The Knott's Berry Farm (KBF) Discussion Thread

P. 651: Montezooma's Revenge project terminated?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, this event (and the other ones this year) are almost certainly for the locals. My family lives less than an hour from the park and usually go dozens of times per year, so it was a no brainer for us to visit Taste of Knott's because we miss the park and wanted to support them.

With that being said, I completely understand why somebody would not want to travel a significant distance for this. I most definitely wouldn't.

I just wish there were something more than food and retail.  If there were shows or some other form of entertainment I might be enticed to make a trip from Vegas but as it stands that's not worth the 4-hour drive.

they've had some video of an old guys band on the big screen at the stage.  does that count? LOL

With GCI's introduction of their Titan Track (steel track introduced at IAAPA last year), I wonder if Knott's is interested.

I know Knott's wants to keep GhostRider a true wooden coaster. However I can't help but wonder if putting that steel track at high stress areas (like the bottom of the first drop, or various places in the second half) is attractive for the park. I know they dump so much money into maintaining that ride each year. And don't get me wrong, the ride is currently running great (well, when it was open... sigh). But when it comes to something long-term for the coaster, I could see Knott's jumping on it.

Thoughts?

I believe the highest stress areas on Ghostrider were retracked with Ipe wood instead of the Yellow Pine traditionally used. It's significantly stronger and denser which may be why the ride has held up so well now five years after the retrack. If the Ipe is doing its job for now I doubt they'd see reason to replace it with Titan Track any time soon.

Maybe in the long-term, but I hope they start with the GCIs at Kings Island, Worlds of Fun or Valleyfair and leave Knott's alone until they know how well it works.   I see myself being really selfish here but Ghostrider is one of the best things in the park and doesn't need to be messed with unless necessary.

Kings Island? You mean the one that has been open for 3 years?

Oh, I could definitely see Cedar Fair installing this track on other GCIs in the chain as well. I just brought up GhostRider because it operates 365-year-round and probably cycles way more than any of the others, and a solution like this may be more long-term and viable for a park that doesn't have a proper off-season. Just something interesting to think about given how much the park treasures the ride (and rightftully so).

Sorry, should probably have read RCDB better if I wanted to make a list of GCIs that I have never ridden but I am willing to possibly sacrifice before Ghostrider.

Let me help -

  • Literally every single other GCI ever made except...
  • Wildcat
  • Troy
  • Thunderhead
  • Ghostrider

People already want Mystic Timbers retracked? What is wrong with the world?????????

Yeah, Mystic Timbers is running just as good as the day it opened.  Maybe he was referring to the Racer or the Beast?  However, I don't consider either of those rides overly rough or unrideable.  In fact, I'm pretty sure they have both had some re-tracking done in the past few years.

On Sunday, November 22, Theme Park Review was invited to experience the Knott's Taste of Merry Farm event, the next in a wonderfully endless string of events at Knott’s Berry Farm!

The tasting card has raised $5 in price compared from the last event to now be $40 for adults with 5 food tastings. Junior tasting cards remain at $20 for 3 food tastings. The value of this additional bump can be seen in the plentiful park decorations, and wonderfully creative entertainment spread throughout the entire park!

A few tips if you are going to attend the event:

-We recommend arriving at noon for the start of the event, as the crowd level picks up throughout the day.

-Many food items can be found at multiple food locations, so check to see if one of your desired items can be found at a location off the beaten path.

-The food lanyard is handed to you with the hole punch at the top of the card, causing you to have to awkwardly turn the car to read it. However, there is now a secondary hole punch on the bottom of the lanyard so you can flip the card around and easily read it from your perspective.

We love these continual Knott's food festivals, giving us a reason to come back again, and again. Thank you so much to Miranda and the Knott’s team for your hospitality!

Plan your visit quickly if you are interested, as only a few days are still available! Visit this link for more details:

We are so excited to be back on the farm!

01b.thumb.jpg.39b55b4d65c0b81d2de7072b6a885b6b.jpg

We started with Cupid's Corn Chowder Soup. Rich and hearty, with great flavor.

02.thumb.jpg.e0af32d43546bff3061bbb7c430151d4.jpg

Prancer's Pesto Chicken Pizza: The pesto flavor was loud and proud, making for a great slice of pizza.

03.thumb.jpg.17a3f7624f298280cfe0d9ad6f575c06.jpg

Tater Tots topped with turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce. Once I mixed all the toppings in with the tots, I found myself smiling when I would compose a "perfect bite"!

04.thumb.jpg.38ac622b923be812ea095fe6472d83c7.jpg

Gyro with butternut squash slaw, tzatziki, and pickled red onions in naan bread. Loved this Indian/Middle Eastern dish. The slaw and tzatziki helped classify this as a "lighter" dish compared to many of the others, which helps you pace yourself instead of quickly giving you a feeling of "I'm entirely too full and I'm only on my second food item!"

