BarryH Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 There's plenty of stupid people out there. The croc's dinner was one of them. I mean, who the heck pesters and throws rocks at crocodiles anyway? I don't know how fast crocs run, but I know alligators are pretty fast. They may not look like speed demons, but they are pretty good runners. Believe me, I hear people who have their dogs eaten by stray gators in Florida neighborhoods.
BeemerBoy Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 They probably underestimated how fast a croc can be. Typically in a zoo they'll just sit there not doing anything. Maybe the kids saw that which made them feel safe jumping the fence. But not realizing that when crocs act, they can snap in a split second. While there may be some truth to that, the underlying point still remains. It really doesn't matter what ate him; a croc, a bunny rabbit, or an ill-tempered shark with a frickin' laser beam on it's head, fences are put in place for a reason. I'm trying real hard to feel some kind of sympathy in this situation, but so far, it escapes me. My only real surprise was that this wasn't some white trash kid in the states.
Calaway Park Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Reminds me of a sign at a golf course in Florida. "If gator in trap, drop ball." If the gator takes the ball, don't try to wrench it's mouth open... Kind of sad that they have to have a sign that states that... It's no different from teasing a strange dog, you get bit, it's your fault. It really angers me that the animal was put down for the kids stupidity. I feel awful for not having sympathy for this kid, but wow. That's stupider than standing up on a coaster.
metrock Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I am already thinking about the benefits of crocs at Magic Mountain...

Oh trust me I have no sympathy in this situation. I was just trying to find reasons why these kids were so stupid.
kraxleRIDAH Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Like a lot of you, my sympathies go only to the crocodile. How humans justify killing a wild animal that's kept captive against its will just because it acts out of instinct is beyond me. It's like when harbor patrol is ordered to hunt down and kill a shark that just attacked a swimmer on a beachfront. It's ridiculous isn't it? Humans don't live in the ocean. Sharks do. But when a shark mistakens one of us for a potential meal, it gets killed just because "we" don't want a dangerous animal around when "we" go swimming.
VegasCoaster Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Would a crocodile be a foreign animal that they wouldn't have understood the danger invovled? I kind of think the general look of a croc doesn't scream safety. To me it doesn't look like a ohh lets go cuddle with it kind of animal. I know thats not what you were getting at, but it just makes me wonder that much more what the hell they were doing. Poor croc.
Calaway Park Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Wow...common sense, anyone? No, you can't download that.
OBXcoasterman Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 You guys have said all the important stuff, so here goes with the other side. Did the croc at least get an egg roll after his meal? or Said one Croc to another, "Dang, I never get enough Duck sauce". or "Wow,they do taste like chicken" and don't get so upset, it not like there is a shortage of chinese children! Carnage Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I guess it's pretty obvious what the crocodile's fortune cookie read.

So not only are we in their home we also dress like their favorite meal. Brilliant.
RollerC Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Why does this only seem to happen in country's like China? I have come to the assumption that ALOT of chinese parks have poor safety standards. You never hear about a 5yr old boy getting mauled to death at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo...yet i'm not surprised at all to hear that some kid in China was eaten by a gator.
larrygator Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 ^becasue lawsuits are not as prevalent in China
Louise Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 ^^ We've had SEVERAL near-misses with this kind of thing in the UK, I remember a few quite vividly, but no actual fatalities spring to mind. I think perhaps Larry does have a point, fences are higher (metaphorically and literally) in the US in many instances due to fear of litigation.
shesaidboom Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Why does this only seem to happen in country's like China? I have come to the assumption that ALOT of chinese parks have poor safety standards. You never hear about a 5yr old boy getting mauled to death at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo...yet i'm not surprised at all to hear that some kid in China was eaten by a gator. Actually stuff kind of like that does happen here. I remember reading a story not too long ago about a girl who stuck her hand in a meerkat enclosure and got bitten. Since it was undetermined if the meerkats had rabies or not, she either had to get a rabies shot [which are not pleasant!] or the meerkats had to be put to sleep because the only way to tell if they did had rabies was to do a brain biopsy. Of coures if they did she'd have to get the shot anyway! The girl's parents threatened to sue the zoo if they didn't put the meerkats to sleep, so they did. If it were my kid that did they, they'd be getting the rabies shot! They were the idiot who stuck their kid in the enclosure. Not the same as being eaten by a crocodile, but animals still had to be put to sleep due to human child stupidity. I'll see if I can find the article. I can't remember which zoo it happened at, but I know it was in North America. EDIT: The article is no longer up since it was posted a really long time ago, but the text was copied and pasted somewhere else, so here you go.. Meerkat family euthanized at zoo APPLE VALLEY, Minn., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Five meerkats at the Minnesota Zoo were euthanized after a 9-year-old girl stuck her hand into their enclosure and got bitten. The animals -- two adults and three young born this spring -- tested negative for rabies, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported. They had been vaccinated, but state law required them to be killed and tested because the girl's parents did not want her to have rabies shots. "Although we knew there was just a minute chance they had rabies, we had no choice in this," said Tony Fisher, the collections manager. "Of course, the public's safety comes first." The meerkats, foot-long mongoose relatives native to the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa, were among the zoo's most popular exhibits. The zoo hopes to add a female to its four surviving male meerkats to get another family going.
Gnome Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I hate when they say bull crap like, "Public Safety comes first." He should be like, "NO, if this ard tard is going to stick thier hand into the meerkat cage and get bitten, its no ones fault but thier own. They will have to deal with the consequences of such actions." Really I think that's why our society is becoming worse because we pull stupid crap like this then demand we get away with it.
the sound Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I'm sure this is true, but you should never trust anything that is in or from the Herald Sun!!!
Menghini Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Hmm, it happens much closer to home... My father once had bees (he quit that hobby just a year ago) and the hives stood in an open, private field. Still the children from the neighborhood came very close and threw rocks, poked with sticks and closed the hives (so the bess would die). My father became angry and put his most stingy/angry beehive in front. You should have seen the angry parents and their blown up children! My father was angry too and said it was their own fault, still they put up a fence and he enclosed the hives, so children couldn't get very near. But that doesn't stop them somehow. It was one of the reasons why my father quit. All those angry parents... About the crocodile: it's still a wild animal and it will protect his territory and/or eat anything that has meat on it. So: stupid child, I agree.
jarmor Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 ...im waiting for the video footage! Im sure someone was filming their day at the zoo...
RollerC Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 ...im waiting for the video footage! Im sure someone was filming their day at the zoo...Do you really want to see some Croc devour a little kid?
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I hate how the animals end up paying the price for human negligence as the crocodile was shot. This happened recently in my town where a kid at a local park in Richmond got loose from his parents and entered a fenced off area for bears. Of course, the kid was bitten by a bear and the animal was put down. It's because once an animal tastes human blood I gets basically addicted to it and is much more likely to attack humans on its own.
J man Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 So did they shoot all 11 of the crocodiles that ate the kid or just the one that dragged him in?
