The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

P. 132: Royal Caribbean releases new Ultimate Destination details

Full disclosure: he's also a "survival camper" - the kind of guy who goes out in the woods for several days and only takes what's in his pockets. His idea of "not that bad" and ours are likely very different. I was just reporting what he said.

Full disclosure would have included writing this caveat in your first post.

^That is awesome. Really interested to see how the tests with the new high speed satellites work out. The CIO is 100% correct in saying that more and more people just expect to be able to get online wherever they are, and they need to find solutions for this. Another reason why RCCL is a great company.

While i understand the Cruises need to serve all kinds of people and needs, I was kind of hoping that the ships never really develop a reliable internet connection. Cruise Ships seem to be one of the last places where you can truly turn off your phone and be unreachable for a week.

^I hate that argument.

Some of us own our own businesses and CAN'T afford to be 'away from everything' for a week. We need reliable internet to do work and check on things. If a vacation option doesn't have this, we can't partake. We're not annoying anyone else by going online, we should be allowed to, and have good service for doing so.

Not to mention parents who travel without their kids, or with sick or elderly loved ones at home, I really don't think it's a good idea to be 'unreachable' for most people nowadays.

^ Yeah, I'm with you on that. When we cruised with you guys, I still found it really easy to turn off my phone for the entire week and ignore the outside world....and it didn't bother me at all that everyone else wanted to "stay connected." It's just different strokes for different folks.

Plus, if RCL doesn't upgrade their systems, how is anyone supposed to log on and post updates of laughter as they pass by a stranded Karnival ship?

I have to say that some form of communication is neccesary for most people. We cruised Oasis in Dec 2011, I switched my phone off but purchased then internet package for my Ipad. I have disabaled mom at home it was imperative that I keep some form of contact with her..email, facebook. I had someone kind of keeping an eye out on her but I still needed to keep in touch. I did enjoy no phone and texts tho. Very peaceful.

^Exactly. You don't have to get online if you don't want to. But some people need to be able to get online every day, even if it's only for a few minutes to check emails or communicate quickly with a family member or whatever. And as it was pointed out, RCCL realizes this, and is taking steps to make sure people can do this. Again, this is a very smart move on their part.

A bit off topic but the guy who plans on building the "Chinese Titanic Knockoff" also announced plans to build a real life Jurassic Park.

I say, build this first! http://screenrant.com/real-life-jurassic-park/

It should also be noted that the Chinese facility where Titanic 2.0 will be built has never constructed a ship of this size and it doesn't even have a dry dock to build it in.

-Chris "note: neither one be built" con

or

-Chris "wishes he was an eccentric billionaire that could take LSD and just start announcing terrible ideas" con

I don't know which idea to hold my breath over first! Chinese Titanic or Australian Jurassic Park!?!? They're both too amazing to ever happen.

Totally picturing a T-Rex chasing Jake and Amber down the road...

^^The guy who's funding these little projects, Clive Palmer, is definitely doing his best to redefine just what it means to be an eccentric billionaire!

Oh, and apparently he's running for Parliament too.

Why? Is he in Australia or something?

I'm not sure? I wish he would have posted more of his plans, or maybe a countdown or some way of knowing if he'd be going or not.

So now that the Carnival Triumph is now undergoing repairs, what kind of work does it take to get it back into service? Does it have to go back through sea trials and re-commissioning? I just find it a bit intriguing to the process, and what the first voyage back would be like. Not that I would be sailing with Carnival, totally Loyal to Royal!

^^That's actually a huge deal that's been talked about for awhile now. All people can figure out is that Carnival must be paying a TON of money to RCCL for it! Plus unless they make RCCL pull down certain signs or change amenities on the island it will be like a commercial for another cruise line when you go to their island. Actually, I take that back. I doubt your average Carnival cruiser will even know or understand that it's RCCL's island and I'm sure Carnival won't exactly let people know. They'll probably send their workers out before each ships arrival and cover up all the RCCL signs!!
