The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

As great as that would be. Ya, no. They'll probably build yet another gimmicky coaster on top of a parking lot and let everything continue to rot. All the history and culture will just go to dust. As sad as it is that is, it seems to be the Six Flags business plan for most of their parks.

^Please put the razor blade down now, son...life and SFMM are really not that bad now are they?

I can be a cynical SOB when I want to be, but I just don't think that the park is really that bad. I have been there twice in the past eight years and had a pretty fun time both times. I just accept the park for a coaster thrill park and like it for just that. I'm sad to hear that it has gotten trashy with the landscaping and overall cleanliness because I don't remember it being bad when I was there a few years ago. That can easily be rectified with management's proper attention.

Coaster rankings:

Riddlers - Best stand-up coaster I have ridden to date.

X2 & Superman being cool for just being something like I have never been on before.

Tatsu - 2nd best flying coaster I have ridden to date (Manta).

Vortex & Ninja- may be two of the last Arrow's standing before all is said and done. Nothing particularly awesome, but pure nostalgia at this point.

Batman - clone, but always fun & intense

Yolo - looking more awesome than I originally thought it would. Having second thoughts on this one and will be interested to hear the reviews when it opens.

Goliath - honestly, one of my top five steel coasters. When we were able to marathon it for WCB, I rode it six times in a row and loved it every time!

Scream! - We rode it without a wait four times in a row. Horribly on the parking lot, but still not an awful coaster. I wouldn't mind seeing Darien Lake get this coaster over Led Zeppelin - The Ride.

Haven't been there since Green Lantern and Apocopolypse were installed, but they look like decent coaster additions.

Food at the non-TPR visit was horrid and so was the service, but we only did that once and all other times we left the park for meals or had a good TPR lunch.

So there is my ten minute written review of SFMM...time to go eat dinner!

I've said it before and it still stands, but I generally describe SFMM as this: If you are looking for an excellent collection of coasters and don't care about anything but coasters, you'll love the park. If you care about literally anything else, the park is terrible. Some places in the park are just depressing when you're walking through them because the park does have a ton of potential, but it doesn't utilize much of it. Honestly, if SFMM had been kept up well and offered a variety of rides instead of nothing but coasters, it would be my second favorite park in California, but in its current state the park is only worth visiting about twice a year even though I'm less than two hours away. I would say that I have more enjoyable visits to SFMM then unenjoyable visits, but I still have proportionately more unenjoyable visits to SFMM than I do to the Disneyland Resort and Knott's Berry Farm combined.

^ I like the new colors of Batman personally.

I think repainting Scream and Tatsu would need to take priority over all of those. I'd also love it if they got new trains on Revolution and Gold Rusher (allowing GR to go back to a 42" height requirement).

I would honestly LOVE to see the park shut down from Fright Fest to Spring Break and do a complete repainting/rehabbing of all of the buildings on site. I'd be more than willing to sacrifice a few months of the park being open and not getting a new coaster if that was going to happen. Unfortunately that's a minority position and it's not going to bring any people into the park the way a new coaster will.

That would be great if they closed the mountain down after Labor day and have a Easter reopening. If the public were to see the love going into this park they would be happy. Then comes opening day, i know they would come and check it out. Park mgmt really needs to voice this to corp office. I want to see this park restored to it's once glory.

The vast majority of the public only cares about Six Flags for the rides. They'd rather have SFMM add a new thrill ride every year than close down to fix the place up. Do we like it? No way. There's so many things wrong with the infrastructure and service it's not even worth listing here anymore. But it doesn't matter---thrill rides and cheap annual passes sell.

Yes they do sell and honestly I wish they would make them more expensive just like Disneyland and Knotts. Maybe it will bring down some of the riff raft kids getting them. Or better yet have an age restriction like Disney just added, that would solve a lot headaches! I swear I was ready to bitch slap some kids last Wednesday while I was in line for X2.

