Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

P. 2038: Top Thrill 2 reopens on May 3rd!

I am asking this question here just because the issues Cedar point has been having gets talked about more then other parks. Just trying to figure out what kind of daily, weekly, Monthly  maintenance coaster should be getting if any to prevent breakdowns

I know each night they all get checked and repaired as needed, and over winter everything is pulled part and put back together. People keep blaming poor maintenance on the rides going down a lot. I have no clue what other things can be done to help with this.

MF seemed to run one car part of a day and 2 cars for a few weeks. TT2 has a lot of sensor issues and other rides have had longer issues. how much does heat humidity . play into this. Is new technology creating more headaches.

To access the mazes this year during Halloweekend will be an additional fee! $10-30 depending on the date you go.

Three thoughts:

  • Wonder if each person who buys this will get a wristband or lanyard-type identifier?
  • Wonder what this will do to maze lines/crowds?
  • Wonder if all Six Flag parks will implement this up-charge this year?

So long as the quality hasn't dipped, I'm fine with this.  I had a big problem with this model at SFGAdv because the mazes were so awful, but if it reduces the wait for the mazes, I'm good with it.  I'd normally buy a Fright Lane at legacy CF parks anyway, so this might accomplish a portion of that goal at a fraction of the price.

EDIT:  I did also notice that particular mazes also have sponsors (Midnight-M&Ms, Eerie Estate-Skittles).  If those mazes have advertising plastered all over them on the inside, it will truly be a sad day for the industry.

I also noticed that aside from the whole The Conjuring experience, there is literally nothing new.

Looks like Kings island will have the same pay for houses thing

All new-SF parks will, except for KBF and SFDL, per their press release: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/six-flags-entertainment-to-unleash-biggest-halloween-season-in-history-with-debut-of-the-conjuring-beyond-fear-interactive-experience-302525869.html

I bet it's a wrist band. Otherwise, one person could buy a lanyard and then pass it to the rest of their party.

I did book a Sept 11-13th stay at Breakers Express which included Fright Lane on Thursday night. When I called the park today, I was told they would honor that package but not offer it going forward.

As someone who has been to Knotts, Sea World, and Universal for their Halloween events, the houses at CP always seemed VERY lackluster. Will they make the houses better this year for those who pay, or is it just another way to make a buck? We'll see.

Looking into the pricing for the Haunted Attractions Pass, it looks like the "Haunted Attractions Express Pass" is substantially less money than the Fright Lane passes used to be, so for someone like me (who always got Fright Lane), this actually works out in my favor haha.

Knowing that the haunts aren't worth my time, how are the lines on the other rides in the park during haunt?

Brutal.  As bad as summer if not worse.

Even though it’s disappointing to see something that was once including costing extra now, I much prefer this as an alternative to what some other parks do where they close the park at 5 or 6 and you can’t stay for the rides without an event ticket.

Out here in the West Coast, haunt attractions at theme parks have been either an upcharge or a separate admission ticket all along.  I don't know how you all got away with inclusive haunt attractions for free all this time.  That's mind blowing to me, you all have been riding the gravy train all this time.

And yes, it has been a wristband.  They usually will have it change colors nightly, so it can't be reused.

I tell people it is typically the busiest time of the year. Columbus Day weekend and like the last weekend of the year draw massive crowds. Like parking lot is full people just parking in the grass. everything is 3 hours longs.

Not sure how busy Columbus day is now as a lot of places stop giving people that day off work.

But if you can do a Thursday night and  Friday trip you can get a pretty less busy park. Friday night Saturday and some Sunday just a disaster. But the vibe over all  great.

I just got this e-mail from the Express Hotel, which I have booked for my Halloweekends Trip.  It looks like if your room package included Fright Lane for Thursdays, which they all should have booked during the time, they are converting it to a Haunted Attraction Express Pass.

Hello,

We're excited about your upcoming visit to Cedar Point's Express Hotel. In preparation for your visit, we’d like to share a few updates.

HalloWeekends presented by SNICKERS® brings back our midway scare zones and live shows, included with park admission. In 2025, our terrifying haunted mazes will only be accessible to guests through the purchase of a Haunted Attractions Pass.

