Silver Dollar City (SDC) Discussion Thread

So this is a little late, but have you guys heard that the Rock aFire Bar in Kansas City is relocating to Branson for the Spring/Summer? It's an arcade bar featuring the original Rock aFire Explosion from Showbiz Pizza Place.

Here's what the show looks like

. I thought some of you guys would like to know and visit this place if you plan on going to SDC this summer

I follow them on Facebook and I have a feeling it will be permanent.

They didn’t allow kids until the last week it was open in KC. It was strictly an adult arcade, Draftcade, up and down, all adult arcade bars. They were asked if they were coming back to KC and they wouldn’t comment. I think it’s a done deal.

I think It will do well in Branson, nostalgia.

^^I think it depends on how much better they do here than KC, but I agree. Also they do allow kids in the bar every first tuesday of the month for Family Night. I personally attended those a couple of times and let me say, it was awesome!

Happy Spring Break! It's a cold, windy, rainy day in the Ozarks, but it it's still a great day for Silver Dollar City.

With rain in the forecast, there weren't so much "crowds" as there were "a few dozen crazy people." We walked onto everything.

But first we walked into Hannah's Ice Cream Parlour.

Now what kinda person just waltzes into an ice cream shop at quarter to 10 in the morning like they think they're a VIP?

Someone who's bought a VIP refill cup!

We were the first ones to redeem ours for the season! Naturally that meant the system wasn't quite working either. Not too much trouble, and we get free refills all year now! I noticed the refills went up to $2 this year, so that's helpful.

Time Traveler and Thunderation were as good as ever, and then we took the long way round to Outlaw Run for a photo op. All these are taken from a public pathway through knotholes in the construction wall.

New location for Magic Box near Powder Keg. Love that mosswork.

After the rest of the coasters, some time in Half Dollar Holler, and the Flooded Mine, it was time for lunch.

Ahhh...skillet.

The skillets come on plates this year. Much easier than the old bowls were, less spills over.

And where did we go for dessert?

The cinnamon bread told us "Apres moi, la deluge" so we headed out. Great start to the season and I'm glad it wasn't a washout.

^^^ Thanks!

^^ I don't know for sure. I've never seen them exclude anything from the after 3 (or after 5) promotions, but you'd probably be best off calling them.

^ Yeah, it's an enormous area. Obviously there's a new rapids ride, but beyond that it's anyone's guess. I plan to be peeking through the glory holes all year!

I may be repeating some information mentioned by others, but I'll try to add my own perspective to some of it. I visited SDC from Wednesday through Friday and there was a lot to take in regarding changes for this season. Some changes were minor, but some, especially near the project 2020 construction area, were quite drastic. Here's some things i noticed

Flooded Mine received a lot of work over the off season. The lighting was updated and made the overall appearance of many of the scenes a lot more colorful. A lot of the major props were fixed and running including the saw blade which was spinning on all 3 days and actually moved forwards and backwards on Wednesday and Friday. Most of the audio was working including the ride's soundtrack. The only audio i noticed that wasn't working was in the final scene where the prisoners try and escape. It also appeared that many of the boats received a fresh coat of paint as well. Overall, Flooded Mine is in the best condition it has been for as long as i could remember. I really love how they're finally giving it some love!

As expected, the riverside section of the park is hardly recognizable. With the land clearing and the lack of leaves in the trees, it makes that area feel extremely bare and open. It's weird being able to see Outlaw Run's brake run from the Dockside Theater. They also remodeled and widened the path around that theater. Unfortunately, the stream that ran along the path as well as some of the aqua ducts were removed. Though, they did their best to make the remodeled path look like it's been there for a while as they used the same style of rock/brick fencing (don't know what to actually call it) found around the park. They also had some nice theming props in place, so it didn't look too bare. Further down towards Fireman's landing, they added a new waterfall / stream that feeds into a new Gold Panning area. They did a really good job making it fit in because i didn't know that waterfall was new until a friend of mine told me it was. It looked REALLY good.

On a smaller note, the park added an additional seat belt to Firefall. So now you have the OTSR, the seat belt that connects to the OTSR, and the new seat belt that goes around the waist. It seemed to really increase the dispatch times. It also seemed that Firefall was running a significantly tamer ride cycle. But who knows, it could've just been due to the weather.

