Movies, Movies, Movies.....

^Now that could be a hilarious evening--especially if you have a double bill of I, Frankenstein and Battlefield Earth.

Triple Feature with "Sharknado" !

That brings back memories of "UPNs Saturday Night Blockbuster Cinema" -- anyone else remember that?

TRULY awful films with production budgets of about $6. . . but we used to get together, get drunk, and yell back at the screen in a big party every Saturday night!

Has anybody seen the trailer for The Fault in Our Stars? I loved the book and was worried the movie wouldn't do it justice, however the trailer gives me faith in it.

I have to pitch in on I, Frankenstein. It is possible for a movie to be dependent on amazing GCI even if the plot is lackluster, such as Avatar, which I like. But the GCI looks horrible for a movie dependent on GCI (the fire effects were ridiculous, for example).

Just watched Prisoners. Incredible movie. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal gave amazing performances in what is now one of my favorite movies released in 2013. I was engaged for the entire 2.5 hours and found it to be emotional, gripping, and suspenseful. 10/10.

Spending the past few weeks of the off season catching up on movies.

Anchorman - I can't believe I didn't see this when it came out. Funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Hopefully the sequel comes out soon so I can watch it.

Amazing Spiderman - Can't wait for 2 to come out this summer. I liked it just as much as the first one.

This is the End - Probably my favorite comedy of 2013. After a short Walking Dead binge, this was a nice refresher.

Gravity - Now I know why this film won movie of the year. I loved it!

Thor 2 - superhero movies are always good! This was no exception. Wasn't as good as the other Marvel films I watched.

Pirates 3 - It was alright. Had some good action scenes. Not really much else that I cared for.

Frozen - LOVED this movie. Probably the best animated movie of last year. Even better than Monsters U and Despicable Me 2

Free Birds - Fun kids film. It had an interesting story. It's no Frozen though.

Lone Survivor - This was actually really tough to watch at times, but it had such a heartwarming ending. I really enjoyed this.

Catching Fire - I really really REALLY wanna read the books now.

I'll be spending the next few weeks binging on movies. Fun times!

Just saw Wolf of Wall Street.

Very very good movie. Insane at times.

De Caprio has never been better, and Jonah Hill

definitely deserved his supporting oscar nod,

as did Leonardo.

Great direction by Scorsese, brilliant screenplay.

We enjoyed it, with all the "over the top" of it all.

I just caught Escape from Tomorrow, which is playing at the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg. It's an interesting little black comedy, but I think it goes a bit "off the rails" in the second half. Call it a Disney fairy tale as seen by a lunatic.

It's also a bit distracting when some scenes happen at the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, but others at Disneyland in Anaheim--bit of a continuity problem if you're at all familiar with the two parks.

Saw "the Lego Movie" . . . . and liked it, a LOT.

I totally understand why the critics are raving about this film.

the animation is appropriately choppy (considering it's supposed to be Lego bricks), but what really makes this?

Perfect (and I mean PERFECT) voice casting.

It's hard to talk about the film without spoiling some of the wonderful surprises within, but I can say that it's not targeted at the under 5 set -- even tho our sold out screening had TONS of little kids in it.

I'd say this film is targeted at the late teen to young adult moviegoer (with some gags, targeted firmly at the parents).

Honestly, the little ones around us were a bit restless, and the one right in front of us fell asleep. But we were held rapt.

The only misfire, is really the pacing -- it starts out way too slow, but once the story really kicks in?. . . We were just swept away in it.

and yes, most Legos make an appearance (Space, Super-Heroes, Pirates, Western, Star Wars, LotR, Harry Potter -- the gag with a character confusing Dumbledore and Gandalf during a group planning session lands hysterically).

the only other criticism would be that the film kinda loses a bit of steam when it segues into real world (for a fun cameo that I wont' spoil here). . . but that's just a minor complaint.

Good stuff that I recommend.

Watched Cloudburst on Netflix this weekend and I would highly recommend it.

It's about two elderly lesbians that escape the horror of one partner being put in a nursing home by her greedy, manipulative granddaughter. In an attempt to escape the inevitable, they run away to Canada to get married. Along their journey, they pick up an ignorant young male hitchhiker that has a lot to learn about life from these two older ladies.

Olympia Dukakis is the uber-butch lesbian caring for her blind partner and despite the fact that her language is about as salty as it get's, I thought she was absolutely hilarious and played the part magnificently. Perhaps it is because I know someone that looks and acts very similar to her made it that much more appealing to me!

The ending seemed a bit rushed & a little over the top, but overall we enjoyed the movie very much.

Really really liked the LEGO movie. I did have my thoughts of not going because I thought it would be awkward being a 20+ couple with only kids, but was shocked seeing the 16+ couples in there and so little kids, (Then again I'm from the Netherlands so many kids go to the Dutch Dub). Anyway no regrets going to the movie it was like the song said, Awesome. Really funny especially Morgan Freeman's character.

It took a bit of self-convincing, but I did eventually work up an interest in seeing The Lego Movie, mostly for nostalgia purposes as I loved Legos as a kid. And after finally deciding to see it and foolishly driving to the movie theater in a snow storm, I have to say that I'm SO glad I got to watch it. What can I say? It's a creative story with perfect pacing, extremely fun characters, jokes that are thrown at you faster than you can handle; there were mostly children in the theater, and nobody laughed throughout the film more than my sister and I. Animal Logic did the animation, and everything they've ever made looks beautiful! And this is no exception. Overall, I don't think I've ever seen such a typical "ordinary guy turns out to be really special" plot used in such a creative and fun manor (since Kung Fu Panda). I actually kind of liked the strengthened message with the live action bits, but I can understand those who felt it strange. I highly recommend this movie! I thought Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was alright, I thought 21 Jump Street was alright, this is the first Lord and Miller movie I thought was really special. I don't care if you're older or younger than me; if Legos meant ANYTHING to you at any point in your life, go see this movie!

By the way.....
