Ed Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Wow... I hope they don't employ any Tatsu ops to check the restraints.
Zen Coaster Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Let's face it, it will be crap without Gary Sinise anyway.
thomas2 Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Okay so te cars are all stacked up at the top of the tower. But how are they released? If it's a press-a-button system then where will the buttom be? The only logical explanatian would have to be in the car.  Strange, very strange  Cool...  But strange!
BDG Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I don't think it's a mission impossible to get a few rides on this thing, once it's built.
IwantRevenge Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Okay so te cars are all stacked up at the top of the tower. But how are they released? If it's a press-a-button system then where will the buttom be? The only logical explanatian would have to be in the car. Strange, very strange  Cool...  But strange!  Well there will be one person who sacrafices himself and presses the button. he wil lthen either grab onto the back of the last car and ride it togo style or jump off.
thrillrideseeker Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 My only question is..how do the cars get back to the top? ~Matthew
SharkTums Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I'm guessing that's not the most important thing in their minds since if they use it that means there was some catastrophic accident. Â For testing I'm sure they just winch it back with a cable.
FlyingScooter Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 My only question is..how do the cars get back to the top?~Matthew   They'd probably use a few spare rockets and just blast it back up there. A winch is a good idea, though, but they'd dismiss it as far too easy to do.
BeemerBoy Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 My only question is..how do the cars get back to the top? That'll be Lisa Nowak's new job.
FlyingScooter Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 ^LMAO! Â Â So that's what the New steel mallet and rubber hose were for?
Imhotep Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 Well since they said her job was safe, Im sure Bill Oefelein will be first in line to test it. Â Nothing like a batshiat crazy astronaut to resurrect a thread!
jedimaster1227 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 I wish they would open something like this to the public. They could probably prepare the astronauts for weightlessness just by letting them ride on that first drop...
ahecht Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Well, none of us will probably ever get to ride it, but NASA has proposed building a 350 foot tall rollercoaster as the launch tower escape system for Ares, the replacement for the space shuttle. It has a vertical 350 foot drop and a max speed of 100mph before it hits the breaks, and a total ride time of 88 seconds. Too bad it looks like they're using Vekoma/Arrow style track -- Intamin box track would look much cooler. Â Kinda redefines "rocket coaster", eh? Wes Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 ^ We already had a topic going for this, so I merged your post with the older topic because those are some good pics.
ECZenith Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Wow, for once I gotta say I hope I never have to see this thing running because a horrible catastrophe would most likely follow...
DATman Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I'd love to see them contract Vekoma for this.
bgwfreak Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 If the tax payers are going to have to foot the bill for this thing, they should let us at least ride it when they aren't lauching any rockets.
chmilo24 Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 I read somewhere that they might build a waterslide one in case of fires.
RollerC Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Whats with the pod over the car? Also, wouldnt it take longer to get in, and pull down the restraints than to clip youself to a wire and skim down? I mean what if one of the astronauts decides to pull it so that he gets some floater down the drop and flys out?
Loco Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 So say something blows up. This means some of the coaster track will be destroyed...no?
FlyingScooter Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 I read somewhere that they might build a waterslide one in case of fires. Â I would doubt that they would do that. The risk of a flash-boil would be too great. Â The way the astronauts are strapped in, i don't they could get out fast enough to reach the escape coaster.
FLIPDUDE Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 ^^Yeah, but the whole point is that the explosion will happen AFTER the astronauts are well on their way out. otherwise there's little point for an escape veichle anyway, no? Â ^I think he was joking.
TheRapidsNerd Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I just posted an RCT3 mock-up of this system on my YouTube channel. Interesting idea, but other than the drop, admittedly a bland ride. But then, the idea is saving lives, not entertainment. Yeah, I was curious too about this thing. Â http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEvoWhDUObQ
downunder Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I believe Elissa has returned to Florida and entered the Astronaut program, she's not going to let a credit go without a fight. Myself, I'm going disguise myself as one of those plastic dummies they use when they test these things. Â I'm surprised they don't have a bit of a launch to get it going down even faster. I guess we will see it in action because they will have to test it now and then, especially before launches.
Gmaster562 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Lets just hope they don't take any crews from SFMM to operate this ride.
