to do with articulating because there's no zero car but I don't know for sure and it's pretty apparent in the animation for Valravn. I also thought it would be nice to lighten the mood a bit after all that, lol.

^ I've heard a lot of speculation on the topic, and a lot of "logical sounding" reasons, but never anything that is concrete. The reasons I've heard before are:

1) They already had a working two train model for physics simulations, so they added the third on to the existing model which made things a bit different (the 1-2 connection articulates in the middle, between the two cars. The 2-3 articulates way closer to car 2 than 3).

2) It assists the weight balance on the holding chain, making it slightly "back heavy" to counteract the larger weight of car 1-2 on the steeper slope (using ergonomics to save the chain).

3) It allows a better view in row 3 with the stadium seating.

Any or all of the above could be right, but also should be taken with a grain of salt.

I believe this is exactly why.

^ and ^^ That all makes sense. It's interesting how it's almost unintentionally "highlighted" (it's probably just my nerdy side noticing though) in the animation, but I guess you can never be too precise, right?

Thanks for the responses. It's all very interesting (at least to me, lol).
