The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

^If they really were planning a Kingda Ka-style coaster to break height and speed records, they'd probably need all that space anyway, right?

I'll be anxiously awaiting the news too. Although it's kind of a long drive for me, it sounds like whatever they're planning is big enough news to warrant a trip (or a few).

The 27th makes sense as an announcement date, that conveniently allows the media to talk about it when they are at the park 2 days later for Lex Luthor's opening. They may have intended to do July 4th but with LL opening right before, they could have moved it up. Kill's 2 birds with one stone, it also gets around the news not wanting to cover a second SFMM story only a week after they did all the LL coverage.

I really hope it's not something like Kingda Ka, it would be cooler to see something unique. Maybe something that makes me want to visit them. Also, if it is that big, the launch could go through the tunnel and then OVER the mountain; I mean if it's as fast as people seem to think, it could easily coast over that hill.

This was posted in the Hershey thread regarding SDLs new trains...

After riding sooper dooper Looper on Tuesday, I will have to say that the new trains are sooper comfortable. If SFMM got these it would be amazing.

MM, you NEED to do this for Revolution....NOW!

SFDK got a new train on V2 this last off season. They didn't market it at all. It's not unheard of to get new trains and not market it. Understandably it's different to buy 3 trains from a completely different manufacturer than built the ride. I could see that being an investment on a year between major installs. Just wishful thinking here.

^ Is making the announcement before LL's opening wise?

I just get the feeling that if they do that and the new ride is going to be huge, then LL's opening might be reduced to a footnote in the media's coverage.

I think Lex Luthor being a 400' drop ride that's taller than any other in the world, it wouldn't get overshadowed by some concept art of a future ride. Look at Disney announcing all the DCA changes. The excitement and news of Cars Land didn't take away interest of Mermaid or World of Color.

^ Not just that, but SFMM's ability to spend money is so squeezed that nearly all capital expenditures need to be planned out years in advance. Whatever you see today, if it's not already in the plans, it's 2-3 years away at best.

I agree with you. It's not like SFMM can just say, "wow those new trains at Hershey really turned out well, let's go shopping". A proposal would have to be put together that explains to cooperate how this would make the company revenue, why said trains are needed, and then they would still have to wait in line until it's their turn again for such an investment. I work for a company where we have to go through similar channels to get anything done.

If there is a plan out there to restore Revolution, who knows what the time table is. I would bet though that Colossus is the bigger priority simply because the possibility of what can be done with that ride sounds far more marketable on paper.

Are Revolution's current trains the original ones (with added OTSR's)?

Yes except originally the wheel bogeys were the two point design. The current three point design was added not long after it opened for safety.

^ The ride originally operated with lap bars only, so yes the OTSRs can be removed without causing any trouble. Granted having lap bars and OTSRs at the same time seems really redundant. The park should get rid of one of them IMO.

Could Revolution get rid of the OTSRs all together because at WCB they said that the OTSRs are needed because they hold you in properly.

If you are going to do that you might as well get new trains. Oh wait, that makes too much sense.

Wasn't there some california law mentioned way back in this topic that any ride that has inversions has to have OTSR's if it gets new trains or is modified? Or was that fake or just not apply to Six Flags and other bigger parks?

This has been covered so many times I forget exactly but I believe it's a MM thing, mainly to keep insurance costs down.

There is no law.

They were added because SF wanted to add them for their own reason. And according to WCB last year, they can now not be removed. They'd either have to buy new trains, or have a different OTSR.

Ahhh, okay thanks. I'm just a step or a few ahead of GP at best it seems.

I love the original trains but it would benefit the ride so much more if they just replaced with new trains and did the magnetic brake upgrade like SDL. Maybe then the trims would go away.