05.thumb.jpg.ba0b433899f44acd210c1b52cd792b78.jpg

Cold Salmon Winter Salad. Another "lighter" dish, packed with a ton of flavor. Featuring a decent portion of salmon, I consider it to be the most premium ingredient at this festival.

06.thumb.jpg.cdbc0201cc01fbfd62291a144fc8f66f.jpg

Back to Thanksgiving! Vixen's Turkey Burger with cheese, cranberry mayo, and stuffing on a pretzel bun with fries. This is it! This is the winner! Ding, ding, ding! Better than the tater tots from earlier, all these Thanksgiving ingredients just work so well on a pretzel bun.

07.thumb.jpg.45d4e340a4d8b1e85ab38b9b4b0c1b63.jpg

Rudolph's Winter Pear Lemonade. Totally refreshing, and the right option as the thought of having another food item after everything else at this point was too much!

08.thumb.jpg.b2b8aaa85adac37491640ce51594f636.jpg

Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake Bar. Everything about this is perfection!

8b.thumb.jpg.225948e848dc279fee900cd541b1a24d.jpg

Ending with Comet's cinnamon bun with a maple glaze and candied pecans. This was the closest thing to the famous Knott's Fun Bun, for this festival, and was a pure sweet delight! A perfected ending to the foodie feast bestowed on me by the Chefs of Knott's Berry Farm.

Here is a look at the non-food highlights of the event.

First, we loved dining on the bumper car platform!

11.thumb.jpg.23061eed70a13df43292bd255c145c67.jpg

Up the ramp to the Charles M. Schultz theater, you can meet a few Peanuts members.

12.thumb.jpg.299c35ca7ef16735e1bee4bb7c55d6f0.jpg

This was a live 50s/60s radio broadcast that was amplified across the entire Boardwalk area of the park. So much punny holiday humor!

13.thumb.jpg.1ae2411b303e790ccf016ba7af13d82d.jpg

Our absolute favorite entertainer was hanging out underneath the Hangtime coaster. Douglas Fir was trying to sell a tree with "a lot of character" to the passers-by. He had us laughing for quite some time as we sat nearby enjoying our food.

We ended the day with a stroll through Camp Snoopy to enjoy the wide array of holiday decorations. This continues to be such a nice touch, as everyone seems to enjoy the playful scenic elements in this area.

Here's some random night shots from Taste of Merry Farm.   Camp Snoopy looked the best at night, imo.  I guess I like the lights up the trees thing the best.

Announced today on the park's social media accounts:

Quote

After careful consultation with local and county health officials, we have made the unfortunate decision to cancel the remaining dates for Knott’s Taste of Merry Farm.  We are disappointed that we are unable to continue this special event for our guests and supporters, but we know it is the right decision based on the information we have today.

Guests who have purchased a tasting card, for 12/11 through 1/03, will automatically be refunded in the same form of payment used for purchase. We expect all refunds to be processed by December 26 and to post to your account 5 to 7 business days following processing.

If you have a Knott's Hotel reservation during the closure dates, please call 866-752-2444 for assistance.

Select shopping and dining (takeout only) locations within the California Marketplace will remain open. The Christmas Crafts Village and other shops within the park will open on select dates (entrance to the area and parking is free, but capacity will be limited to allow for proper physical distancing).

ICU beds are at capacity in Orange County, LA County isn't far behind.  Wear your damn masks, people

Also, stop coming to Vegas.  We may technically be open but there's nothing to do but gamble and ride the stupid ferris wheel.  Shows are all closed and that includes the ones that just reopened with limited seating a month ago.  Spiegelworld (Absinthe, Atomic Saloon, etc) just fired nearly everyone on Monday and they're packing up to move to Australia.  Things are rough.

Toughest mask mandates in the country for months and months. When will masks start working?

Not to derail this thread any further, but a huge part of the problem is there not anything actually tough about them. They exist, and some businesses (like Knotts when they were open for all their food festivals) do great at enforcement, many others don’t.

The Southern California region on its own has a population that is larger than all but the state of Texas.  The odds of being able to contain a virus in the region are zero given that millions of those people work “essential” jobs and there are probably another million who still believe it’s a hoax.

Masks help and we respect all park rules here. End of story.

That being said, it is absolutely fair to criticize how our Governor has put all businesses at a huge disadvantage by rewriting the guidelines a few times with no prior input.  Changing from tiers, to colors, and now to a regional system without notice makes it almost impossible for any park to invest in trying to create new experiences like Knotts had done with the “taste” events.
