Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

P. 2037: Siren’s Curse tilt coaster announced for 2025!

Recommended Posts

Cedar Point wins out in overall quality of rides. Magic Mountain does not have any top 10 caliber rides. Cedar Point has Millennium Force, Raptor, Magnum, Maverick and Dragster. Going to Cedar Point is like going on vacation, it is in a gorgeous setting with great rides.

Ah, nothing like overrated rides.

You can say that about CP and SFMM alike. I personally think they BOTH have a great collection of "above average" rides... BUT...

The GP thinks they are EFFING GREAT!!! And that is really all that matters. Each park DOES have a couple of good stand-out rides (Maverick, TTD, Raptor, etc) and (X2, Tatsu, Riddlers, etc) but as a whole, both parks offerings are really just "ok".

It's the compelte package that either makes or breaks the park, depending on what you're looking to get out of it.

Agreed with the person who said "Let's not start another SFMM vs CP war", because the outcome of such a war is that there is no winner. It's like Joshua playing Tic-Tac-Toe against himself. "The only winning move is... not to play."

As an overall theme/ amusement park enthusiast, I really love this park. The number one reason is its location. I can spend a few days there and not all of them involve riding anything. Now, it's no Disney but still a great place to walk around, hang out at the resort or just sit by the water. Plus having some star attractions doesn't hurt any

Agree that it does so well since it offers a very balanced and enticing package, all in a fantastic location. What worked at its founding still very much works today I think. I feel a similar way about Knoebels as another example--great location and overall experience.

The last "coaster" Cedar Point put in was Maverick in 05/07.

Since then (05/07) Magic Mountain has put in: Terminator / Apocalypse, Green Lantern, Road Runner Express, in 2012 Lex Luthor Drop. That's why Magic Mountain is tied with Cedar Point at 17 coasters even counting the removal of Deja Vu!!!

That's 4 new COASTERS since Maverick counting Lex Luthor opening next season.

P.S.: I forgot the "reworking" of Superman in 2011 to deliver a different and in my opinion a better ride.

Firstly, as already mentioned, I'm not sure how Luthor counts as a coaster...

Secondly, I think its important to put all of these additions into perspective. Road Runner is a relocation (far cheaper than buying a new attraction); Lantern is fairly small and compact as far as coasters go (again, cheaper than a full-scale X2 equivalent); and Terminator carried a fairly modest price tag by today's standards ($10 million). By comparison, Maverick cost a cool $21 million. And while they weren't coasters, StR and Windseeker were a hefty investment, too, costing $10.5 million and $5 million respectively. So, from a dollar stand point, CP's recent capital expenditures aren't that far off from Magic Mountain's.

I'm by no means trying to say that one park is better than the other; they just have a different way of doing things. But, just because CP hasn't added a coaster since '07 doesn't mean that CF isn't pouring money into the park.

^^I totally know what you mean, Jason. After hearing both the hype and the criticism and taking both seriously at times, and finally visiting the park myself, I can say it's one of my favorites. Beautiful setting, convenience in the form of Hotel Breakers, and plenty to do on and near the property. I've never done so much non-park and non-ride stuff with a theme park as my base, and I didn't even take advantage of that much! After my one-day credit run, I only re-rode a few coasters during the next two days, and spent the rest of my riding time hitting both iconic and generic flats. Plus I enjoyed a rather intense hibachi restaurant as a break from the terrible park food, checked out some Challenge Park attractions, and spent time just taking in the park atmosphere (which I especially love at night).

While I do feel that a number of coasters are mediocre or only slightly above average, my top four (Maverick, TTD, MF, and Raptor) plus several other solid contenders and just plain fun coasters help "carry" the park for me. And I do love quantity when it comes to coasters; there's something satisfying about conquering more coasters in a day than you could just about anywhere else, not to mention being so thoroughly surrounded by track.

