P. 796 - Ride closing 10/30 to remove launch and install chain lift!

Recommended Posts

If anyone believes that 80mph stuff then I guess they deserve to be disappointed. This sounds like the classic rumor crap that starts when little info is available on a busted ride.

If you have any knowledge of physics you can quickly calculate that on a 165' drop you need an initial velocity of 20mph to hit 73mph. Which is totally reasonable. To go over 80 you need just shy of 40mph. Launching to the point where the apex is twice as fast as expected just isn't going to happen kids. And as for the rumors of 90mph, you'd have to crest at almost 60. Not. Happening.

It's supposed to be a 40 MPH launch so of the magnets are not launching as they should 80 is very possible. It could very well be hitting the crest around or right below 40

This physics dispute came up months ago right when Dollywood announced the launch was 40mph.. I'm not into physics BUT a lot of people that where said the ride had to be faster than 73 if the launch was 40 unless they trimmed it out at the top.

This could also be whats starting the rumor.. they might be trimming at the top to make it 73.. I'll gladly be carrying my GPS first few rides to see if it can help calculate the speed we travel. I'm curious

The launch stops about 3/4 of the way up the hill. After it hits max launch speed it coasts up the top, slowing as it goes. There are also brakes up there that they could use to slow the train if it's going too fast.

Since you're "not into physics" I'll say it again: There is no reason that they would have trouble with the train going too fast. The launch speed is controlled and there are brakes at the top to correct it if it's over speeding.

Just checked into our hotel at Gatlinburg. There was one electronic billboard declaring LR open but I take that with a grain of salt. Either way looking forward to a fun day at the park regardless.

Actually open? Hmmm. I was down just the other day and just saw the March 2016 or Spring 2016 ones. What did this one say?

Lightning Rod Now Open or Now Open Lighting Rod can't remember. It was on I-40 EB just off the I-75 interchange in Knoxville. I'm curious on this one because it is electronic so it would be easier to pull or change.

You're right, with electronic signs they can just change them then and there. For it to have the words "Now Open" in there leads me to think a weekend opening or early next week?

If you could, try and get some launch video for us so we can see exactly how fast this thing is going now to settle this 80mph dispute.

Funny you should ask, got this when we entered the park. I'm really thinking this weekend, and by some luck today. They don't bring catering in the day before...

Edit, sorry for the mp4, at the park and uploading by phone.

YES!!! The audio is on now!!!! Cool thing is, the speakers are lined all the way up the launch so we'll be hearing that all the way up. I've heard something about strobe lights too but I don't know where that would come into play at. I just love that sound and how this is turning out. As far as opening, this weekend looks pretty bright!

Today is the last day for the free bring a friend ticket with season pass purchase. It will open tomorrow and this whole thing was a ploy to get people to actually pay to ride Lightning Rod.

Hey! You're starting to understand how the world works! Congratulations! (Not trying to be mean, just funny - and agreeing with you!)

Really tho with the quicktime? Can someone convert it to something the majority of humanity can actually view?

.mp4 is an open standard so it should play fine for the majority of humanity. You don't have to have QuickTime to play it. It works fine for me on my iPad and android phone so I think that should cover most people.

Though I really don't understand why people don't just upload it to YouTube and post a link

It loads for me, but doesn't play. Oh well. I'm sure it'll wind up on Youtube sooner or later. Carry on.