Outlaw Run was down to one train as the other is still out for maintenance. Though the train that was running received new foam on both the seats and the restraints. It looked really nice!

According to a ride op at Time Traveler, the trains received new restraint cylinders which release and lower the restraints faster and more reliably. It also appeared that it made the ride marginally more large rider friendly as i didn't see a single walk of shame the whole time i was there. It also seemed to make the loading process much faster, as the crew didn't stack a single train. In fact, there was one ride where we dispatched before the other train hit the second launch. Hopefully they can get 3 trains to operate smoothly as that would make the throughput much higher than it is. Though, it wouldn't matter how fast they dispatch if they can't get people through the photo spot in the queue quickly. On thursday and friday, the line was backed out the entrance behind the photo spot. Since it was taking so long to get through the photos, they were dispatching half empty trains since there wouldn't be enough people past the photo spot to fill a train. I'll be honest, i kinda hope they do away with the photo spot or move it outside the queue somehow.

Fire In The Hole, while it smelled of fresh paint, i couldn't find any areas that looked like they were touched up. Many of the effects were broken and there was a lot of missing audio. It's kinda dissapointing that the ride is in such bad shape even though it's still extremely popular.

I also purchased the free refill tumbler and its really handy! You just show the employee your cup, fill it up, then you're on your way. It's a lot quicker than someparks that still require you to scan the cup. My only complaint is that there aren't any handles. It would've been nice if it came with a straw, though the entire park is now straw-less.

Overall, it was a nice few days at the City! Despite the weather being poor all 3 days, it was still a fun time!

^ Read this, forgot to comment. Sorry.

I agree with you on Flooded Mine and Fire in the Hole. I noticed the same things and meant to put it in my report, but didn't for some reason. Glad you mentioned it.

Everything was running really well. I was especially impressed woth Flooded Mine. A lot of the time I don't bother with the gun because it just doesn't work, but they fixed those, and they worked well, and it was really fun.

Glad to hear the classics are getting some love and being fixed up a bit. Hope it stays that way. Been hearing a lot of rumors that this is the last season for FITH. I really hope not.

That doesn't make sense. It's across the tracks from the Lost River construction site, and that bridge means they pretty much have to keep those tracks there. I don't see the new ride impacting it at all. SDC also takes a year off after a big project, so even assuming it was the next target, FITH would open next year for sure and maybe also '21 depending on the scope of the project.

It wouldn't surprise me if it does get removed since they've just let things slowly break and fall apart on it the past few years (well at least more so than usual for SDC). So many of the effects, big and small, were broken the few days we were there. Lots of the audio has disappeared as well. Its absolutely riddled with "awkward silence" so to say. So many tunnels and even some larger scenes are absolutely silent, most notably the burning bridge scene. I remember it used to have that "fire in the mountain, fire in the hole" soundtrack playing through a lot of those scenes. But it slowly disappeared over time. I think the last time i heard it playing was in either 2015 or 2016. But back on the topic of its removal. Personally, FITH is one of my favorite rides in the park for nostalgia reasons. But honestly, i'd rather them remove and replace it with a new dark ride than keep it sitting in its current pitiful state. I mean, they could rebirth it as a new water coaster dark ride in a similar fashion to the new Lost River project, but i don't imagine corporate would see much of a ROI with that. But we can all hope they just put in the necessary work to liven it up and keep it operating.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey folks, heading to SDC for the first time next Friday! Aside from bringing in a Coke bottle, anyone know of good discounts for tickets? Sadly can't go the day before and get the Price Cutter Thursday. Also, is there any difference between online and at-gate ticket prices?

Link to post

They really don't have a lot of coupon codes. Fortunately, every ticket gets you in the previous day at 3pm (or 5pm on a day that closes at 9 or later). Yes, there's a couple dollars difference for purchasing online, but if you're getting a Coke discount, that's probably more than the online discount anyway.

Do the cave tour.

Eat cinnamon bread.

Thought I would post this construction update on the former Lost River area courtesy of MIG. Looks like the lake is back but its gonna be in a much smaller form. https://www.midwestinfoguide.com/2019/03/riverfront-lost-river-sdc_63.html

Hey everyone, I’m just wondering how the fast pass system works at SDC like for example does the fast lane line merge or take you right to the station, and do you get to pick your row, etc..

