mordecai-75 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Just had a random thought on the structure at the top of Lightning Rod. I hope the entire launch ends up being enclosed, but what if it's just been added for wasp prevention? Wild Eagle and Thunderhead have had issues with the wasps, ( the whole reason they both have the mist sprayer's at the top of them. ) In my opinion, that can't be good for Thunderhead's longevity, ( keeping the wood soaked on a dailly basis. ) Maybe they planned out a solution to the problem and are just incorporating it into the build. I really hope it's more than that though, just a random thought.
Guy T. Koepp Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 ^Not to put a hole in your theory, but wasps and hornets like shaded areas. That's why they can always be found in the awnings and porches of most houses in this area. I know my barn is home to probably thousands of them. They love rafters and wood beams. I have to go through my garage several time a summer with wasp spray and kill budding nests. Realistically, I think covering the launch is like creating a perfect opportunity for an innumerable number of nests. Honestly, I think the best they can do is spray for them and hope for the best. Unfortunately, they're just common to the area. What's the difference between Bees and wasps? Bees help the ecosystem. Wasps are just dicks!
mordecai-75 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 ^ fair enough, like i said, (random thought ) i was also hoping to get a little feedback on constantly wetting a wonderful wood coaster. thought's?
DoinItForTheFame Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 constantly wetting wonderful wood ---------------- In all seriousness, I wouldn't for see constantly wetting a wooden coaster. I for some reason feel like that wold cause problems in the long run.It sounds like it would cause the structure to rot or something... unless it's treated wood.... maybe?? But then again, I really don't know anything about how well wooden coasters hold up due to excessive moisture exposure. . .
CP Maverick Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Treated wood and sunlight eliminate most threat of damage by spray. As it is, I've never seen spray on Thunderhead, and only twice on Wild Eagle.
WindexCyanide13 Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Hi, I was just looking at Dollywoods calendar and I'm seeing all of these dates for November and December. Do they run the rides at these times?
Dollywoodlover20 Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 They run rides unless it gets below 34 degrees (Pretty sure 34 was the temp.) . I went at the end of last November at the temp. struggled to get above 30 that day. Only thing we could do was walk, eat, and watch a few shows. So I suggest going on a day that has the highest probability of sun and warm temps.
Devins3 Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I go every year the first week they are open from Thurs-Sun in November. The rides are almost always open, maybe shutting down near closing. Even if the rides are closed the lights are a draw all on their own, it's very impressive how many lights are up in the park for Smokey Mountain Christmas. If you have never been to the park during this time I cannot recommend it enough.
Vonni Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I've never been to Smokey Mountain Christmas, but I have been to SDC Old Time Christmas. It truly is magical. Even if Coasters and rides are not operable, the experience is a must.
Bobby2889 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 https://instagram.com/p/9YfgzxM_D1// Found a pic of the drop!
DoinItForTheFame Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Ugh, that drop looks so amazing!!! Can't wait to go down on it!
CoasterMateo Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 IT. LOOKS. AMAZING! Words can not describe it.
FaithPlus1 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Ugh, that drop looks so amazing!!! Can't wait to go down on it! Ugh?
Dollywoodlover20 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I was going to post the exact same picture earlier haha. Yes the drop looks amazing, I'm guessing that we are just going to have to relay on Instagram photos taken from the employee parking lot for updates because that's where all these photos of the other side are coming from haha. RMC has so many projects going on at one time they can't keep us updated. I just wonder what would happen if a normal person drove up into employee parking lot to take a few pics?
Superbatboy Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Ugh, that drop looks so amazing!!! Can't wait to go down on it! Ugh? Yes, Ugh as in so amazing that it's disgusting. Like saying something is stupidly awesome etc
Password121 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Can't wait to go down on it! Was this just... I read this wrong. Very very wrong. In all seriousness, holy sh*t! Because it'll have considerable speed leading into the drop, I think of it as massively upscaled El Toro-esque airtime hill, but twice as tall and 10 degrees steeper. When you think of it like that it reaches a whole new level.
Philrad71 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 This looks like it could end up having one of the amazing first drops on a coaster ever. Wow.
ImNotOneOfYou Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 IT. LOOKS. AMAZING! Words can not describe it. What about indescribable?
FaithPlus1 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 IT. LOOKS. AMAZING! Words can not describe it. What about indescribable? Better than "Ugh!"
A.J. Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Wait a second. A decently-sized first drop, a much larger second drop, and coaster trains themed to actual cars? Lightning Rod is basically Manhattan Express.
ImNotOneOfYou Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Wait a second. A decently-sized first drop, a much larger second drop, and coaster trains themed to actual cars? Lightning Rod is basically Manhattan Express. People like you make me want to ERT Mean Streak on a wheel seat.
Brassinthegrass Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 AJ, don't you DARE say such things. Hold your tongue sir. Hold it and bite it!!!
Guy T. Koepp Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Wait a second. A decently-sized first drop, a much larger second drop, and coaster trains themed to actual cars? Lightning Rod is basically Manhattan Express. Only, fun to ride. Exactly what I was thinking!
A.J. Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Exactly what I was thinking! In all seriousness, me too. It'll be great, can't wait for next year.
