Silver Dollar City (SDC) Discussion Thread

p. 275: New resort announced as part of a $500 million development plan!

I'm curious if anyone has any insight as to why Dollywood's cinnamon bread gets so much more attention. Is it purely a marketing thing, or are there differences between the two?

It's a marketing thing. . . Dolly has a pair of phDD's in marketing! Those make everything better!!

Cinnamon bread has been at SDC for as long as I can remember. It is probably original to SDC, as most things shared between the parks are. There is a difference between SDC and DW's recipies though. DW's has more loose brown sugar on top whereas SDC uses more cinnamon and white sugar.

As always, DW gets the publicity because it is simply in a better location to be accessible by most enthusiasts/reviewers/etc. That's also why they got the resort first.

Same thing happens every year with the Christmas festivals too. People rant on and on about how good DW's is, and they always get the award, but SDC's is arguably better and just never gets a chance to be compared properly. Most people are surprised to find that SDC even has one.

Location, Location, Location. At least Branson has an airport now...

How is the park typically on or around opening weekend in March? My wife and I are looking to drive down from STL around that time with our 6 and 4 year old and I was just curious on how certain rides operated when/if the temperatures are low? It could be 80 or 20 in late March thanks to MO weather. I just want to make sure Outlaw Run is still able to run if the temps are chilly as I'm dying to get on that! Thanks.

Very busy. It's Spring Break for almost all area schools and colleges, plus SDC's opening is kind of the unofficial start of the Branson tourist season in general. Prepare for it to be packed, and budget for Trailblazer Pass. Don't buy until you get there, though, as ride wait times can be minimal even on days when SDC is busy. You really never know until you get there how it's going to be, since it's just such an unusual theme park.

If your dates are flexible, I'd encourage you to wait until the weekend of April 8-9. You'll get to see the new Festival of Wonder, and ride lines have always been very short for WorldFest, which this replaces, due to the focus on shows and other entertainment.

It's very nice that SDC has this listed

I'm still impressed that they will give you a voucher to return anytime during the season if there is bad weather for more than 90 minutes of bad weather. Most parks i've been to have done the "sorry that the weather's bad, sucks for you" kind of thing. It just shows how much SDC wants their guests to be happy!

Their weather policy is ridiculously awesome. There was one day it was drizzling most of the day, so Powder Keg was down, and as we were leaving, right at the entrance to Ozark Marketplace, an employee stopped us and asked if we had gotten to do everything we wanted. We said, just to be honest, not really, Powder Keg was down, but it was okay. He said, are you sure, you could stop by guest services. I declined, since we had season passes, and he just said thanks and let us go.

I share this to show that their level of service isn't just in the event someone complains. They don't wait for that; they're proactive in encouraging people to get those return tickets on bad weather days. I've never seen any other company--not just any other theme park but any other business in general--do what SDC does for customer satisfaction.

  • 2 weeks later...
Hey guys! My family is thinking of going to SDC around the 1st or 2nd week that it's open.

How crowded should I expect the park to be?

Should I do Outlaw Run first or Wildfire first?

Thanks

All though I don't visit much around then, I'd expect a crowd. Would you be visiting on a weekend? If so, then there could be some decent wait times. If you ask me, I'd do powder keg first since it always gets a hefty line even on slow days. Then go to Outlaw Run, Wildfire, Fire in The Hole, and Thunderation.

Saw some construction pictures on another site, what I believe is the station building for project 2018 is taking shape and it's HUGE. With the park opening in less than a month, watching the construction of this new attraction should get pretty interesting.

Yeah, the station is like 5 stories tall and they haven't even got to the roof line yet. Looks like everything is consolidated into a small footprint due to the topography. There's speculation that the maintenance area will be directly under the station. I don't know how they're going to fit a queue in there, but maybe they'll build a separate two story building closer to the path just to wind the queue through.
