That was totally by chance too...I was down there meeting someone to pick up a present for a friend. I originally thought it was a plane taking off but just happened to turn around and see the ride cycling.

There was some activity in the station, but it looked like mechanics inspecting the train.

Folks, NASCAR races at Las Vegas next weekend, and Speed: The Ride is in their NASCAR Cafe & NASCAR section. This is not happening by accident.

That's a very good point. I'm wondering if it'll open next weekend and then promptly close again after the race, or if the ride has been saved.

If they're spending the money to get it going again, recertified for 2009, etc. I can't imagine them just closing it right back down.

I could see it running very limited hours, but other than that it will probably be available to ride this year.

That makes the most sense, I really miss the roar that Speed: The Ride made. Even with the OTSRs this ride is still amazing!

I think you're probably right. For one thing, I highly doubt the NASCAR cafe suddenly becomes the place to be on the strip just because the race in town. For another thing, they would have to sell a lot of rides on the coaster to make it worthwhile JUST for that weekend!

My guess is they probably just figured "why not?" since their redevelopment plan for the property is on hold. Might as well get some revenue from the ride instead of having it be an eye-sore on your strip front property.

I got to ride this amazing coaster in summer of 2007 I thought it was closed I didn't see it cycling and the casino itself seamed pretty dead. Anyways I find the ticket booth, get my ticket to find out the ride is about to close like any second, I ran my ass off up to the station to find nothing but the ops in the station and their looking at me like what are you doing here? were closed! lol. They let me on anyway I have the whole ride to myself Great ride sweet launch blazing down the LV Strip Amazing the whole ride just seamed so unreal to me like it was all just a dream. Yet to let me know I wasn't dreaming once I returned to the station I was relaunched Thanks again to the Speed crew that night.

I also didn't find ME at NYNY to be as bad as people made it out to be, it wasn't great, but it wasn't that bad imo either.

Canyon Blaster was great imo I rode it over and over and was the coaster out of the three that suprised me the most. I'm thinking small arrow (ouch)coaster no big deal turns out imo there was no ouch and I loved it.

This is amazing news. I've been planning a Vegas trip for the end of March, and I was assuming I'd only be riding Desperado, Canyon Blaster, and Manhattan Express. After High Roller was taken down, and Speed was closed, I feared the age of Vegas coasters was coming to a close. Just the possibility that they could reopen this launcher by the time I get there is making me giddy like a school girl.

Lucky enough I'll be in Las Vegas (middle of the strip mostly We'll see if I head down to that end of the strip) this coming weekend so I kinda hope it's open. I'm not sure if I'll ride it as I've ridden it many many times and while fun, it's not amazing, and This is a "budget" trip for me lol. thanks you MOb bosses for free booze at the casino!

I wish I could visit Sahara myself to see if the rest of that NASCAR-themed area was receiving some upgrades & refurbishments to bring it up to a more 2009 look, along with Speed. Last time I was in there, that whole looked VERY dated/neglected, and what NASCAR fan, or anyone for that matter, would want to spend much time in that evironment?

And Joey, I'm not sure you understand NASCAR fans very well. When 200,000 fans descend on a place for a weekend, whereever it is, NASCAR anything becomes the place for that weekend. Sahara already built a NASCAR area in its casino, and therefore would be doing itself a major disservice for just writing off the race's crowds, and just ignoring a crowd of that size because NASCAR only comes for one weekend a year (which to a facility like Sahara, should equate to 2 weeks, the weeks before & after the race weekend). After all, why even have a NASCAR area if you're just going to totally ignore the one period of time a year when NASCAR is actually in town?

Sure they plan on operating the coaster for more than just the weekend, but my larger point was that it really seems like someone just noticed the race on the calendar and decided to whip the area back into some kind of shape using that date as a kind of deadline. Cost justification and motivation has to come from somewhere right?

NASCAR coming to town means just as much to Vegas as the NBA All-Star game did in terms of how many people it brings to the area, only NASCAR comes to Vegas every year. If I owned a casino with a NASCAR area like Sahara has, I'd be doing the same thing they're doing. At least get your major eye-candy people-drawing coaster operating again!

Believe it or not, if it has anything to do with NASCAR or racing the week of a race...It's the place to be.

I heard that the Cafe actually makes the majority of it's year just in the week of the race...