Thanks!

No merging; they all go straight to the station. Outlaw Run and Time Traveler have their own Trailblazer queues, Wildfire has a side door from the observation deck, everything else goes through the exit. You can pick any row you like; they board Trailblazer people before anyone else.

Opening day of the brand-new Festival of Wonder!

For the last 20 years or so, the opening of World-Fest really marks the beginning of the season for Silver Dollar City. Yes, the park opens about three weeks earlier, but with no shows and only minimal craftsfolks, it's a bit empty. World-Fest always brings the park to life....only it is no more.

In its place, like a Phoenix from the Fire (oooh, foreshadowing) rises Festival of Wonder. In many ways this really is still World-Fest. It has a lot of the same vibes, with the emphasis on shows and food. In recent years, though, World Fest was having difficulty coming up with enough performers to fill all the venues. The change of theme has revitalized this shoulder season festival in a major way, and it made for an incredible day.

First up was the X-Pogo show on the square. It features skateboard-type stunts on both spring and pneumatic pogos in a high-energy atmosphere. If you're a child of the 90s like me, you'll recognize many of the trick names. Tony Hawk did every one of those at some point.

X-Pogo

Once the food venues opened up at 11, it was time to head to...

What wonders await?

There are so many Foods of Wonder. I'm going to have to go once a week or so through this festival just to try them all. They do have a buffet from 3-6 on Saturdays with all of the festival foods for about $24. Not a bad deal if you want to have everything.

My first choice today was a twist on the specialty of my hometown of Springfield, Missouri: Cashew Chicken Waffle Cone!

Still can't manage to get the orientation right on these closeups.

When going to a theme park, you really should go first to the attraction you are most excited about. I wanted to make sure I saw Phoenix Fire, and they only have three shows daily, so I went there first to make sure I saw it.

These dancers are incredible. They use LED and real fire effects in choreography and individual performances. I can't stress enough that every one of you needs to see one of their shows. Hopefully at SDC during Festival of Wonder, but if not, they tour a lot: https://www.phoenixfiredancers.com

Though not officially part of the Festival of Wonder, it was also opening day for the new saloon show, Sagebrush Sadie's Wild West Adventure. These saloon shows don't change an awful lot from year to year, but there is some new banter and some new dad jokes to groan at. I liked the Night Court parody especially.

Juggler Albert Lucas is back again with all his hits, and he is also out to set a new record for most objects ever juggled at SDC. He did it, juggling 10 rings at once!

IMG_20190410_133310.thumb.jpg.b297854a0c2895a8e9f345140d1d527e.jpg

Next up was CirqUnique. I am always up for one of these theme park knockoffs of Cirque du Soliel. This one had a really cool balancing act that I hadn't seen before, as well as an acrobat duo, a juggler, a clown, and one of the same Wheel of Danger acrobats that I saw at Kings Island last year. Good show!

After the show, I went back to the Frisco Barn for another Food of Wonder: crab fries! These are waffle fries with Old Bay, just like Chickie's and Pete's, but topped with actual crab meat! So good. Best crab fries ever.

I Harp Extreme is maybe a bit overhyped. I mean, maybe it's extreme for harp music. Really though, it was a beautiful relaxing show that was just perfect after the adrenaline-pumping shows earlier in the day. The sextet were all wonderful musicians and played a wide variety of music. I was like half the age of the next youngest person in the audience, but whatever. Those harpists kicked ass.

IMG_20190410_154816.thumb.jpg.f735953f85df84e0c9efb54f2c76d2df.jpg

Last show was PaintJam with Dan Dunn. I'm so glad to see him return. Last year he had a substitute because he was undergoing chemotherapy. But he is an awesome dude and has beaten the cancer and is back at jammin' some paint like the badass artist he is. It was a great show as always. Dan Dunn is a genuinely good dude.

So that brings us to the end of Day 1. Festival of Wonder is a hit with me! If you can make it down here sometime in the next three weeks, do it! It's a great time.

Final count:

Shows - 6

Rides - 0

Foods of Wonder - 2

Beers - 0

^ Wow, that's so cool you'll get to go back again and again, with all those food choices to have.

And all the shows look wonderful! I think the one called Phoenix Fire would be The One for me

not to miss. I love those kind of shows. Thanks for the Opening Day TR, Andrew!
