FLIPDUDE
Thats what the news reports say!! Holy f', dude... o_o That's 8 out of every 10 people! That's insane! How come so many people stayed in the city? youd expect at least 2/5 to get out before it striked, and another 1/5 to have survived regardless of it

FLIPDUDE
You said: How come so many people stayed in the city? So I thought you got it the wrong way! I meant how come so many people stayed in the city instead of going somewhere else for the duration of hte hurricane, and ending up part of that 4/5 of the population that didn't make it. martinb
Ok, I'm getting really confused now! When I say its lost 4/5 of its population, I mean that it currently only has 1/5 of its original population, the other 4/5 are scattered around America, I don't know the total amount of people that died, I don't it was many though! rollermonkey
Basically, like the rest of New Orleans, the park flooded when Katrina hit. The flooding caused damage to much of the buildings, rides, etc. I've heard that staffing is a problem, and also the fact that not many tourists would visit the park with the current state of New Orleans. yes, well, that's like going to an amusement park in a 3rd world country Oh, Dude, you don't know the half of it! I just visited a park in South Korea on the east coast, about 45 miles from the NK border. Ugh what a dump! It looked like they were selling off rides to finance the waterpark expansion next door! calcajun
Yeah, and for the record, the park itself is not ok. Everything was under salt water for over a month. Its all just sitting, waiting and deteriorating more eack day. The whole infrastructure is gone, network, comunication, electrical. Then there are every ride went under water. what was above water was damaged by wind and flying debris. Every single gondola on the Big Easy was damaged. I know it is small, but take a close look at my avatar.

Slessie
But I'm just a bit upset that my hella awesome plan to buy six flags passes this year and hit four in one trip has been reduced to a two park trip. Astroworld and New Orleans in just a few months time.... . I never really knew why they closed down Astroworld?
Three
Apparently, the park was sitting on some valuable real estate. Six Flags wasn't doing all that great financially, Astroworld was widely considered one of the worst parks in the chain... you add two and two, and you get the sale of a park. It makes sense from a business standpoint, anyway. Still pissed about it though.
verticalzero
It's sad to see a woodie SBNO, even worse if it gave a good ride and everyone liked it, I wonder if SF consider it worthy to be rebuilt at another SF Park or just destroy it. As CCI built the ride, there would be "blueprints" around and SF can ask "Gravity Group" to build an even better "Son".
methylene
I am not totally surprised by this finding. However I am skeptical about saying it's damaged BEYOND repair. I think the ride for the most part is ok but the soil around the footers had bad erosion. But certainly in this day and age that can be fixed (see Shockwave at SFoT which had the same problem North Texas's geology is hardly comparable to Coastal Louisiana. pvcoasterguy
This doesn't suprise me very much. The ride itself (when I rode in 2004) was pretty bad. The double up was terribly painful, and the entire ride lacked airtime. When we rode in one of the trains, the ride was fairly rough, but not overly so. But when we rode in the other train, yikes. That was one of the worst rides I had ever been on. It's amazing what crappy trains do for a good design. They ruin the good design.
timetrial3141592
No, SF will likely leave it to rot. Big coasters are "bad".
calcajun
Initially i posted their report as an inside joke. I am an "insider" and knew that the news story was a bunch of crock. People were reporting that the coaster was unrepairable before the water was drained out the park. You gotta take what you here lightly untill profesionals give a real report. Kids say the darndest things. The inspection of MZ was completed towards the end of december 2005. Structural damage was listed as 40%. No one has publicly stated yet that it is unrepairable. I doubt that it will be moved anywhere. It kinda sucks.

LOVE SFKK
Wow. That is pretty bad. But if you think about it, thats about right for Six Flags quality. Its a shame too becasue Six flags NO has Batman and Jester, which are two awesome rides in my opinion. Hey maybe that now Jazz LAke is filled with all the toxic water, they will finally stop the terrible jet ski show?. Six FLags NO has always been my number one park for flat rides. I mean they have GOOD flat rides!!! I really hope they restore this park, because it is on the good side for a six flags park Oh yah, i really hope they fix Mega Zeph, cuz that was my 1st and fav. woodie -SFKK

Cameraman
I can't imagine what will become of anything that can be salvaged. The park is going to be tied up in legal limbo for years. Anything that can be saved will just further deteriorate in that time. Six Flags will be battling their insurance company and the city might possibly be battling Six Flags. If the city and Six Flags do reach an agreement anytime soon, maybe we will then begin to know what will happen in terms of demolition or sale of rides in the park. If they do not reach an agreement, then I believe this will be a seriously long-time ordeal and there won't be a pretty picture of a reopening park at the end (either way, it's not going to happen). The saying "You can't get blood from a turnip" best describes both the situation of Six Flags and the City of New Orleans. The only glimmer of hope on paper is that the city would like the park to reopen. But when you visit the area in person, it really doesn't seem to matter what they hope for. I don't know if I've shown this before or if anyone has seen it, but this is probably one of the best pictures of the park in its entirety during the flood www.katrinadestruction.com/images/d/12810-2/six+flags+photo

I really hope someone can come around to restore the park, or atleast salvage what they can. Does it all really just look like crap down there? -Tex