•What does that mean for you? Due to the event changes, Fright Lane is no longer offered at Cedar Point. Instead, we’re delighted to upgrade your Fright Lane to a Haunted Attractions Express Pass!

•What is the Haunted Attractions Express Pass? The Haunted Attractions Express Pass unlocks access to five terrifying haunted mazes during HalloWeekends presented by SNICKERS®, including a single entry to The Conjuring: Beyond Fear, an all-new, SCREAMium experience where you’ll navigate iconic scenes from The Conjuring Universe to lock away cursed artifacts before supernatural chaos is unleashed. This new immersive experience is unlike anything we’ve ever offered before!

•What’s included in your upcoming stay? Your overnight accommodation and admission to the park remain the same, but instead of Fright Lane, you will now receive a Haunted Attractions Express Pass, valid for Thursday night only. Anyway guys my trip was everything I hoped for and more. The only bad part was my mom didn’t want to ride much. None of my guy friends or coaster buddies were available this summer (work, kids etc etc). But my mom did surprise me. She rode Sirens curse, gatekeeper, Valraven(the GP seem to adore this one) and I somehow talked her into riding Maverick even though she had read how intense it was. She walked away with Maverick being her favorite by far! If you know my mom this was a BIG plot twist lol.

even if she didn't want to ride much, it's amazing you got her on Siren's Curse, Gatekeeper, Valraven, and Maverick (the biggest and "scariest" coasters in the park for non-enthusiasts).

there is ZERO chance I'd get my bf on Siren's (that tilt), GK (hanging off the sides with nothing underneath?  no way), or Valraven (looking straight down?  nope, he'd faint).

so great job on that, and glad you enjoyed it.

As some of you may know I am the guy who put off his vacation when Dragster had its accident and I decided I didn’t want to come unless it was replaced or “remastered”. Then when it did come back reimagined I once again stopped my plans when it went down early in the season. And boy am I glad I did wait(more on that later).

I stayed at hotel breakers with my mother from July 14-July 19. So I got 4 full park days and a half a day when we arrived because we got to the park at like 2pm.

I’ve never done a trip report before so if this is a little rough bear with me. I have tons of thoughts, hot takes and opinions I’d really like to share.

Let me start with the good. Immediately upon arriving they were able to accommodate our early check in request and had the room ready. Room was tidy, had no bad smells and had a perfect view of TT2(as I had requested lol). Immediately the hotel staff made us feel very welcome and had no issues answering our questions or taking our trash away. They were very very quick to respond to all requests such as extra blankets or coming by to pick up the trash(we were told to leave it outside the door). This kindness extended to the ride ops and all park staff we encountered. Everyone was super nice!

The rides! After hearing on Facebook so many awful accounts of rides being closed that simply wasn’t my experience at all. Yeah Millie and Maverick went down twice at two inconvenient times but other than that I barely ever saw a ride closed.

Let’s start with B&M’s. First thing I did was ride gatekeeper in the front row on the left. Starting the ride off with an inversion that flips you over the tracks was an awesome sensation! I really enjoyed it and the gate elements added a lot of fun to the ride experience. Rougaru was meh in terms of layout and honestly I didn’t enjoy it enough to ride more than once. Ironically I think my opinion of it would be far better if it was still a standup ride. But it was by no means bad and I didn’t find that my head banged around too hard. Raptor was awesome! My favorite B&M in the park by a good margin. It had a great layout with wippy inversions and a final helix that seems to go on forever(my favorite part). Unfortunately I do agree with the people who find Valraven very dull. It felt completely forceless to me and honestly I only have two good things to say about it. The smoothness and that last inversion gives you a little bit of hang time. I’m simply not much of a fan of Dive coasters

Speaking of Forceless, let’s get to Millie. I have heard this ride called Millennium forcless for as long as I knew it existed. I got a front row seat for the first ride and was immediately struck by the view, the videos don’t do it justice. The first drop was awesome but I immediately greyed out in the helix and went on to grey out twice more in the layout. The ride was smooth and fun but I absolutely did not find it forcless at all! I do prefer Fury but this ride has aged VERY WELL IMO. I greyed out on that first Helix every single time.

