chickenbowl Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 Bayside Sky Ride is a bucket list ride for me. And to top it off it's recently been brought to my attention that you can bring beer on it. Can you imagine riding that ride when that picture was taken sipping an ice cold beer? I could die happy. I'm lucky to live within 1 mile of the Bayside Skyride, the view of Mission Bay is great from up there - I also love being able to walk around that park with a beer! If you're in San Diego and also love Skyrides, I recommend in Skyfari at the SD Zoo. It's my favorite out of the 9 Von Roll type 101's I've ridden and certainly feels the tallest! You cross a large canyon and get great views inside animal enclosures (namely hippos, gorillas, and chimps).
CaptainCrush Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 Bayside Sky Ride does look amazing. I recommend riding SFGAdv's Sky Ride! Phenomenal and I believe it is a World's Fair original
KBrylczyk Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 All this sky ride love and nobody has mentioned Knoebels yet? For shame!
coasterbill Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 All this sky ride love and nobody has mentioned Knoebels yet? For shame! It's fun but it's not a Von Roll and I find those to be much cooler. The fixed grips at Lake Compounce and Knoebels are both great rides though.
blk_mamba Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 All this sky ride love and nobody has mentioned Knoebels yet? For shame! Their skyride is pretty epic and scary as hell.

Yep, definitely a chairlift as opposed to the miniature Gondola style of Von Roll. But if we are mentioning Gondola's now, I have to mention my favorite - The Whistler, BC "Peak 2 Peak Gondola." It's built by Doppelmayr as compared to other swiss transportation companies like Intamin or Von Roll. This thing has two Guinness World Records (World’s longest unsupported span, 1.88 miles and World’s highest lift of its kind at 1427ft above the valley floor) and is pretty nuts! It even has a glass floor in two of the cabins...
coasterbill Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 ^ Holy crap! I need this in my life. Does it serve a purpose beyond sightseeing? I see that it appears to be a ski resort, are there trails on each side? In any case, this thing is awesome.

I see that it appears to be a ski resort, are there trails on each side? In any case, this thing is awesome. When I visited in June, 2015, I found a TON of trails around the peaks of both mountains. They also have mountain biking if that's your thing. The one day I paid to use the gondolas certainly weren't enough for me to fully explore. The whole town of Whistler is home to a ton of outdoor activities and a great village area with tons of bars! I hope I'm not getting off topic, but I am pretty much in love with the whole Pacific Northwest and everybody should know about it! I'm happy to visit my company's headquarters anytime (WhiteWater West is based in Richmond, BC). Also, the Coaster at Playland in Vancouver is absolutely worth your time. It's my #5 woodie and basically Canadian Phoenix!
SFOG1991 Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 ^Thank you for bringing this to my attention! The ride looks amazing and I love skiing and mountain biking. This entire place sounds like it definitely needs to be on my list of places to visit.
ALT2870 Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 Whistler Blackcomb is considering the largest ski area in the world and that gondola connects the two namesake mountains. Back to the regularly scheduled programing.
coasterbill Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 I hope I'm not getting off topic Well when it was on topic it was just conversations about the park being out of room mixed in with complaining about track colors and arguing over whether or not the ride would open in 2016. Being off topic is the best thing that could possibly happen to this thread. So on that note... Back to the regularly scheduled programing. Please god, no.
simaticable Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 Honestly, all this talk about sky rides is pretty refreshing compared to what was discussed a couple of weeks ago. I will admit that I forgot to ride the skyride at Cedar Point when I went in 2014, and I'm ashamed of that as I'm a fan of them.
JT325 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 Skyrides are becoming a bigger part of my amusement park/coaster hobby. As are classic rides (especially coasters with no seat dividers, and all that extra junk), and log flumes.

Actually I'm planning a "trip" report on a typical day for a lift operator. Won't be till later this month though as we are closed till next weekend.

As are classic rides (especially coasters with no seat dividers, and all that extra junk), and log flumes. Welcome to the dark side. Haha. Thank you. I remember the days when I wouldn't be bothered with such "lame rides." Now I seek them out. How cool would it be if Cedar Point decided to bring back the Frontier lift? They could if they wanted... and it would be popular. They could use a real flume, too. And a classic woodie... They really botched up Blue Streak years ago. They have the means for anything they want, it would be nice if they had "one of everything."
KPfan Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 All this sky ride love and nobody has mentioned Knoebels yet? For shame! Their skyride is pretty epic and scary as hell. Unfortunately I was unable to get on the Knoebels sky ride when we visited in September. I did get to go on the one at Lake Compounce and that one was definitely scary. Really enjoyed the view though.
storms555 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 I notice a lot of talk of sky rides lately. lol. It made me think what if they combined a coaster and a skyride. O.O I dont mean those ziplines with the little seats either but as full fledged thrill version of an enclosed sky ride/cable car. It would be an entirely new ride. Im so not an expert in physics so i doubt something like that would work but its cool to think about. Sky ride where the cables have steep inclined drops and even cork screws!

Not sure they would use cables, but I see where you're going with this... Kind of a T-Rex track but with the wheels on the inside maybe.
DoinItForTheFame Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Sounds like a maintenance nightmare.

Nrthwnd Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 ^ One of you guys (hello, Bill?) should start a Sky Rides Thread. I would enjoy reading it, and contributing to it, where I could. Yomuiriland. TPR 2007 Japan Tour. This is how you got to the park, after going thru the entry gate. At the bottom of the hill. (o;