^Windseeker sure has an eye-catching lighting package. My group made a point of riding it just before park closing to take in the nighttime views (it's also fun to ride during the day, watching coasters run and checking for breakdowns).

I was completely enamored with the peaceful, magical ambiance of the Starlight Experience. They'd better keep it up!

It may only be a bunch of lights, but it is probably one of my favorite things to do at night at the Point. IMO it beats the fireworks show by a long shot. That and taking a walk along the beach (minus the bugs).

. I love lit-up coasters, too, especially tracer lights.

Cresting Lightning Racer's lift hill at night looking out over the field at the sea of twinkling lights outlining the ride is like a religious experience. Magnum would look awesome out by the lake with the same kind of package.

^^I feel like the absence of light really adds to the experience for Magnum. Looking out onto the dark lake while plunging 200ft is quite an experience to me! Either way, one of my favorite things to do is ride Magnum in the back and just look back towards all the lights during the drop. Lots of fun!

  • 2 weeks later...

The best rides on Magnum are late night when a low fog/cloud obscures the horizon AND the water. I have been on it when the second hill plunges into absolute darkness. I could barely make out the back of the persons head in front of me let alone anything 20ft out. Those are rides Ill never forget, much like the rides Ive had on Voyage in similar ERT sessions.

In regards to this, "Cedar Point hasn't had a new coaster in 5 years," discussion, Cedar Point's actions seem pretty logical to me. Couldn't we just assume that Cedar Point--like virtually every other business entity out there at the moment--is trying to cut costs? Look at some of Six Flags' recent additions: GL, LLToD, SUF--low capacity, relatively low cost coasters/thrill rides. And many of SF"s other additions are relocations, which also cost considerably less than a new Beemer or Intamin creation. So, while there may be exceptions (X-Flight, Leviathon, etc.) many parks' capital expenditures have shrunk in size in recent years. As many have already pointed out, it's not that CP isn't adding year after year, it's just that their additions haven't been as "splashy" (nor costly) as some of their previous ones. And if we're being honest, haven't many businesses been following that trend for a few years now?

Sorry I couldn't keep quiet on this comment.

Here are the FACTS:

FACT: Dick KInzel hates all Cedar Fair parks except his beloved Cedar Point

FACT: A new coaster has been built every year at Cedar Point from 2007-2011. However, these coasters are only visible to Dick Kinzel and his close friends, because he doesn't care about the company.

FACT: The Intimitadors are illusions and do not really exist. They are part of a huge progaganda campaign. None of us have ever ridden them they don't exist.

FACT: None of the above are true.

I did enjoy Magnum best in the evening. The hills just seem crazier and more surprising.

I'm actually hesitant to ride Maverick during the day since it was just so amazing at night. Millennium Force at night is also a great experience, although I did feel it 'rode' similarly in the morning.

From Screamscape:

2013 - New Coaster - Rumor - (12/29/11) Another Screamscape source has confirmed hearing that a new B&M coaster is supposed to be in the works for The Point in 2013. So will it be something standard like a Floorless or a Dive Machine, one of the new Wing coasters or perhaps something we’ve never seen before?

I really don't think Cedar Point would just go with a standard B&M. There would be something pushing the envelope, something new. I'd love to see a B&M launch, but it seems unlikely considering their past three coasters have been launched. I think my best guess would either be a B&M giga (with a twist though, so it and Millie are different. Maybe something like inversions.) Or a Wing Coaster.

Another thing I've thought about is, as I mentioned, the point getting another giga. I could totally see that happening, and it would be great for marketing. I could imagine something like I305 would be fitting, considering it and Millie are very different experiences.

These are just rumors made up by the CP fan forums, take them with a grain of salt.

I guess some of them found out about the "5 rides" deal with Intamin and are now screaming out that B&M will make the next coaster, because CP can not possible be happy with Intamin..

T o be honest I can not really see CP adding any of the current B&M's, I would guess that it would be a new concept, if it were indeed B&M. It has been in the making for like 5 years soon..