Magnum. Honestly respect the ride for its history but I hated it. Just too painful and I have massive bruises from it. Corkscrew, Gemini and Blue streak were also not very pleasant to be on and frankly I rode them just to say I tried them lol. The only two coasters I did not ride was Iron Dragon and Cedar creek mine ride. Wild mouse by Zamperla was fun! The only thing wrong with it was its very short layout. Great family ride.

Let’s move on to the other Zamperla creation and my new number one coaster. TT2 was worth the wait and then some. Being thrown back at 100mph at like 350 feet was simply incredible. Both in view and strong floater airtime. Going up that top hat was really quite intense and being jerked over it into the downward spiral was nuts(especially back row). It bordered on uncomfortable but man I absolutely loved it guys. I have a TT2 blanket on me as I type this :)

Sirens curse was very fun and while Cedar Point isn’t lacking in great coasters this was more than a solid addition. My only gripe with the ride is that I wish it had a bigger drop. The layout after the drop was really good and had no down time(great pacing). And man it was potentially the smoothest coaster I’ve ever ridden. The Vekoma at my home park is night and day difference in smoothness. Also that light package for nighttime is absolutely gorgeous and the on ride audio was super neat. Not to mention the very good theming around the queue. It’s not Disney, but they clearly cared and it shows.

Next up we have two absolute gems! Maverick and Steel Vengeance. Both of these rides lived up to my high expectations. Mavericks low to the ground layout and snappy elements remind you that size isn’t everything. The launch under the station is a genius way to keep the layout compact. And boy at night you feel like you’re getting launched into the wall. Both Maverick and Vengeance are better at night.

Steel Vengeance was completely insane. Like to the point I’m still not sure if it’s a great ride just because of the sheer intensity. The layout and ejector airtime simply can’t be appreciated by a forum post or a YouTube video. I would argue that as great as the first half is that the second half is even better. Visually just going through all that wood was so disorienting in the best way possible. And you really feel out of control. It’s probably the most intense ride I’ve ever ridden. I think I do prefer Maverick simply because I found it more comfortable as Steve was hard on my legs. I also loved how the rides very much feel like rivals and that the park embraced that fully with a backstory.

The flat rides were good! Max air and skyhawk were standouts. I found power tower to be disappointing. You simply don’t drop far enough imo

I really don’t have many negatives but they do exist. I think the employees being forced to ask every single time if you want a souvenir cup even if you’re holding one got old fast. I was very polite to them as I was informed beforehand they get into trouble if they don’t ask. It made me feel sad for them because you always have A Holes who you know treat them badly over it.

The breakers wasn’t disgusting or anything but it certainly didn’t feel its price. I understand they’re getting away with that though because it’s simply a 5 star location and the convenience is ridiculously nice. I feel spoiled staying on site.

The all season drink plan was so sooooo worth it. Getting to fill your body with power aide came in extremely clutch in the hot weather where it’s a struggle just to stay hydrated. I also really liked the food. Cheese on a stick didn’t disappoint me and the portion of fries with my meal was very large! The macaroni and cheese was to die for as well. We ended up eating outside the park one night at a place that was called Brick oven bistro or something like that. We loved our food and the price was very reasonable.

Anyway guys my trip was everything I hoped for and more. The only bad part was my mom didn’t want to ride much. None of my guy friends or coaster buddies were available this summer (work, kids etc etc). But my mom did surprise me. She walked away with Maverick being her favorite by far! If you know my mom this was a BIG plot twist lol. Unfortunately on our last night at the park we were in the queue and it broke and never reopened, so she never got her night ride in.

Cedar point simply can’t be missed and I’m already hoping to return in a few years. 10/10 trip. I am so jealous some people get this as their home park. And with Kings Island not being too far it’s an embarrassment of riches for Ohio.

Thanks for the report.

I think Siren's Curse would have had a larger drop if it was actually meant for Cedar Point. They always go for the record breakers.

I agree about Breakers. At face value, it's way overpriced. The location however, is priceLESS, in my opinion. Truly "a place like no other." The rooms though... eh. I went the first year of the upgrade. They were plain and small, but a nice place to be. This time around, ours was really showing its age with plenty of wear and places that could have used a deeper cleaning job.

I wouldn't want CP to be my home park. Having it not be a destination would make it less special, in my opinion. There's an advantage of having the mediocrity of Six Flags Saint Louis as my home park, because it makes places like CP and KI feel that much better and worth the trip.

