SFGAm is a great park, fairly balanced between coasters, flat rides, and water rides, from a family perspective. But for being in our country's third largest metro, with no nearby competition from another Amusement Park, could be MUCH better. I do understand this and I do wish they could have fully tapped their potential. They don't seem to challenge the height limit very much, but I don't think they feel comfortable to push it either. I've seen the complains by the villagers when they tried to add a 150' coaster, don't get me started on those villagers. LOL Great America is jam packed full of rides to the point it has a lack of scenery. It would be nice if they had more land in the first place. King's Island and Cedar Point are beautiful with plenty of scenery. Given SFGAm's location, the park is almost always packed full of people. Combine this with the fact they don't always have the most efficient ride loading, dispatching, an unloading process, leads to ridiculous weight times. People tend to hate their food, but I've been okay with what I've eaten there, though I can say it was a tad overpriced.

 

But in speaking specifically from a coaster standpoint, SFGAm, with 14 coasters, is in the top 5 in terms of coaster count, which doesn't mean much. I believe they Six Flags would have made them their Magic Mountain if it wasn't for the height restriction. But another thing to consider is Magic Mountain is all coasters and few rides. Great for coaster enthusiasts like myself, but not so great for a family park.

 

This all being said, SFGAm coastersThey are a little on the short and small side, but the track layout on a few of their coasters really makes up for their size. Goliath, though short, had an innovative and insane layout. Viper has a lot of air time for what it is. Demon is still kept smooth for an Arrow. Some people preferred their X-Flight to Gatekeeper because of all of it's tight turns, though I, myself, prefer Gatekeeper. It stretches across the park and adds speed. I could feel the added g-forces of X-Flight, but it just felt a little sluggish to me.

 

I like SFGAm, and even SFSTL, which no longer shows up on the radar of world's greatest, and I will continue to visit them. But make no mistake, I like KI better and Cedar Point is above the rest. BTW, the theme parks I've visited thus far are SFGAm, SFSTL, KI, CP, Mt. Olympus Theme Park at Wisconsin Dells & Lakeside amusement park in Denver, CO. But I do know the stats of almost every other park. My group & I are planning on hitting either the east coast or west coast next year. If we hit the west coast, Magic Mountain will surely be first on our list.

 

I agree with you concerning Mean Streak. I would not be surprised if it shattered every RMC record and contained every RMC element either.

 

 

 

40th Anniversary is not a marquee milestone, like 25, 50th, 75th, 100, 150. Btw, what did GAm get for their 25th? They got V2 and Deja Vu.

 

Calling GAm "one of the world's best parks" is pure hyperbolic nonsense.

 

On Mean Streak, I expect some kind of record, CP loves to set records. Biggest hybrid drop and fastest are what I expect. On the time frame I'm going by the logic.."under promise and over deliver". They maybe aren't sure they can get it done by opening 2017 so don't announce it till you get a progress report late december. Then people won't be lambasting them if it's late.

If they would get something large for 2020, I guarantee that the anniversary would either not be mentioned or thrown in there to say "Hey 150 give us your money". Cedar Point did an amazing job advertising the 2000th anniversary of the Gregorian Calendar, so I wonder if they'll get something big for 3000.

GAm is not jam packed b/c of rides to the point of no scenery, it's somewhat packed b/c of nonsense games and other junk. They have also made poor use of space and made odd decisions of placement of things. They waste a ton of space in prime areas and space in general with stuff like the Pictorium, which is utterly useless.

 

Wait times only are bad on weekends and holidays. The park is not always packed full of people. Any weekday during the summer unless BAFF, it's short waits for everything but Goliath.

 

Viper and Demon both need to go once SF decides to give them a new coaster. Both are well past usefulness. VR isn't saving Demon, which is just a bad and outdated coaster.

I was trying to ask if either coaster had anything that commemorated the anniversary while pointing out that both additions for said anniversary were nothing special.

It's a good thing we all have different opinions. Minus the walk to and from Viper, it's a stellar wood coaster, easily one of the best WOOD coasters in the chain. And I would rather ride Demon than any B&M at the park... I *LOVE* Demon. It took me plenty of years to "get over" the new kids on the block, but the Demon is once again one of my favorite rides.

 

I would vote for Superman and V2 to leave, if anything had to leave. But see that's ok... we all have opinions... The park has something for everyone; every coaster there has it's fans. Sorry to hijack the CP forum with stuff about Great America.

 

Back to Cedar Point! They're really moving on whatever is happening to (RMC) Mean Streak. Perhaps they will try to outdo (time-wise) Holiday World's "66 days at sea" nerve-wrecking (but awesome!) publicity campaign they did for Thunderbird.

My group & I are planning on hitting either the east coast or west coast next year. If we hit the west coast, Magic Mountain will surely be first on our list.

