Jason Maier
I rode Desperado last Labor Day weekend. I think they shut it down in January. Rumor has it that they ran it over Memorial Day weekend, but didn't update the site. They seem to be following the Six Flags way of communicating. I've seen said coaster given the (not so) flattering nickname of Despera-DON'T. Is it rougher than the other two Arrow Hypers?
coasterbill
Well... the other ones follow an out and back design, while Desperado just turns... a lot... at high speeds... and Ron Toomer designed it. I thought it was garbage, but your mileage may vary.

I wonder what the whole thought process was of building Desperado in the middle of nowhere (it's not that far from the California/Nevada border)? I really find Magnum enjoyable. Desperado in my opinion was OK. It provies some airtime and enjoyable moments but that is offset by a pretty painful ride to be honest. Is it pure garbage like a Green Lantern at SFMM, or T3 at Kentucky Kingdom- NO, but it is one of the weaker hypers you will ride.

Stateline WAS popular for Californian's who didn't want to drive the extra time onto the strip or deal with the strip since it used to be the first place to legally gamble before Indian casinos popped up all over CA. Nrthwnd
^Wasn't Desperado, "the first of it's kind" as far as a tall, lengthy kind of steel coaster, that it was? Which all of those other coasters around the world followed, eventually? That's what I remember about why it was built. Because it was the first coaster like that. And to draw people in, of course. thrillseeker4552
^Yep. I'm not sure whether Desperado or Pepsi Max Big One opened first (both in 1994), but those two along with Steel Phantom and Magnum were the biggest coasters in the world at the time. And even today, Desperado is the 10th longest roller coaster in the world. I actually really enjoy the coaster. Magnum is definitely better, but I never understood all the extra hate for Desperado. They felt about equally rough IMO, Magnum just had far more airtime.
edgeboy
I feel like Desperado was actually really great in it's heyday. In terms of the layout, I actually love it, especially that long sweeping turn after the first drop. But, to no one's surprise, between it being an Arrow and being independently owned in the middle of a tough climate, I imagine the maintenance hasn't been spectacular as the years have gone by. When I last rode it about a year ago, it wasn't as awful as I was braced for, but it certainly wasn't the smooth experience it was when it first opened. I have heard it's best to sit in a middle seat, so you're not over the wheels. It was rough but mostly tolerable in row #2. By the way, in terms of this thread, is there maybe a separate "Vegas Rides" thread? This Desperado discussion, while interesting, is all happening in the Adventuredome thread. As one poster asked a while ago, is there any update to any progress on their rumored coaster? That news has been very quiet.
ThemeParkJunkie51290
I finally had the chance to go Las Vegas and I took out the time to visit the Adventuredome. My visit to this small indoor theme park was quick and to the point. Literally . . . I'm not joking when I say that. I walked around first. . . Bought two ride tickets for El Loco . . . Rode twice . . . And I left! Canyon Blaster was closed down for repairs which I read about earlier before visiting, so I just had to bite the bullet on that missed credit. It looked like a great coaster, and I'm sure it was probably a fun ride. Oh well . . . that's life. LOL. El Loco on the other hand was truly mind blowing! That first dip, and then that first drop was amazing! And the rest of the ride was outstanding as well in my opinion! Overall, would I pay for an all day wristband? Well, that depends on your purpose. I wanted to site see and I knew Canyon Blaster was closed, so it wouldn't benefit me buying an all day wristband. Heck, I didn't ride any other attractions, but I still had a blast (pun not intended)! I went for that one credit and all was great!
thrillseeker4552
^Too bad you missed out on Canyon Blaster. It's definitely one of the better Arrows out there. The only rough part, for me, was the final helix and some of the transitions in there. The loops and corkscrews were smooth as glass. I agree that El Loco is a great ride. I'm not the biggest fan of the hard seats, but the funky elements and lap bars are definitely a big plus.

But the seats on El Loco wasn't bad in my opinion. They seemed comfortable and provided a great ride. It's a great little park and I suggest anyone to visit. Mr Stratosphere
Hey everyone, Canyon Blaster is still down, but you can see that they’ve been working on the chain.
Mr Stratosphere
As one poster asked a while ago, is there any update to any progress on their rumored coaster? That news has been very quiet. No, still a rumor. The only thing I can report is that the old part of the trough that led to the lift hill (the deepest part of the reservoir) is now party/banquet space. All that is left of the Rim Runner now is the lift, storage and maintenance area and the trough though to what used to be the drop. I still love the fact that Inverter and Rim Runner are still operating well and still look like brand new rides, they really take care of their attractions. As I recall, Dick Kinzel made the decision to built Magnum after seeing pictures of Bandit at Yomiuriland. So Bandit, while not a 200ft coaster, is kinda like the first hyper coaster at least in concept and the beginning of that entire genre.

Jason Maier
Hmm, all that open space. Something like an S&S 4d Free Spin or a Premier Sky Rocket II could go there And is Canyon Blaster as rough as any other Arrow Looper?
coasterbill
Canyon Blaster is fun. It’s not “smooth” but it’s not all that bad and the finale through the crappy mountain is neat. I like it better than El Loco, honestly.

Mr Stratosphere
From https://www.ktnv.com/news/fright-dome-not-happening-at-circus-circus-in-2018 Fright Dome not happening at Circus Circus in 2018 A longtime Halloween tradition will not be happening at Circus Circus hotel-casino in 2018. Egan Productions, which owns Fright Dome, told 13 Action News that Circus Circus informed them that it will not be moving forward with the event this season. The statement continues: While we regret this bad news, we are grateful to the people of Las Vegas for supporting Fright Dome over the past fifteen years. We look forward to many successful Halloween events in the future. No other details have been released.
coasterbill
Was Fright Dome well attended? It seems insane to me that any park would pass on a Halloween event (though obviously this isn't a traditional theme park).
