ripleybl Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I wish they would have given us more details!!! They make the announcement sound exciting when really it's a sad one.
MiABeta Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I don't think they are going RMC at this point, I feel if that were the case they would make a much bigger deal of the announcement. Its likely going to get the GCI treatment like Ghostrider, which I guess isn't the worst thing but unless they do some major reprofiling, kind of feels like a wasted effort. Ghostrider seems to have a much better layout than Mean Streak, and is worth keeping far more than MS is. Why would they announce the permanent closure of a ride if they were re-profiling it? This is much more likely to be an RMC conversion or a complete demo to free up a bunch of space. Yeah. They made a video almost identical to mantis's conversion which they though was pretty unique, And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do it just for a re profiling. The axe part sounds like it almost could be for the name seing as they would probably change it for an RMC version.
ImNotOneOfYou Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Maybe it's just the trains getting the axe, and Mean Streak will have new trains with wheel seats blocked off and the front seat tilted forwards.

The Geek Mojo Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I know we all want an RMC...But look at all the space they cleared up around the water park. It would be awesome, but I'm starting to think a water park expansion and a RMC coaster in 2017 is too much. Unless Cedar Point is getting all "Universal" and going crazy with addition after addition...Which isn't a bad thing. It's very possible they may just tear the coaster down and leave the space open for a future addition. I do think the water park expansion is happening next year, but I'm not sold on a RMC or GCI reprofiled coaster just yet.
ripleybl Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 If they are tearing this thing down completely, when and what do you think they will build? 2017 or 2018? Woodie or Steel?
The Geek Mojo Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 If they are tearing this thing down completely, when and what do you think they will build? 2017 or 2018? Woodie or Steel? I assume a brand new GCI wood coaster in 2018 if they tear it down completely.
boldikus Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Of course they close it the weekend before my trip! I personally like Mean Streak. I can't stream live video at my work... Was anything else mentioned in the video other than it's closure on the 16th? Is it closed forever or just the season? Here's a link https://twitter.com/cedarpoint/status/760113054738776064 Is that Tony chopping at the wood? LMAO. I love this so much because I hate Mean Streak. Also, I love how many mentions of coasterbill there are in this thread since the announcement.
MiABeta Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'm now leaning more towards tear down because of what he said.
Cyrbuzz Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Maybe they'll send it to Michigan's Adventure. The home of hand me down rides.
coasterbill Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Wait I'm confused... isn't September 16th a Friday night during Halloweekends with limited ride availability? Is that closing day? Why would they even want to staff it that day and if it was open Friday why wouldn't they run it through the weekend? Anyway I'm excited about the news. I like Mean Streak and I LOVE watching enthusiasts get pissed off about it's very existence but an RMC would be a major upgrade (if that is indeed what's coming).
MiABeta Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Maybe they'll send it to Michigan's Adventure. The home of hand me down rides. NO please I think I would need a chiropractor by the end of the season between this, ST and Thunderhawk...
ripleybl Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'll be super surprised and totally pumped if they are tearing it down and building a new coaster for 2017... Can it be done? I feel like it's too late to tear something down in mid September and build a whole new coaster in time for the 2017 season.

RCjunkie Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Finally. The piece of garbage will be gone!!! Even if they just got rid of MS and didn't replace it with anything that would be an improvement to the park. Chiropractors in Sandusky and the surrounding area's are all collectively crying knowing that their business will now suffer do to this decision.
coasterkid124 Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'm happy that I at least got to visit the park and ride it once more this year. I hope that whatever is done with the space is something very useful. I think that it's great that CP is finding ways to expand and rehab older attractions at the same time.

I would think it would have its own capital.
gerstlaueringvar Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 GCI can change Mean Streak into a completely different coaster as well, doesn't have to be RMC. Look at Legend and Ghost Rider. If they can make small adjustments to the layout, they definitely can build a brand new coaster out of Mean Streak.
Running_Buddy Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Going to CP late August. My partner is going for his first time. Glad he gets to experience the roughness that is Mean Streak at least once. Based on the message and video it looks like it's going away for good. If it's getting torn down mid-September is there really any way for them to have a new attraction up and running in that spot by the 2017 season? I think next year will be an off year for coasters and we'll see something major go in there for 2018 if it is in fact being torn down.
IanTajgiszer Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 According to this article (http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/oh-erie/mean-streak-roller-coaster-coming-down-at-cedar-point) Mean Streak will be demolished for future use of the area.
bluestreak Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I vote anything besides a GCI refurb. I just don't think they can make the ride *that* much better. Plus they would have a hard time marketing that and getting people to ride it... at least the GP. To the GP, a GCI refurb will mean absolutely nothing. In my opinion, the only way to get people to ride whatever is back there is to RMC it and rename it, or tear it down and start from scratch with a brand new ride.
jarmor Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 According to this article (http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/oh-erie/mean-streak-roller-coaster-coming-down-at-cedar-point) Mean Streak will be demolished for future use of the area. That's not what the article said. It said . . . According to Cedar Point, the vacant land will make more space for FrontierTown. No other information for what will go in its place has been released. Which is a pretty vauge statement regarding the future of the coaster and the area.
The Great Zo Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 How about a new Frontiertown expansion entitled "Wooden Nickel Village" complete with meals cooked on skillets, bread made out of cinnamon, and a wooden roller coaster themed to criminals on the lam?
thrillrider Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Is mean streak still safe to ride? I mean....there is a crazy guy with axe chopping supports down. How can they possibly run the ride safely?