May I please suggest east coast Carowinds (Fury & Afterburn), King's Dominion (I305 & Volcano), and Busch Gardens Williamsburg (Beer & Awesomeness) over west coast Steam Punk Yololand? Knotts would be the only basis for a debate in my experience.

Not to de-rail the last few pages of I don't know what...with head bowed in shame, admitting to heading to the park with my son for the 1st time in 30+ years next Sunday...his 1st visit...my first since I was much younger than he is...staying on-site so have one hour early admission and purchased Fast Lane Plus...so...a few ?'s...can those be processed at any entry or only the Front Gate?? What is a good course of action or will we pretty much be set with the Fast Pass Plus?? Goal is to hit every coaster we can and then re-rides as time permits...hoping the weather cooperates for a great day because that is all we have...

You can enter at any gate for Early Entry. Normally I'd suggest going in the Marina gate and then running to Valravn but you have Fastlane Plus so you can do whatever you want. There's no set course of action. I guess hit Dragster and Maverick early since they're unreliable and Maverick can have a bit of a wait even with Fastlane. Note that you can't use Fastlane during Early Entry (but you don't really have to) and that not all rides are open for Early Entry but it includes Valravn, Millennium Force, Maverick, Gatekeeper, Tiki Twirl, Cadillac Cars, Dodgem, Skyhawk, Cedar Downs, Midway Carousel and Kiddie Kingdom.

 

Iron Dragon isn't on Fastlane so if you see it with a short wait hit it, but honestly a full queue is only like 20 minutes.

Like I said, you can find examples of parks that just so happen to get major new rides during anniversary years but it's not a trend. Parks make investments based on what makes financial sense, not because they decided to pitch in and get the park an anniversary present.

Unfortunately I don't think you'll be able to get early entry and I don't know of anyways to "sneak in" if that's what you're referring to. Honestly though if you have fastlane plus you'll get more rides in than you really need. Have fun!

I'm going to be In Michigan this weekend so I'm deciding to head over to cedar point for one more go. I already know I'm not going to get there by the parks opening, maybe 2 hours or so later. My question is would it be okay to wait till I get there to purchase FL plus, or get it online?

I actually work in guest services, and unfortunately no, the 2017 pass benefits won't start until 2017. Sorry about that! And no, there's no other way to get in to early entry without having a platinum pass or staying at a CP hotel!

^This. I couldn't imagine going to the park without a FL+ on a weekend. Even with FL+ you'll be waiting at least 20-30 minutes on a lot of the coasters.

 

Since I've become spoiled rotten with FL+, it made me long for CF parks like Carowinds and KI where the FL+ lines are almost non existent and they take you right to the station. On busy days at KI you can get about 4 laps in 20 minutes on Banshee. If you're into that kind of thing...

I've done a few of the past Sundays at Carowinds with no Fast Lane. It was walk-ons on everything. They weren't even assigning seats early in the day anywhere. I guess that was one good thing that came out of the Charlotte riots...

Thanks for the sugestion, and all of these parks you mentioned are on my list. My grandmother was born and raised in Forrest City, North Carolina, which is only an hour west of Charlotte, so I've been meaning to go there and look through a couple cemeteries for genealogy purposes. And I know somebody who now lives in Kinston, who has been trying to get me to visit. Between these 2 places, one passes very close to Carowinds if we take the Charlotte route. So Carowinds would be definite must once I make it to N.C.! I can also see the mountains and the coastline while I'm done there. Than we could possibly loop around and catch SFOG and/or Dollywood on our way back to Illinois.

 

We may even keep driving eastward into Pennsylvania to explore one or more of their amusement parks like Hershey Park, Kennywood, Knoebels or Lakemont, before turning south. Pennsylvania has the most coasters of any state, and many are historic. Even the oldest operating coaster is there. We could even head further east and hit SFGA and SFA on our way to Virginia if we have our Six Flags Passes. One of them really wants to ride Kingda Ka badly.

 

If they vote to turn northward into New York and New England, the choices would be Lake Compounce, SFNE, Darien Lake, and/or Great Escape.

And I'd love to take a ride on the Coney Island Cyclone. Of course, there's several other theme parks in that area, but they're rather tiny.

 

If we go west, it would be SFMM, Knott's, CGA, SFDK, or possibly the Disney, Universal and/or Sea World parks. And perhaps Adventureland in Iowa, Elitch Gardens or Lagoon on the way there.

 

Where we go and how many parks we hit depends on our budget and the amount of time we will have.

^ speaking of Mean Streak and its destruction - while in line for Eden Musee last weekend I did notice they already have chunks of track marked on Mean Streak that I'm assuming are for removal. I'm not sure how common it is for RMC to remove track in such small parts when it comes to revamping coasters like this - but regardless it's pretty cool to see this happen.
