Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (SFDK) Discussion Thread

I wouldn't say the park is poorly attended at all, but its also much more than a coaster park. The patrons tend to skew more toward younger children, and they hit up the kiddie areas, the flats, and the animal exhibits. Medusa is rarely more than a 20 minute wait, V2 is rarely more than a 3-4 train wait, and Superman tends to be around 30 min. Roar used to be the coaster with longest lines, because younger children could ride.

Went to the park yesterday. Bring a friend free day. Oops. Big mistake on my part. Parking was in the fairgrounds lot. My son and I did Medusa, Superman, and V2 in about 2 1/2 hours and left.

Yep, that sounds about right for the late august/September BAFF days given my experince with them in 2014 and 2015. You got 2015 and 2016 pass users all vying to use it. This sunday is the last in this round of BAFF not to mention being the parks first GLBT day as well.

Watch out for the cheer jamz thing during like the two middle sundays of fright fest. Maybe I just find it annoying but I never had a good time when I accidentally encountered those.

Is attendance typically pretty strong on weekend at SFDK or just during special events? I haven't been there in years, but I always assumed it had lousy attendance given that it has seemed very neglected in the ride department after that initial blast of Medusa, Roar and the impulse coaster in a short period of time.

In truth, SFDK never had much of a drought investment of capital...

2003 brought Zonga, 2004 and 2005 brought their trademark Killer Whale show and Ocean Discovery (the large bulk of the marine life attractions), 2007 brought the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom full purchase of the park at $16 million rebranding, 2008 brought the Gerstlauer spinning coaster and Holiday in the Park, 2009 brought Odin's Temple of the Tiger (to date the largest draw in the park besides the dolphin shows), 2010 brought Dolphin Discovery, and 2011 and 2012 brought SkyScreamer and Superman.

The injection of so much ride capital in the beginning (see five coasters from 2000-2005) left much to be desired at the park given that height restrictions placed all the coasters in the front of the park and the early wildlife attractions were lacking. Until post rebranding around 2009, SFDK never felt like much of a park. Given that there isn't much competition in the Bay Area for new thrills ::cough:: CGA, nuff said ::cough::, I'd say SFDK has done a surprisingly consistent job.

I never elected to go saturday's just because I think it would be more crowded then sundays and during spring/summer I try to go monday-thursday if I can. Anyways I for once can ride their coasters many times over, so i'm sure others can as well. Even with roar gone they still got 2 really good coasters 1 decent coaster and 2 vakoma's.

on top of that you got the animal encounter stuff and those shows. There's zero reason to be bored at SF:DK on a normal operation day. so the only thing that throws a kink in that plan for me is 1. not having a idea on what to do while there or 2. the park is really filled up with guests.

Id be far more bored with CGA simply because they only got two coasters I want to ride and both are in the front area of the park and after that the only animals in the parks are well, people.

A couple deconstruction photos posted on Facebook by the park:

I find it amazing how many people complain about this in the comments of the Facebook post. I've heard about this from other parks who RMC their rides (Twisted Colossus), but I've never seen it myself. These people have no idea how lucky they are.

There was a ton of backlash and complaining when they announced and started tearing down Colossus too, but I don't hear any complaining now.

Exactly, most of the people complaining have never ridden a RMC coaster. I'll bet that all those haters go away once the ride actually opens and they see how awesome it is.

Hell, I probably have stronger connection to the ride than most, it was the very first coaster I ever operated. I spent many fun and happy years either operating the ride or supervising it. All that said, BRING ON RMC! Roar was a fun ride, but after riding Twisted Colossus (my first RMC) for the first time this past weekend... I'm 10 times more excited for this. People complain to complain... it's what the internet has become. Complaining about things that people don't fully understand has got to be the internet's second biggest export now a days (porn still being number 1 of course).

I will never deny how "short" and uninspired the layout is, for the most part. Colossus really got chopped!

^ Yeah. Riding Twisted Colossus is a tough life, but someone's gotta do it.

EDIT: Wait... this is the SFDK thread. Oops. Yay Joker! I'm definitely planning a trip to check out this bad boy... along with a return visit to Russian River Brewing Company.

^ And with good reason. The ride had become a gigantic pile of wasted track. RMC got rid of all of that, thank God.

No; it became a disfigured oval of track. Two identical (very close to, in reality) sides you must bear through twice

I'd love to hear your opinion AFTER you ride the Fricken coaster!! Hahaha

A) I'm pretty sure I don't need to ride it to understand the layout. B) I never said anything about the ride experience - which I wouldn't bash until I experienced it myself.

C) I can't afford a flight out there lol. At least I've been before!

So lets stop this before this goes into flames in the wrong thread anyway.

I'm likely going to SF:DK on sunday to process me and my friends 2016 passes.

sunday 11th and 18th of october is those two Cheer Jams cheer and dance competion/exhibition days. hundred's of of girls who seem to get their whole family to come to the park to watch them + the general public who had no idea it was going on.

I'll be there this Sunday as well, for the same purpose. I hope the crowds are decent, as it's supposed to be sunny and 80. Still, better than Jamz. That really is an awful time to go to the park.

No, it became a better ride with less wasted, boring track. That is an absolute joy to experience twice. Try it sometime, you'll see.

Pretty sure me and my friend will do the haunts/mazes (whatever we're calling them.) I'll likely have us check out medusa artound 4 pm and see if the crowds are non-existent there at that time like in the regular season.

update: yep. not going today since my friends car isn't running. He can only go on sunday's too so its either the 25th or well the 25th since 2016 passes need to be registered by nov 1st for the gold upgrade.
