Smoking: Park policies: Your opinion.

Recommended Posts

My opinion on Smoking in Parks is this, Smoking Areas are a totally stupid idea, would you rather walk past 1 person smoking and smell it, or walk past 30 people smoking and smell that!??!

The question should be more like, "Would you rather walk past a group of people smoking, or walk (or stand, or sit) near 1 person smoking for an extended period of time?" I think the idea behind smoking areas is that they let people get away from the smoke, which they can't do when the smokers are in lines and such.

Anyway, best of luck kicking the habit!

When I was at Kings Island opening day, someone younger than me lit up in Son of Beasts que. Too bad he wasn't anywhere near the structure, he could have done us all a favor. It actually broke down while in line and I seen a security person and told them that someone was smoking in line.

BTW, as a non smoker, I am in favor of completely banning it in parks, but also see people who smoke, so I am in favor of smoking areas off the main walk way. I usually try to avoid smoky areas just because it bugs me.

Even as a smoker I hate people doing it in queuelines purely the fact that it's just rude to everyone around you.

I would never wish for it to be banned in themeparks though, that just screams overkill. If parks wish to put in smoking areas then fine, but put enough of them in! And make them large enough with actual smoking bins there.

It makes me laugh at a train station in London where they now have a "smokers fenced off bit" outside the main station, and there isn't anywhere to put your cigarette ends.

I am a smoker working on being an ex-smoker. Remember folks, the USA is not going to make it totally illegal when they export tons of tobacco and tax it heavily on their own citizens.

I always respect non-smokers, in parks or elsewhere where it's restricted. They have a right to breathe easy. I do NOT like preachy people who harass me about it in designated smoking areas. If you're a non-smoker, don't go to those areas, simple enough?

I must say I am often effected badly by cigarette smoke, at my home park Kings Dominion, people will sometime light up in the queue for Volcano (if you've been you know it's only a corridor inside the mountain. While I respects people's want to spoke I would like to see a park try a trail run and not allow smoking in the entire park for a month or so, and see if it works or effects attendance. And if it effects them build smoking areas away from the paths and restrooms (KD has its smoking areas by the restrooms so whenever you use the restroom and come out you get blasted by cigarette smoke.

I am a smoker, and a fan of designated smoking areas. SFMM is my home park, and they have done a really good job adding smoking areas. In fact, I almost think there are too many!!!

I dont like smoking in front of kids, so the more secluded, the better. There is one near the entrance to Revolution that is literally right next to the Merry-Go-Round. This one is poorly placed. The ones near Roaring Rapids and Batman the Ride are well placed.

Last time I went to DL I was a little disappointed...they only had two areas and they were literally a minutes walk from each other.

It was funny reading this entire thread and seeing Elissa's comment about SFMM's policies back in 2005. I think they have done a great job stepping up enforcement as well as adding more areas around the park. Somebody mentioned that they would rather smell 'one than thirty,' but with the areas so spread out I dont think this becomes an issue.

Ill stop babbling now!

Chris.

I think that most U.S. park policies are fair with the designated smoking areas. I remember when they first started them, they really weren't being utilized and people were still smoking quite often in queue lines.

Since a lot of parks have been patrolling and enforcing it in recent years, I don't really see it as much of an issue anymore. Most smokers are respective of the new rules, but there will always be people that think they can just light up anywhere.

I quit smoking after it killed my mother in 2002, but still respect the rights of others if they want to smoke - just as long as they are respectful towards those of us that don't!

Dear Cedar Fair and Kings Island:

If you are going to have designated smoking areas, please advertise and inform them better to guests, and enforce your policies.

Sincerely,

'CoastersNSich'

P.S. Could you actually DEFINE what line jumping is on your signs? I try to call out many line jumpers at Diamondback, and they think I'm full of it. (I am not trying to change the topic, but if you're not going to enforce a policy, that probably means you condone certain actions.)

I'm not a smoker, but having been raised in a smoking household, it doesn't bother me in the least when someone around me smokes. But I still feel that people should use the designated areas and just put up with it if you're in line and you want to light up. Just be happy that you are actually allowed to smoke in the park period.

But as for the people who say that smoking should be illegal, that's just retarded. I don't feel that the government should have the power to control what WE put in OUR bodies. It may not seem like it, but saying that smoking should be banned because it is unhealthy and not saying fast food should be banned is a (quite hypocritical) double standard. (Don't get me wrong, I love me some BK!) I'd say its almost as bad as the sex laws that were in place in the first half of the century. Now THOSE... Those were just flat out dumb.

^ I hate how people compare smoking to fast food. Fast food is made so people can have a meal without having to wait for your food. Smoking is designed so people will begin an addiction and the company can make money because smokers need to smoke each day. Fast food may be unhealthy, but most people only eat it once every week or two (if that). You can control what foods you eat but it's hard to control if you continue smoking. That's why I feel the statement, 'if you think smoking should be banned and not fast food, you're a hypocrite' is unfair.

As for myself I'm a nonsmoker (only 13 years old) and I plan to stay that way. As for park policies, I like the fact that there are smoking areas. If you really don't want to smell the smoke from all of the people in the smoking area, plan to somehow avoid it. That's usually easy in most parks.

I disagree; I think for many people fast food is toted as an easy, fast meal; not as a once-a-month unhealthy treat. I simply think that both companies could be said to exploit the addictions of their consumers to their products equally.

EDIT: Oops, I must have misworded my first post. This is what I was trying to say, not that most people look at it as an unhealthy snack, but the fact that it's a fast way to get your food. I personally love fast food and don't think about the unhealthiness while I'm eating it. The only reason I think that statement is unfair is because fast food is meant for you to have a quick, easily accessible meal while smoking is, well, smoking.

But when I eat a big mac with cheese the person sitting next to me does not get fat...

If you (not you specifically) want to smoke thats fine but in a "family" environment I shouldn't have to breathe it.

When I go to a casino I expect to breathe smoke.

When I go to eat or go to a theme park I only expect it if I walk into a certain area.

I should not have to spend an hour wait breathing the crap that you want to put in your body, and no the answer is not, "Just let people cut you or get out of line then."

  • 3 years later...

Browsing old dead topics... I came across this one. I'm wondering if Cedar Point has ever caught up to actually enforcing their non-smoking policy? I was at the park a few times last year and people were smoking everywhere; didn't even seem like a thought or bother. I was surprised as CP was always one of the more rule-consistent parks.

There was recently a story about someone getting kicked out of SFGAm for puffing one of those E-cigs. That opens up a whole can of worms!

Having visited CGA for quite some time now, for the most part people actually stick to the designated smoking areas, which happen to be away from the main path, kind of in a secluded corner. Once Haunt comes around though, it's another story...but again you get all the teens who feel they can do as they please...like smoking and passing a blunt in line just prior to entering the maze. Sad part is that they did it right in front of an employee and nothing was stopped. On the plus side, at least I couldn't smell their blunt though the smell of pot in the air in general was a common scent that evening.

Banning smoking at parks is a terrible idea.

A lot of stubborn people would not take their families/children which would lose the parks a lot of money.

Its really not hard to stay away from smoking areas if the thought of it horrifies you so much.

I agree people should not smoke in lines, I've never actually seen it happen.

Really? Ever been to Italy? I have seen it there a lot and I have even seen it several time at WDW. For the most part people stick to the smoking areas here in the States which is fine by me.
