Build It And They Will . . . Forget.

Recommended Posts

So as Coaster Enthusiasts I would say a large portion of us keep track of New rides added to parks year to year.

Occasionally however a major attraction at a park slips through the cracks for me. It's not that I didn't know they built it but that I simply forgot that they did.

Most recently I had this happen with two parks I haven't been to in awhile.

First was Diamondback at King's Island.

First of all this is a HUGE attraction but somehow I completely forgot that ride was even in the park!

It was a OMG did I seriously forget about this moment!?

Second was Sky Rocket at Kennywood.

I think this is mainly because I feel its SO over shadowed by other rides at the park that I just forget it's there

Does this happen to anyone else or should I just get my head checked?

Dare Devil Dive for the last time I visited Over Georgia. Sure it's one of those coasters that's hard to miss if you turn left when you enter the park, but being that it practically sits "under" a 200ft B&M hyper, people forget that it's the park's newest roller coaster.

^ I was going to say DDD as well, but for a differnt reason. It is a pretty good ride, but there are many others in the park that I feel are better. For example, Mindbender or Goliath. If it was a longer ride or had more inversions, I probably wouldn't be as apt to forgetting it.

For me it's Adventure Express at Kings Island. The ride is not visible from the midway and the entrance sign just seems to blend into the landscaping.

Flight of Fear is another one even though it's not a big loss for me as I have sworn off of the indoor Premier spaghetti bowls for the rest of my life. After riding KD's last year I just can't handle the ride anymore.

Can I say Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit? Not to shade Universal Studios, but this seems like such a waste of $45 million. I guess the logic was that USF needed a staple coaster, but why did they think THIS was a good idea [especially when all four block breaks are used]? It's crazy to think they could have built a heavily-themed Intimidator 305 at a fraction of the cost.

Last time I was at Disneyland (first visit) there were quite a few things I "forgot" to see, partly because of DCA's construction and partly because I just kept riding Star Tours, California Screamin' and Indy over and over. At least when I head back there will still be plenty I haven't seen before, as well as the stuff that is actually new!

^Why was Hollywood Rip Rocket so expensive?

I assume because of the insane, onboard lighting package, sound system, and touchscreen.

I like HRnR, myself, and I would hardly call it a "forgotten" ride. I'd go along with Adventure Express at KI--an eccentric mine ride that's sort of hidden and has old effects that no longer work.

The classic example in my mind is Mission: Space. I'm sure it does fine with ridership, but for a ride Disney spent a lot of money on, I tend to think of it as an also-ran alongside the likes of Universe of Energy or Living Seas with Nemo. I've never heard anyone ever say "Mission: Space is one of my favorite rides" ever.

In January of 2012, I went down to Florida to visit my cousins in Kissimmee, vowing to ride the famous skycoaster just a few miles from their home. I had no idea that Fun Spot USA had acquired a spinning wild mouse until we drove by it on our way to Legoland just three days before doing the skycoaster. I think that's the biggest surprise for me in terms of size; others include the Alpine Freefalls at the Great Escape last year, the new Star Tours at Disneyland in 2011, Grover's Alpine Express at BGW in 2009, and Maxair at Cedar Point in 2005 (although I wasn't really a part of any coaster community that far back).

Of all things, El Toro when I went in 2008. I hadn't been in '05 and I wasn't really keeping up with park stuff. I remember being completely blown away when I went on it; I had no idea what to expect. I wish I could remember better the first time.

Ehh you would be surprised, Chuck..most of the effects do work! The "now you will pay" guys banging their fists, lights, music, the only thing I don't think works anymore are arrows moving before the first lift. KI has done a decent job keeping the ride's effects alive, along with Italian Job/Backlot.

Pretty sure Canada's Wonderland forgot they had Behemoth when they built Leviathan.

Here are a couple for me.

Backlot Italian Stunt Coaster Job at Kings Island (probably KD and PCW also). Even though it was a major attraction when it was built I was never very impressed with it probably haven't ridden it since opening year, kind of forget it's there half the time I'm at the park.

Mystery Mine at Dollywood. Even though it looks great and is a pretty fun ride overall between Thunderhead, Wild Eagle, and Tennessee Tornado I find myself forgetting Mystery Mine is there. It's still a great little attraction that I'm sure is a fan favorite for a lot of people, but it's usually low on my list when I visit.

Legend at Holiday World. I love the Raven, and like the Voyage quite a bit if it isn't trying to kill me, so between those two Top 10 coasters I usually forget that Legend is even there.

Soarin at Epcot is another one. It's a fun little ride but I don't get much out of it, so unless I'm visiting with friends who have never experienced it I don't ever venture that way.

The "now you will pay" guys banging their fists, lights, music...

I wasn't familiar with Adventure Express before the first time I rode it apart from knowing it was an Arrow Mine Train, but I definitely wasn't expecting that at that end of the ride. It kind of frightened me. It still does, actually...

I say Viper at Darien Lake. Ever since Ride of Steel opened the once major coaster (Viper) kind of faded into "obscurity". And when they built the Swirl City slides in the water park they forget they still had 'Cuda Falls (at least they repainted the slides) since it was on theme park side, but it's still a part of the water park and now 'Cuda Falls/Barracuda Bay is just an old attraction that had faded into obscurity along with Viper, and some of the older flat rides like Haymaker, and Silver Bullet.
