Whats that controversial coaster that comes to mind! Kinda like coaster scandal where something was covered but was later surfaced. I can think of V2 at Six Flags Marine World. It was kinda funny how six flags "forgot" to put the right height on the release and advertised it as 150....

Then it got circumsized and turned out to be a one of a kind coaster!

I know that the Double Shot tower @ SCBB went through some trouble because locals were worried of birds flying into the tower...like birds are that stupid. Tower is up and I think it's already open.

Actually the Santa Cruz People ARE that stupid, the birds are fairly intelligent, comparitivly speaking

This is the same group who's city council spent WAY to much time debating whiether people were pet owners, or pet gaurdians, because can you really own a living thing, man

the SCBB wanted to expand into the beach flats area, and if you know santa cruz you know that that is the area where basically all the drug crime originates, and they would have bought the small area out, a few city blocks, and turned it into part of the SCBB, but the city council was worried about the drug dealers, and the poorer families that were forced to live in that hell hole wouldn't have a place to go, so they did nothing when something very positive could have been done to help families get out of a bad situation, and expand the citys tax revenue

Pretty much anything they build at Alton Towers seems to be controversial.

Seriously, the community surrounding that place seems to complain about EVERYTHING. I'm really rather glad that the parks in Florida don't have to put up with grouchy neighbors.

The Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer comes to mind.

They've been fighting to get that thing built for quite sometime.

Or the hypercoaster for Six Flags Mexico. That thing sat for years because they started construction too soon.

^ It could never be as controversial as it's papa. A rider was thrown from the Ravine Flyer and the ride was torn down.

I would say "Tsunami" comes to mind when I think of controversial coasters.

// Now ... do I get to count it twice?

Acutally Universal did, which is why they built those big walls behind Dueling Dragons

Son of Beast. Lots of people thought the ride idea was crazy. There was big debate about whether you could call it a looping woodie since the structure of the loop is steel, and a local Cinci church threw a fit over the abbreviation, SOB. Then, there was the big lawsuit between PKI and Roller Coaster Corporation of America.

Wait...are they doing some major changes to it???

Hmm well according to RCDB Clementon changed the name of Tsunami to J2... Or apparently JackRabbit 2... Maybe in respect for the disaster?

I never really understood that sort of thing anyway. I was so pissed when they took out scenes from Metal Gear Solid 2's ending that had the Twin Towers... They took out portions that meant it just kinda didn't flow at all...

BTW anyone know what happened to the campaign to save the JackRabbit?

Robb-

Pretty much everyone seems to be in agreement that there is no way Tsunami can operate like it did at the end of last season. The coaster would have simply torn itself to pieces. Rumors are ranging from trims to actually chopping and redoing parts of the coaster. However, I don't think they have the money to do major work on it. Don't forget, Clementon is FOR SALE...

Well, if you're talking about coasters and lawsuits, you can't forget X, the ride which put Arrow out of business. Basically, because X opened late, Six Flags witheld payment and sued Arrow for 5.8 Million, forcing them into bankruptcy (leaving them open to being bought up by S&S). I always found it kind of funny that Arrow's first (Matterhorn) and last (X) coasters are both located right off I-5, about an hour away from each other.

SFMM was also sued by an Annual Passholder because X was closed for so long, but I don't think that lawsuit went anywhere.

There is also Hershey's never built Frequent Faller, where Interactive Rides failed to deliver the plans on time, Hersheypark sued them for breach of contract, IR sued HR back for not paying on time, and the whole thing is still, as far as I know, being worked out in court.

I know that AT was mentioned as a whole being a contraversial park but would like to point out why as it's probably pretty obvious. First off, Oblivion being contraversial because of our best friends: The Ropers. They complained due to the fact they can hear Oblivion's noise...I'd be happy to hear a coaster from my room.

Wasn't their shuttle loop coaster removed because it was visable above tree-line?

I hear ya. I used to live across the bridge from the beach flats. That area can get really shady at night. I remember some random person got shot near there on NYE the first year I lived there. I imagine a lot of people are "trapped" in that area. I rented a one bedroom apartment for $1200 a month and that was considered cheap.

I'm surprised the double shot got cleared at all. Santa Cruz has never been very tourist friendly and they generally oppose any expansion of any kind. It's a shame.. especially since most of the people who go to the boardwalk come from San Jose. Hardly any locals go to that park.

That is TOTALLY true. My former roomate moved back to Santa Cruz and rented a Studio Apartment for $950 a month, YIKES

The Santa Cruz City Goverment had a chance, to not only clean up the worst part of town, but find a way to really help people in need, no one wants to raise their children in that environment.

The area is very pretty, but I'm very glad I left

To all you riders and amusement park flyers, I've found another post that has spent ages within the back of the old, dusty vaults of themeparkreview that has spent five and a half years unread, until I happened upon it and decided that this old post is worth a revisit.

I should begin with a fresh new title that will read in big black letters:

CONTROVERSIAL COASTERS 2.0

"Okay, now we're back in business! Do you care to begin this new version?"

Two coasters do comes to mind: "Flying Turns" at Knoebels and the defunct coaster at Kings Dominion called "Hypersonic XLC".

With the old Hypersonic, that poor coaster suffered many breakdowns, many repairs, and many, many other things during its short lifespan. When Cedar Fair came on board, one of the first things they did was to give Hypersonic the axe due to its low capacity. Today, a structure used for their annual Halloween Hauntss stands where the queing lines once where and the old station is still there - rotting away. One more thing about this station - it had two sets of queing lines: one for regular riders and the other for "fass pass" riders (Back in 2001, Kings Dominion was experimenting with the fass pass lines in which two coaster cars would serve the regular riders and a third would serve the fass pass riders. Hypersonic and Volcano were the only two coasters that offer this program. But the program was a bust, so the idea was abandoned and the second set of queing lines inside the Hypersonic station was never used).

As for Flying Turns, it has been nearly three years since Knoebels made its announcement and the coaster has been plagued with problems after problems. I feel that, sooner of later, that Knoebles may give up on the Flying Turns and just turn that whole thing into one big bonfire. If you all want to ride a bobsled coaster, then just head over to Avalanche. At least nothing's controversial about that ride (except for one to wonder why the queing line isn't long enought. Well, I asked that same question about the Shockwave).

All right, dear readers; I gave you mine, now how about yours?

"I think it is controversial that I don't get used very much nowadays. All I ever asked for was just your head to lie upon me in bed, is that so hard?"

The GCI that was suppose go in to Great Ameica a year and a half ago, but never happened because of the neighbors of the park.

Posted

Sea World San Diego for sure, just in general. More specifically, Journey to Atlantis & the whole Dona Frye debacle. Even the new roller coaster in the planning stages is already pretty controversial.

The whole CGA/49ers issue is huge.

The forever changing the name and adding of trims to Tsunami/J2/Hell Cat.

Th13teen being a total flop.

Terminator Salvation first having effects, then no effects, and now no license.

SFNE's Thomas Town being closed and possibly dismantled after only a few years of operation.

Flying Turns.

The Frequent Faller at HersheyPark.

How could I forget Son of Beast and it's just sitting there.
