Mr. Six Returns

Wasn't Mr. Six introduced just right before Six Flags sold their NE Ohio park to Cedar Fair?

Anyhow, bravo to Six Flags! Yeah, they tried those "More Flags! More Fun!" but I don't think it would have ever endured like Mr. Six has. Not to mention the guy in the More Flags! ads drew allegations of Asian stereotypes. Weird as he is, Mr. Six is someone people actually identify with the parks.

I believe this was the first Six Flags commercial AFTER Mr. Six was retired. This thing is GOD AWFUL.

What is going on in this commercial? Are the rides ATTACKING the children? They seem like they are running away and screaming and then you hear what sounds like Roller Coaster Tycoon sound effects in the background. Terrible!

You would think that this commercial would scare children more than a dancing old man. I can't believe Six Flags would have thought this campaign was BETTER than Mr. Six.

The rep from SFGAm hinted that Mr. 6 might actually be a replacement for the "More flags, more fun" Asian guy, in that he would be rating rides (on intensity?) in the commercials. Apparently he will be talking in the commercials, unlike the previous round of commercials several years ago.

She also said Mr. 6 would be a face character in the parks, posing for pictures with guests. He will move slowly and act like an old man for a while, and then dance like crazy when the song starts playing.

How was that much different then the ad for X2!? Pretty damn similar to me (and I personally like it) they were going for the teen set and I think that would be perfect for teenagers who wanted that "extreme park" that Six Flags was going for at the time.

^ It was a generic commercial for the entire chain and they just slapped the park name at the end.

That's where the last Mr. Six ad campaign went wrong IMO. I seem to remember most of the commercials following this formula: fun commercials with slapped on generic b-roll footage and voice overs for each park at the end. The end result was everyone knew Mr. Six...but they never really sold the parks themselves.

A chain of parks can't really help that though. It is a lot more cost effective to just have one generic commercial after another with Mr. Six in it. The Mr. Six character can't possible shoot footage at every single park. All people need to know is Mr. Six = Six Flags. It is just simple brand recognition. Then, of course, you can have a different set campaign tailored to each individual park, promoting a new ride or attraction of some sort, and have those air in each specific market. But those don't necessarily have to have Mr. Six in them either.

^I understand that the cost would have been more (but really, how much more would some green screen shots cost?!), but your point about them only needing people to know that Mr. Six=Six Flags is exactly what I was talking about.

The point I was trying to make is that the ads did nothing to sell the brand. I think it's safe to say that most people recognized Mr. Six as the Six Flags guy, but that's about all everyone took from the ads. They didn't really do anything except make Mr. Six a pop culture icon. Which, granted, got the Six Flags name out there more, so I guess you can say their mission was accomplished. However, like I said, it never translated into results because Mr. Six became the brand, rather than the parks themselves being the brand that Mr. Six helped people recognize.