I actually don't mind the cheap Season Passes.

I don’t mind a cheap pass either but from a business side. I believe they can profit a little more if they were to raise the price of the season pass. People will continue to pay for a pass no matter what becuase they love SFMM!

Honest opinion please. I come on here a lot and read a lot of negative comments on this park. I hear the coasters are great but everything else sucks. I plan on making a trip to California soon. I do have a Six Flags season pass so I would get in free. But I'm not gonna buy a plane ticket, hotel, and rental car and waste tons of money if this park is really as bad as I read. What should I do? Help needed!

If your flying in to CA, DONT just go to SFMM (and I would say that even if SFMM was the best park in the chain), Go to disney or knotts if you can, along with SFMM. As to your SFMM question. If you like coaster/thrill rides then yes, you will like it.

I went in 2010 and I enjoyed the park don't remember it being too bad appearance wise not the best, but it is Six Flags. I liked the coaster variety, my only complaint was the horrible operations on Tatsu (took at least 45 mins with gold flash pass) and that I just missed out on Superman. I don't remember it being that dirty, but we also did Disneyland and Universal as well as plenty of sightseeing on the trip. I also had a gold flash pass so I didn't wait in many lines but if you are going to ride the coasters you'll have a good time. Just like previously mentioned though don't go to California just for SFMM but do other parks and sights as well.

I say you should come and visit this park. It’s a nice park don’t get me wrong; it’s just some of the attractions need a little TLC. Like every Six Flags I have visited, all of them have some flaws. Also they have the kids that are little smart asses and think they are invincible, running around, cursing and acting the fool. Families go and see these clowns and think bad right away.

You need to be your own judge! So I’m telling you to book your flight, room and rental car and we will see you here! Maybe let some of us know when you are coming and we can meet you and give you the tour de mountain!

Thanks for all the info. I do wanna visit MM because of my love of coasters. That's probably the only reason I would visit. I do like a good mix of rides and shows and I know MM is not know for that, however I can deal with it. It sounds like making a trip to Cali just for MM is not worth it so I will try to visit other parks. I've been to Disney World and I hear its much better the Disney Land, but I may still give it a try. I would love to go to Universal though!

Personally, I would look at the park map. The coasters at least have some variety to them. I would list R. Rapids and Lex Drop of Doom as two very solid attractions for adults. I imagine you would not book a trip for this park's (or any park's spinner) flat ride selection, and the ones at MM are mostly for the kids. Yes, the negatives are there but I would not say the park "sucks". It is not a hideous looking place by any stretch of the imagination. There are definately signs of older buildings that can be spruced up, and the bathrooms still need attention. In my life, I have never based travel decisions on the quality of the toilets.

The food is ok, and mostly typical mall food court level. The ride op experience can and does fluctuate wildy between attractions. There is no real "entertainment" aspect that I would recommend, like theatrical, parade or concert presentations. For adults, it pretty much is a coaster park with 3 water rides and a drop tower. With the amount of coasters though, easy to occupy a full day there.

I would pair it with Universal Studios, as it is the nearest park to SFMM, and they currently have one of the best dark rides with Transformers, on the west coast. It is a heavy show park, so a good compliment to SFMM's coaster only focus.

I do suggest hitting other parks in the area. Knotts is the next closest park with a lot of coasters. As for Disney, Disney World and Disneyland really are not comparable. They each offer their own awesome and dumb things. If you like Disney, then go but if coasters are the priority, then do Knotts. But I wouldn't base your decision to go to Disney on others opinions of the parks. They are simply too different to compare as a whole.

Full Throttle is looking great! I kinda want to hear what the random park guests say when they pass it. Because of its un-traditional design, I can only imagine the things people will say about the ride!!

With the top hat element, I'm already anticipating people comparing it to Xcelerator! On a more sarcastic note, I'll bet some guests will be more like "YOLOcoaster looks too intense for me!" Couldn't resist throwing in a RCT reference.
