Worst Ride Replacements/Downgrades

Recommended Posts

Shockwave @ SFGA being replaced by Superman. This is a selfish response as I prefer Shockwave over Superman. However, I understand that Shockwave's attendance was way down and it's maintenance cost was high.

Now if you ask me for the best ride replacement I would say Goliath replacing Iron Wolf. Those stand up coasters do a number on the old testicles.

The Old Mill at Kennywood becoming Garfield's Nightmare...I hope that classic haunted gem gets restored sooner than later.

Also, Disaster Transport for Gatekeeper -- and the thing is, I'm only half-kidding!

It was time for DT to go, but it had refreshing AC, still delivered a solid family ride, filled a role in the shrinking middle class of the park's lineup, could house a haunt in the building, and the MST3K fan in me could laugh along to the uneven and totally campy 80's sci-fi theme.

I like Gatekeeper's nice paint job and the revamped front gate, but not a whole lot else. Another high-capacity coaster with a seating gimmick & categorical records to promote, sure, but a sorely-needed Gold Striker-esque woodie would have filled a much greater need in the park's lineup. If the Mantis conversion goes over well, it's possible that the park's two older B&M brothers make their younger winged sibling a superfluous add.

Shockwave being replaced with Superman and Deja Vu being replaced with Bucaneer Battle at Great America.

I was going to post the same thing. Seeing Shockwave and hearing the screams when entering the parking lot got me excited to ride coasters. It was a bit of a headbanger, but it was a thrilling ride. Superman's thrill factor pales in comparison. Deja Vu is my all time favorite SFGAm ride so I was really sad to see it go. I still get mad every time I see Buccaneer Battle.

Removing Looney Tunes National Park at SFGAm for the relocated go-carts - a very bad move IMO.

The go kart ridership seemed to decline in the years leading up to the Hurricane Harbor expansion and I thought they were gone for good. I was shocked to see that the go karts replaced Looney Tunes National Park. The park removed the best kids area in the park and I believe that spot has had a kids area since 1976. The park must have thought that putting the go karts in a high traffic area would generate more money and that makes sense. It doesn't seem to have worked and it's a big eyesore. Sadly I don't think the go karts are going away anytime soon.

This may not be the worst, but I'll mention removing Great American Scream Machine for Green Lantern.

I half agree with this. When Garfield's Nightmare was new, it was enjoyable. Nowadays...it's awful. I don't think a single moving piece inside of there works anymore. Since they don't seem to be interested in fixing what's there, we can only hope they'll change it into something else.

Apocalypse at SFA replacing Skull Mountain (Typhoon Sea Coaster). I understand SM was bad when it came to maintenance (and the fact the park was in desperate need of another coaster), but it was one of the most unique and probably one of my favorite water rides of all time. I'm not a fan of Apocalypse either.

Hercules for hydra.

Are you being serious? Hercules was horrible in so many ways. It was trimmed to death and it was still rough.

The only good part about Hercules was the drop, and it was trimmed. If Hydra got put in last year I would agree.

Hercules would have made a kick ass RMC conversion.

Kozmo's Kurves replacing High Speed Thrill Coaster was pretty bad if you ask me.

I disagree. Kozmo's Kurves is incredibly fun, and it's definitely worthy as the replacement for the High Speed Thrill Coaster.

Curious to see if anybody would say Big Bad Wolf > Verbolten.

I'm sort of indifferent to both to be honest, so it's a toss up for me.

That would kinda surprise me; I can't see that as anything like a worst. It might not be -great-...I know a lot of people, myself included, loved the Wolf...but Verbolten is a pretty solid ride that seems to at least get general respect. There are enough cases of good rides being replaced by terrible ones (Hello Stinger) that one being replaced by a decent-if-not-quite-amazing one couldn't really compete for this title.

Personally, the one that sticks out for me isn't a coaster at all, but Extraterrorestrial Alien Encounter being replaced by Stitch. Yes, I know the former wasn't really a "Dinsey" ride, and yeah, Stich is kinda cute...but Alien encounter was just awesome. At least, so my teenage self remembers.

-edit-

I'd also throw in Journey into Imagination being replaced with Journey into YOUR Imagination at Epcot and Questor with King Arthur's Challenge at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Well, that would break down as follows:

Questor > Corkscrew Hill > Europe in the Air > King Arthur's Challenge

Oh, better answer! I never rode King Arthur's Challenge but definitely can go with Europe in the Air replacing Corkscrew Hill. Still miss that one.

Mine are when Darien Lake replaced Scrambler with Moose on the Loose in Rowdy's Ridge, and also replacing the Cuda Falls water slides with nothing for now and also Darien Lake replacing UFO with a Super Loop and removing Nightmare at Cave for Galaxy Theater.

A (dis)honorable mention is Cedar Point replacing Wildcat with bleachers for the stage by Iron Dragon!
