Knoebels Discussion Thread

Does Twister have as many laterals as the Legend did before the 2015-2016 offseason modifications (which I loved)?

FWIW, the last time I rode Legend (in 2014), I felt the need to ride very defensively on many of my laps. I almost never brace myself to that extent, or at all. I don't remember wanting to do that on Twister, which I last rode in 2014 as well. However, it's absolutely up there in laterals, and even airtime on a good day.

And yes. I would say there's never any shame in spending all your money on Fascination, but I think I managed to bring shame to it last time.

So I just randomly bought a motor home last week...anyone ever stay at the Knoebels campgrounds before? I assume that if they are half as kick-ass as the park, it will rule?

Any campground that has a kick-ass amusement park AND it's own golf course must result in one of the first trips that we do in our new RV. Although it's entirely possible that Hershey could be in the mix as well.

Or I just say eff it and take an entire week off of work and do Knoebels for three days, Hershey for two days, Dorney for one and visit my sister for a couple of days in A-Town.

I love thinking and drinking...all whilst posting on TPR!

^Yeah, it sucks that they don't serve beer at the park, but I get it.

When it comes to closet drinking, I'm one of the best, my friend. Certainly not a problem as I can mesh with the best of them...Conservative Christians, Mountain Folk, City Folk, Seniors....human parking cones, Teddy Bear people, carnival barkers, an old lady wearing Kid 'N' Play hair & human fire hydrants.

Every summer. 9 days 'til I'm there again!

It's basically what you'd expect from Knoebels; simple, clean, and friendly. It's relatively basic; sites for tents and campers, with power hookups and all. Bathrooms with running water, though they're...well, as others have mentioned the bathrooms aren't the highlight of Knoebels. They're passable though. A camp store with the basics and lots of treats, and a place to buy buckets of firewood. Most of the "kick-ass"-ness comes from it being at Knoebels, really. Waking up to the sound of Twister testing in the morning and wandering on down into the park before it actually opens. Just...being there. Finishing the last rides of the night at the park and just walking up to your tent or camper right there.

^^ Thank you!

In checking out the website, I see that Knoebels owns another campground a little further away (Lake Glory). I assume that the one next to the park you would have to book a year in advance, or would that just be for the major holiday weekends?

My plan would be to go over a weekend, but not on a holiday weekend. It would be so much nicer to be able to have the park right next door - although it does look like Lake Glory offers a free shuttle service, which is cool.

I don't know, you'll have to just call and see, but when I go, usually sun-tuesday or mon-wed there are usually free spots.

I think I know why Phoenix has been down. I was at the park yesterday for some Knoebels goodness, and I found these:

In other news, the sky is falling.

Actually, since Phoenix was still using one train operation, I couldn't get a good feel for how the new air gates affected capacity, but it obviously didn't help it. Twister's station on the other hand is still wide open.

This is pure evil, evil I say! #FreePhoenixAirGates

It's really surprising that they have been able to operate it without air gates for as long as they have. Especially with the strict standards in the industry today. I don't think that this will hamper operations too much. It's not like seatbelts were added. The crews will still be able to quickly check trains, and the gates might even make getting everyone behind the yellow line quicker.

Nooo why would they do anything to a coaster with such beautifully fast operations. I loved everything about the old set up.

what was the old setup?

No gates at all, just rows open to the station. When the train pulled in and stopped, people would get out as everyone in line moved it. People knew what they were doing and it was shockingly fast. There is a video of the 20 second dispatch and when I went I witnessed it in person, time and time again.

From the time the train stops in the station to the time it is dispatched again was 20 seconds. In 20 seconds they could empty the train, fill the train with new riders, clear the ride platform, check every restraint, get back in their places and dispatch the train. It was magically and pretty much unbelievable.

The fact that in the picture above, everyone is out of the train and they still have the air gates closed is very sad.

There I was... enjoying a nice Monday afternoon drive and Boldikus had to text me with this lunacy. How is it that everyone's been fine for almost a century but now they decided that people have obviously gotten dumber and might get themselves run over by a roller coaster train if there wasn't a gate there to force them to not be idiots?

WTF?

(To be fair this won't impact operations at all though)

If one rides it all the time and knows what to do then it's cool, everyone is a winner.

Can't remember if there are rules sign posted at Twister but I tell you damn kids these days always ruin it for everyone.

20 seconds is impressive but MF crew at CP runs a great operation, best so far I've experienced.

This is absolutely a safety / standards thing, I would bet that they're legally required to completely empty the train and clear the platform of guests before letting new guests in. I would also bet that Twister will be getting gates as well very soon, if it hasn't already. I'm sure someone who gets bored over the next few days will find it in writing.

Also, in fairness, during double train operation, people are usually waiting at least ten seconds or so after the crew has made their rounds for the second train to climb over the double-up anyway.

^ Maybe it's the way they're served, garnished, plated, that makes the difference in taste?

Sometimes, just how the same exact food "looks" when served, can have a bit of influence

on how it "tastes" to different people.

This truly does bum me out a lot. This is one of the little details I always include when ranting about how great Knoebels is to people. It has always been remarkable how quick operations were. Certainly, if they open the gates when the train comes to a stop, no damage done. The gates have served their purpose at that point. If they keep them closed until people leave, that will honestly slow things down a decent bit. We'll see! I knew it was only a matter of time.
