California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

That's odd. I wonder why they didn't take the opportunity.

I don't think it's really needed. The portion of the queue you spend the most time in is already shaded. You're not up on the platform for very long.

They did recently paint the walls in the flight deck platform a grey color which is welcomed, as it doesnt radiate heat like an oven as much as the old bare wood walls did.

RailBlazer's queue is almost completely shaded.

This was already covered in this thread a while back. It's a bigger process to add queue covering than just 'putting one up'. In order to do so, the park would need to apply to rezone some of the building + the cost of permits to go with it. And in some areas of the park, the surrounding buildings would need to be re-enforced to support the new covering.

If people would say , “The capital originally intended for CGA was repurposed for KI instead”, that makes more sense. But saying a coaster went to park A instead of park B... there’s absolutely no way

Oh yeah, no complaints alright. I just hope all this virus crap doesn't affect our 2021.

Just found out not too long ago the parks in our area can reopen but Santa Clara county is forcing them to stay shut. In other news, scbb might be the first to open under newsoms new guidelines.

^ Nice report and pictures!

I'm heading to this park for the first time in about 20 years the first week of August and have a couple questions based on your report. Does Grizzly always open in the afternoon? And how was the Railblazer line throughout the day? I'm planning on getting to Railblazer first thing and assuming I love it like everyone else I'll get Fast Lane to ride it a bunch throughout the day. I mostly care about Railblazer and Gold Striker, since that will be new for me as well.

Yes, Grizzly always opens later than the rest of the park. The time it opens is different each day, but they always have the opening time posted in front of the entrance (see my photo) when the park opens. Dispatch times are TERRIBLE, like 5 minutes per train, so a station wait that would be like 5 minutes elsewhere can be over a half hour. So you definitely want to be first on it if you want the credit without waiting for it. The ride is not rough or negative in any way, it's just a flat line, it just doesn't really move the needle. The long dispatch times arent the crew's fault though, it has an absolutely ridiculous restraint system which just makes it take forever, there's not much they can do about it.

Definitely hit RailBlazer first because it will have the most consistently long line throughout the day, though it still wasn't crazy when I saw it. I checked back on it at about 2 in the afternoon and it looked to be maybe 45-60 minutes or so. The queue itself is not very long, based on that it seems like the park is counting on fairly efficient operations. FastLane was pretty much immediately load onto next train all day.

Gold Striker gets really busy in the beginning of the day because it's right in front of the park entrance and people go there early because they see it first. Wait until at least halfway through the day and it should be down to 15 minutes or so if it's not an especially busy day. It has gotten rather rough lately, I actually went straight from riding Gold Striker as my last ride at CGA over to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk where Giant Dipper was my first ride, and that 1924 coaster was a significantly smoother ride than Gold Striker.

Thank you for all of this info! Not sure I'll bother with Grizzly unless I happen to be near it when it opens. The ride looks pretty boring from what I can tell and dispatch times that slow can be so frustrating.

Visited the park tonight to get the two credits I didn’t have...

Railblazer is great. I actually think the inversions slow the pace down. Would love to see more airtime Hills in a future version, since the airtime is all ejector insane airtime! Only running one train.

Goldstriker is tracking a little rough, but is a fun twister layout. Hope they take care of it in the offseason!

Only one train? They don't handle it the same way as SFFT with Wonder Women where you have 4 trains and it is slowly moving through the station. I believe they had 3-4 trains there from the reports I saw. How long of a line does Rail Blazer get with one train?

I didn’t get there until 9:30 on a 10:00 closing and used single rider, so I was out in 15 min. But they were quoting a 45 min wait with about 50 people in line.

I didn't notice an official single rider line when I was there, they were just asking for single riders out of the standby line. Where were you doing Single Rider?

Dann, I wish I knew that 4 days ago.

I just asked if they had single rider and the guy at the front sent me through fastlane.

In my experience, while single riders and Fast Lane holders share the same line, people with Fast Lane are given priority. I had Fast Lane and they were consistently seating me before the single riders ahead of me in line and also asking which row I wanted. It appears they just use the single riders to fill in the gaps... which is how a single rider line should work.

I'm glad they make sure Fast Lane users have priority. I'm all in favor of single rider lines, but they do "devalue" line-skipping options when both save the same amount of time, if you think about it in those terms.

H O L Y C R A P

I just rode RailBlazer and I still haven't collected myself in response to it! It may be short, but goodness, it's like a mini Maverick or something. So forceful, so smooth, and so fun! You all need to come ride it.

(I know, I'm a little late to the game.)

My final ride of the day as I'm waiting for a row to be assigned, I saw one kid in the Fast Lane line who didn't look like he was with the others. The grouper was putting people behind in into rows (but I thought the kid was just being ignored at first). Then after I was assigned my row, I heard the grouper say to the kid "single rider, right?" But it still did not strike me that the kid was a single rider without a Fast Lane band. And I didn't put it all together until I talked to Joey a few days later.

Went to the park this afternoon to get my first rides on Railblazer. It was incredible! My new #1 in California, displacing Twisted Colussus. Incredible pacing and airtime. I liked sitting solo, and it’s really cool how your feet are basically straddling the track.

It also helped that the park wasn’t crowded. Waited 10 minutes each to ride Railblazer two times. They had riders enter the Fast Lane entrance, maybe because the line was so short? The grouper wasn’t taking requests. I asked for the back and was denied. The crew was efficient, helping gather loose articles and closing restraints. Everybody was very friendly!

Overall the park was clean and the atmosphere was nice. Gold Striker seemed to be getting a little rough, especially toward the end. Flight Deck was great as usual (rode front). Patriot wasn’t as rough as expected (rode front). Grizzly was surprisingly smooth and fun in the back (running two trains!). Demon was also holding up well. Railblazer really helps round out the coaster lineup. Very impressed with my visit!

Line that short, why didn't you ride more?

I had a feeling someone would call me out on that. Yes, in retrospect I should have gone for more rides, especially since I didn’t get a front or back or ride. (One of the trains had the front seat blocked with tape, maybe a restraint issue?) I was a bit on a time crunch and just wanted to get some rides and experience the park. And honestly, the two rides I got on RailBlazer were really intense. I was satisfied!

For the best ride experience on RailBlazer, is the front or back preferable? Thanks.

Depends. If you don't mind uncomfortable restraints and love copious amounts of forces, go towards the back. If you prefer the views the coaster provides and a "smoother" ride, go to the front.

Assuming the ride experience is identical enough to Wonder Woman @ SFFT (they are clones after all), back is gonna be the most ridiculous WTF intense ride experience with absolutely bonkers airtime and laterals. The front is gonna be not as forceful but certainly a lot of fun with a great view, and the middle area is going to be the tamest. If intensity if your forte, go for the very back for sure.

I can't handle not riding Railblazer anymore so I'm thinking of making a quick trip up to NorCal to do SFDK and CGA in a couple weeks. Can anyone recommend a hotel that's midway between the two? I don't need fancy, I just need cheap!

Also, it's $133 for that all inclusive ticket (food, drinks, parking, Fastlane, Funpix which I probably won't use). Is it worth it? I feel like it's reasonable.

If you are driving from So Cal, I would just get a hotel by CGA since you will have to drive back that direction anyways.
