VegasBaby Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 ^It is a 4 seat model, and I dont know how common they are. A 4 seat model would be ideal for Knott's as that would really help with capacity issues, which is the major drawback with an Air Race.
TopThrill182 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Wow. Didn't Riptide just reopen at the end of last year after a months-long rehab?! When did it last operate? I expected the ride's days were numbered but didn't think the ride would be removed so soon. Knott's is a beautiful park, but the recent removals of Perilous Plunge, Windseeker, and now Riptide--without anything very thrilling being added to replace them--are making me feel increasingly less inclined (as someone without young kids) to visit Knott's over SFMM. Of course, given how Knott's supposedly had a record-breaking year last year, I'm becoming increasingly dubious new thrill rides will be part of the park's future.
DBJ Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I love Air Race flats! Especially after seeing the great looking one that was built at Tivoli Gardens!! Maybe different colors to match the boardwalk better. But the design and elevated platform are great!! Or, if they placed it over where Wind seeker was, they could add seating back to that area under the ride. That is the perfect ride for that area. Would love to see that installed.
chickenbowl Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I hope this is a start to changing up that whole area! I vote they take out boomerang, riptide and the Sky Tower. And then they move Wipeout to Windswekers old spot. And then they use the space from sky tower to riptide and put in an RMC!
Lameformer Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Dang it! I am sad to see Riptide go. I have only ridden it once due to it rarely being open but I really enjoyed my ride on it. It provided some great hangtime and I didn't think that it was that painful.
KBrylczyk Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Never got to ride. I was at the park probably a week after it finally became operational again and jumped in line only to have it die right before I could get on. Oh, well, guess that just means I'll have to settle for big brother Talocan at Phantasialand later this year.
DJeXeL Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Not surprised at all by this. Riptide was a fun ride to both ride and operate but it has been a maintenance nightmare since day 1. I wonder when it will start to get dismantled.
CoasterGuy06 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Some park chains have told me they've spent millions of dollars trying to rehab them only to have them fail a short time later. Yep. For example, Alabama Adventure's HUSS Pirate was only open a total of a couple months the last three seasons that park was open (2009-2011). That was after numerous repairs too.
Vonni Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 There have been rumors through the years that WOF would remove their Top Spin as well. Now with this news it makes me wonder if it is more likely for WOF to remove Thunderhawk, or if they will use Rip Tide for parts to keep Thunderhawk operable?
Nrthwnd Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 (edited) I haven't been able to find this out for now, so I will ask here.. Are the Market Place and Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant's hours the same as the park? I expect that the Market could be open longer (like DL's Main Street) than the park itself. But still, I was wondering... Thanks in advance. Edited February 18, 2016 by Nrthwnd

Just know that the chicken dinner restaurant is currently shut down until springtime for a complete overhaul.
Nrthwnd Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 ^ Oh, I know about the Restaurant's current renovations. But I won't be there until WCB in September, so the timing isn't a problem. But - does it stay open as late as the Market does? Or once the park closes, does it switch to take out, only? Thanks for the other info. about the Market, too. (Yes I know, I know, I need to know EVERYTHING about a place. before I go to it. But it's been since...1996, my last visit there!)
disturboed Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 If I remember rightly from my 2012 visit, we went to Mrs Knotts pretty much on park closing time (it was an early close, like 5 or 6pm) and stayed well past that time for our meal.
Jew Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 There is a separate restaurant for takeout (appropriately named Chicken Dinner Express). The restaurant opens earlier and stays open later than the park.

They are still selling Chicken in a temporary new building, walked out of the park today after 6 and lots of people in there. Rained the last hour 1/2 of the day today, happy ponchos are only $2 there compared to what $7 at SFMM? Rapids was closed, as well as M. Revenge.

The restaurant opens earlier and stays open later than the park. Back in my college days, my friends and I would get takeout from that store when the wait for the restaurant was too long.
VegasBaby Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Looks like Knott's is doing more annual ride maintenance. Bigfoot Rapids is closed until 2/26 and Montezooma is closed until 3/4.
tdaun Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I love Air Race flats! Especially after seeing the great looking one that was built at Tivoli Gardens!! Sorry to go a bit off topic here, I love air races too, but this one shown, unless my eyes are deceiving me, shows a 4 seat passenger car. Is this one the first to offer a 4 passenger car, I've never seen one with this set up before. Lagoon has a 4 seat model, and I think it would be awesome if Knott's were to add one of these. I just rode the one at Lagoon this summer and it was amazing. I think the raised platform could work really well if it is themed to a boardwalk/pier and maybe theme the planes to seaplanes.

rollercoasterpics004 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Took some photos when I was at the park on Friday and Tuesday. Riptide was the only ride closed on Friday, on Tuesday Montezooma and Surfside Gliders were closed. I rode Xcelerator 18 times combined during the visits. Xcelerator had a max 15 min line all day, both days. Rode it 18 times by the end of the second visit. Taken from Silver Bullet's station Lines were nonexistent both days I was there. Silver Bullet ran 2 trains, never broke a station wait. Maintenance on Surfside Gliders, Knotts' Larson Flying Scooters Boomerang looking pretty, riding ugly If you ever have the chance to marathon a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop in the back row, do it. I left after 9 runs, only because the park closed
Nrthwnd Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 ^ The second photo with that "skyline" there, is really really nice. And good catch, with the sun behind Boomerang! I love those kinds of shots. Thanks for sharing your visit.
cfc Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Well, Boomerang looks purty, anyway. Fair of face, but foul of temper.
