chadster
^That's too bad as it was a vital part of the town's economy. A smaller, sketchy pier it was with a Sponge Bob Square Pants knock off dark ride, it was worth an hour or two of your time and had character. But, I can understand if the owner is tired and the costs are too much, just sad for everyone.
Jew
Screamscape just reported that Funtown pier may opt out of rebuilding. Apparently clean up costs alone are around 3 million. Really sad to hear. Guess not every pier has the resources to rebuild. www.screamscape.com/html/us_news.htm#NewJersey If that is true, I would guess that the owner would rather just take the insurance money than deal with rebuilding. LBIJim
I spent a bit of time running through before and afters on an abc stations website, it really showed the overall impact this storm is going to have on that beachside community and how much people loved the place. I wonder how many people live there year round vs 'summer' homes. About 20% of the homes in Seaside Heights/Seaside Park are occupied year round. SharkTums
LOL!!! This is SOOOO Jersey!!! I'm having flashbacks to the Concordia sitting out in the water as a tourist attraction. From the NYDailyNews: Seaside Heights mayor weighs keeping Sandy-struck roller coaster in ocean as tourist attraction Mayor Bill Akers said officials have yet to decide whether to tear the coaster down and that he's working with the Coast Guard to see if it is stable enough to remain as is. Hurricane Sandy knocked this roller coaster off a Seaside Heights pier, and now the mayor thinks it may be usable as a tourist draw. The ravaged town's damaged boardwalk has been removed, and construction on a new one expected to be ready by Memorial Day is set to begin in January. SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — The remains of a roller coaster that was knocked off a New Jersey amusement pier by Superstorm Sandy and left partly underwater in the Atlantic Ocean might be left there as a tourist attraction. Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers tells WNBC-TV in New York that officials have not made a decision on whether to tear down the coaster. But the mayor says he's working with the Coast Guard to see if the coaster is stable enough to be left alone because he believes it would make "a great tourist attraction." The effort to rebuild Seaside Heights, which was pummeled by Superstorm Sandy, is under way. Meanwhile, efforts to rebuild the storm-ravaged town are continuing. Demolition crews have removed the resort's damaged boardwalk. And Akers says construction on a new boardwalk should begin in January and the new one should be ready by Memorial Day. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/sandy-struck-seaside-heights-coaster-remain-sea-tourist-attraction-article-1.1206527

scbt
Well that just made that made my day. I can't imagine them letting it stay there because of all the paint, oil, lubricants and other stuff that is probably not too healthy for sea life. I'd imagine that there isn't anything coming from the coaster that ships don't already contribute. The oil and lubricants are probably long gone at this point anyway. Jason Hilton
This just in from the Associated Press... SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. - A roller coaster swept off a New Jersey amusement pier by Superstorm Sandy won't remain as a tourist attraction partially submerged in the ocean. Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers tells the Asbury Park Press ( http://on.app.com/SagykB) the town and the owners of the Casino Pier are in talks to remove what remains of the Jet Star Roller Coaster. The mayor last week told a TV station that the coaster would make a "great tourist attraction." But the mayor now says that "was not the brightest comment." Casino Pier officials say they are still assessing the damage. The mayor says construction of a new boardwalk should begin in January and be ready by Memorial Day. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/new_jersey/20121127_ap_njrollercoastersubmergedbysandytogo.html?c=r
Steveg1988
What coasters/rides would you like to see for casino pier, and funtime pier in seaside heights nj, their looping coaster and "Star Jet" coaster are gone, and have pretty much a clean slate. Rides i would like to see Some sort of Vekoma shuttle coaster, i know they get a bad reputation but...it would feel right to have one there, to replace the collapsed looping coaster. Schwartzkopf Jet Star, replace the "Star Jet (not a jet star)" with what it repalced, find a decent shape one and use it. Perhaps a wooden coaster for either pier, not sure what one would be the better option. Log Flume, definitely a good idea to have. Wild Mouse, they have one on casino pier and it looks undamaged, but time will tell on that one, if it is too damaged, find another vintage wild mouse of similar or identical design so that childhood memories will live on. Suspended Coaster, no brainer to have, if you cannot get a Vekoma Boomerang, put in one of those. Of course traditional rides, bumper cars, musik express, go-karts, etc. Vintage rides would be preferable for the traditional ones, a blend of old and new, give it a fair feeling to help bed in that this is the new seaside boardwalk, but also have a link to the past that would help people get used to the new part, help cushion the impact of the rebuilding. ArundelHigh Coasters
Depending on would fit, either a Euro fighter, or an Intamin Zac Spin. Star Jet didn't have that much of a spot...so I really don''t know.
larrygator
I suggest we limit the answers to those based in reality. A small family run park like this in not going to be able to afford a ZacSpin. A Eurofighter is probably pushing the fiscal limits, also. Remember, Galveston Pleasure Pier is financed through the family that operates the successful Landry restaurant chain. When the Casino Pier completely re-opens, I would expect it to be very similar to the old Casino Pier, but without a Haunted House. A small park like Trimper's at Ocean City, MD bought a Vekoma Boomerang in 1986, when they were still very new, so you never know what they can afford. If they can't afford it, I would just by some small coaster that is reliable I guess..
scbt
I would love to see a GCI Big Fun. When I first saw it, I thought it would make a really cool boardwalk/seaside coaster.
SharkTums
I like the ideas of a small woodie or a ZacSpin.
XYZ
A Mack Spinning coaster would be really nice here. They can be built with a compact design and I wouldn't imagine them being too expensive. Also, a GG woodie like Twister could be built on the new pier(s).
boardwalkbullet91507
Ehh... I still see them getting one of those portable carnival style coasters. After rebuilding, expenses will probably be too high to get a big coaster.
Jew
Although it would be very cool (and creepy!) if they left it, there is just no way that is feasible. The salt water would corrode the supports. Plus, people are stupid. Someone would swim out to it, climb on it, and inevitably fall to his or her death. beatle11
Interesting question. For Funtown Pier A Kiddie/Family Coaster, perhaps similar to the Miler model they had. A Zamperla spinning mouse to replace the Miler Model they had. The spinning puts a new twist on an old ride (pun not intended). And also a higher thrill coaster. Like it was mentioned a Zack-Spin would likely be way to expensive for them. A small Euro-Fighter might be more likely, as would an S&S El Loco. A small compact woodie, like the Big Fun Model, would make sense.
