SharkTums
In my defense, they took the panda's food away and it growled at me. I was pretty sure in that split second that I'd end up on the "When Animals Attack" show. Luckily the chinese lady came back with more food a second later and the panda was nice and cuddly again. BTW, thanks for Season 3 Shane! (Could have done without that picture though!!!!)
montezooma
Here's another one that might top that picture. Kristin was ALL ABOUT swinging from the grips on the train...until Elissa let go of her, then it was a completely different story. I think this picture captures the moment
MagicMountainMan
Seeing the Tomorrowland entrance with out the Astro Orbiters blocking it makes me wish that ride would just go away... The central entrance to Space Mountain looked awesome, too!
montezooma
But I digress, let's get back to some Disney goodness. This time across the great United States to the east coast were a in 1971 a new Disney park had just opened. This souvenir book is not from the opening year but it does pre-date EPCOT. Can you believe there only used to be ONE theme park in Orlando...what's up with that???
KnottsDisneyFarm
Wow, those are some awesome vintage pictures. I like...
Erik Johnson
I had an earlier version of the Walt Disney World book. It is pretty much exactly the same except Big Thunder was not built yet. Awesome stuff!
Six Flags Enthuseast
The photos of Disneyland are seriously amazing and all, but I don't think anything can top this... THAT...EXPRESSION...IS...PRICELESS!!!!! Great pictures. Lot's of detailed stuff from one of my all time favorite parks!
robbalvey
Here is an interesting observation that I noticed when looking at the two guide books back to back. When I look at the Disneyland book from 1978 I think "Wow, this park looks VERY different today" but when I look at the Magic Kingdom book from I'm assuming the same time period, the park doesn't look as foriegn to me as the Disneyland one. And it really makes me think of how much Disneyland has totally changed in 30 years. Even in the 20 years since I originally worked at the park, I go to it today and think "this is not the park I once worked at in 1988." But Magic Kingdom on the other hand seems to have preserved itself a bit better. Many of the attractions I remember from the Disneyland of my youth are now gone (America Sings, Peoplemover, Country Bears, Rainbow Caverns Mine Train, Mission to Mars, Skull Island, Skyway, Inner Space, Circle Vision, etc) are now just memories, but aside from 20,000 Legues, Mickey Mouse Revue, Mr. Toad, Skyway and a couple of other minor things, my memories of Magic Kingdom from my youth are still pretty much intact today. I'm not sure if either is a good or bad thing, just an observation that I made. --Robb
jcrouse
Great stuff Shane! (and congrats on the water park!) I sure do miss River Country. Please keep the nostalgia coming. And just to touch on what Robb said, there are a few spots at WDW that feel untouched (in a good way) - including my favorite place, Fort Wilderness - its almost exactly the same as it looks in the booklet - the same as it was when I went there as a kid. Of course the landscape of the Magic Kingdom is going to look a whole lot different when the new Fantasyland is complete...
Woogle
Great update! It's nice to see that some features stayed almost unchanged, keeping the history alive.
tedten
My parents have a placemat of the the pirates of the caribbean ride that is almost if not exactly identical to page 16 from the souvenir book.
mcjaco
Very nice Shane. I have a WDW book from around 1977 or 78 I've been meaning to scan and post. As well as a Disneyland one from a bit earlier too.
montezooma
Here is a souvenir book from my first visit to Tokyo Disneyland back in 1985 (wow, that was over 20 years ago, I really am getting old). I still love this place and if you haven't been... beg, borrow or steal to get there!
netdvn
If TPR had a like button I'd click it... These are so cool! It really makes me wish I still had most of my old theme park memorabilia from the 90s...
QueerRudie
HOW VERY COOL! Shane, yet again, I'm floored. It's amazing to see how much integral differences there are between something so similar- I.E. the covered Main Street- and the very essence of a park's spirit. (And this 24 hours before I go to Disneyland for the first time, too!) R.D.
Six Flags Enthuseast
Wow, it looks almost like Disneyland.... Except everybody is Japaneese! Great photos. I wish I was able to go to theme parks back then, they still had charm. Modern day parks have great rides with a whole lot of thrill, but very little charm. I'm gald to see some 'charming' pictures of parks like TDL.
gisco
Yhanks Shane, now I'm really missing Tokyo Disney .....again!

larrygator
Great stuff as always Shane, and I recently learned how to add these to the Park Index in a less clunky manner. Less Clunky addition to the Park Index
montezooma
Hey that is really cool! I didn't know I had my own section of the park index. WOW I have arrived!
montezooma
Pirates of the Caribbean This post finishes up my retro Disney introduction to Season 3. Here is an in depth look at Pirates of the Caribbean. Lots of good stuff to read in here and lots of photos of early concepts, models and of the ride. Pirates is still a MUST RIDE for me...every time...at every park...and Disney's original version is still my fave! -Shane and a ride up the lift! Two drops!!!! First a little Pirate background Nice suit Walt! And now onto the good stuff...bringing the Pirates to life! sketch to reality Aye spy me two wenches! a very popular scene in the rides and movie I wonder why they had to wear lab coats? cool model. I wonder if it is still around somewhere at Imagineering? The End...or as they say in Pirates..."Dead Men Tell No Tales" IMO Walt Disney World's version is the least successful of all the pirate rides. the ghost
This is so awesome. Last spring break we were staying at the Howard Johnson near disneyland becasue my friends like great uncle owns it, and I stayed up until 3am watching two hour and a half specials on pirates and haunted mansion. This is probably my favorite "volume" of the attic so far. The Die Hard Disney Fan Ghost
montezooma
Are the pictures from the Pirates book showing up for anyone out there? When I open the page not all of them download, was wondering if others are having the same problem. I may have to re-load them if you are...let me know Shane

STR8FXXXINEDGE
The first 5 photos load for me, then I just see the file names of the rest. I'm really excited to check this installment out. Pirates of the Caribbean was always my favorite when I was a little kid. I haven't ridden it since 1986, so it's nice to re-spark some memories!