It sounds like you had an awesome time. I'm glad you got to experience moments like that with your mom. That's special for sure.

Cheers

Just because it sucks there doesn't mean it has to suck everywhere else.

Amy is right in her apprehension of the parks scattering advertisements throughout the mazes. It wouldn't surprise me. At the very least, I'm sure advertisements will be pretty obvious outside of the mazes. Or, have there always been sponsors? I haven't been paying attention.

Hopefully parks will eventually learn they can squeeze more money out of guests by not only charging for admission, but then up charging for every "premium" roller coaster.

"Get unlimited thrills on Blue Streak, Corkscrew, Magnum, and Millennium Force with all standard admission tickets! Enjoy extreme thrills like Maverick, Steel Vengeance, Valravn, Gatekeeper and more with the premium pass, or premium unlimited!"

Orlando was humbling enough to realize people will pay for anything as long as it becomes the norm.

Sorry about the rant. I get cranky on night shift.

Hey as Bert said that's pretty good for a non-enthusiast. I ride almost everything with my son but I'm the one that got him involved in the first place so Kudos to Mom's everywhere. We've been to CP many times but my son was there on Monday 7/28 which turned out to be the recent and already infamous flood day. He was at a weekend event in Columbus with some non-enthusiast but willing friends so they went up just for the day. However, unlike good old Mom here they were late getting going not understanding his pleas to get there early and be first in line to get in and beat the rope drop crowd to at least one of the new coasters. They took so much time getting in, doing SC and TT2, and grabbing food that was all they had done when the storm hit and they were then trapped in Millie's station for 4 hours. Only had about 2 hours after that so just got on a couple other rides. Although good on the park for opening up anything at that point I guess.

His opinion is SC was great but as a huge fan of the original TTD he was not at all enthused about TT2...............thought it was horribly slow and declared no need to every wait in a line for it. Said if it was basically a walk on then sure he would ride again but won't cry if it's a one and done for him. Just reporting, don't kill the messenger, lol.

Oh wow so you have a partner who isn’t necessarily head over heels for coasters?

May I ask how old the 2 of you are? I’m in my early 30’s and some of those rides can really toss you around. I’m hoping so badly I age well so I can ride at  80 lol

What is the biggest ride your BF has conquered ? I’m talking whole world. Will he ride TT2 ?

I know the answers to most of your questions BUT I will let Bert speak for himself! 😉

However, on the age issue; I am 57 my son is 22. We started riding big stuff together as soon as he was tall enough so around 7 for him and 42 for me. I hadn't ridden much in my 30's and it was kind of a rediscovering of a love for theme parks and such. Needless to say the first few trips took some getting used to it all again and I found myself bracing and holding on too hard, that was exactly the wrong thing to do and made me sore as hell. As soon as I started riding more like a drunk person and just allowed my body to move around more naturally I stopped having issues. Now that goes along with some good judgement, I don't really ride SLC's (or hang and bangs as a fellow older enthusiast lovingly calls them) or things that wack me in the ear (looking at you Ninja at SFSTl), or super spinny that I know will make me sick (some motion sickness issues have gotten worse as I aged). In other words as you age you will also know your tolerances and body limits better and better and learn it's beneficial to skip this or that so that you can enjoy almost everything else. Also, needless to say the better shape you stay in and the healthier lifestyle you lead the better your body handles it all. I mean my son and I did a two week Europe theme park trip with ACE last summer for his 21st birthday; 14 parks in 14 days and I was fine without taking daily pain meds like some people there. BUT I also didn't try to ride every single coaster like he did and took breaks when I needed too.

Heading to CP on Thursday and it looks like rain. Hoping that changes to Wednesday or Friday, but if its raining, any sense of what to expect to be open / run? Hoping that it'll be most everything unless there's lightning in the area, but not sure if there are rides they haven't been running in not ideal conditions like TT2 or Siren's Curse. The website FAQ claims to have a list of rides subject to closure but leads to a 404 message when you click that link. :(

Most the coaster if not all will close if they have rain. High winds can shut down  rides also. Looking at the weather report. Looks like a chance of afternoon storms but nothing that will last that long and could miss altogether.  might just have to found a place to relax for an hour or so as it passes.
