robbalvey
Hey everybody! This thread is simple! Rather than having a million little threads about everything that goes on at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, this thread is designed to consolidate it all into one user-friendly thread. Feel free to use it to post updates, trip reports, questions, comments, and of course, general discussion. For pictures and videos of the park as well as past updates, see TPR's Park Index Page. DENINA, Times-Herald staff writer A theme park operator may be returning to the bargaining table to buy Six Flags Marine World, only months after saying it might need five more years to close the deal. The Vallejo City Council plans to meet behind closed doors Tuesday to discuss the price and payment terms for the city-owned theme park to Six Flags, Inc. The Oklahoma City-based company runs the park, sharing its profits with the city, and has an option to buy the property. In December, the city extended Six Flag's contract, giving the company until 2010 to buy Marine World. "We still maintain that vision that we're pursuing the opportunity to purchase the park," park spokesperson Paul Garcia said earlier this week. "We'll continue to work with the city on moving forward with that." Garcia couldn't confirm if the park was actively negotiating to buy the park. Six Flags corporate officials were unavailable for comment Friday. City officials apparently are readying for a potential sale. On March 7, the Planning Commission is expected to vote on updating paperwork for an eventual sale. The park could fetch about $52 million, which is how much the city owes for the property. Vallejo borrowed money to save the ailing park from closure about a decade ago. Six Flags has since invested millions in the park, building roller coasters, acquiring more animals and adding new shows. The city now pulls in roughly $2 million a year as its share of profits. If Six Flags takes ownership, the city instead would take a cut of ticket sales of as much as $750,000 a year. City officials declined to comment on the potential sale, saying the matter is confidential because it involves real estate negotiations. "It's a work in progress," City Manager Roger Kemp said. Last summer, Six Flags officials delayed their option to buy the park, citing financial issues and uncertainty over a proposed renewal of the neighboring Solano County Fairgrounds. A developer is pitching a year-round attraction including shops and restaurants. In a July letter to the council, chairman and chief executive Kieran Burke said the fairgrounds project could leave little overflow parking for Marine World visitors and cut into parking revenue. He also noted financial issues. "Although we are having a good year at Six Flags Marine World, our performance in other markets has been inconsistent," Burke wrote. What Now
I thought the city wanted Six Flags to buy SFMW, not the other way around. :?
Angry_Gumball
Now, if SFMW was no longer owned by the city, but by Six Flags, would they lose their invisable 150 foot "ceiling"?
Jeezus Juice
So they have to give the city a cut of the gate. So THAT'S why they practically give it away every year with cheap passes and admission discounts, BAF ect. Hopefully that will end the debate for now. Why oh why can't this park just build a damn LOG FLUME. Isn't there one just sitting in a field in Indiana or something? ::bitter:: -JJ
Angry_Gumball
A log flume, or even a ride like Arrow Head Splashdown would be a really good addition to the park being as those summer days can get quite hot. SFMW would then have a nice collection of water rides and be equal w/ PGA as far as water rides go (excluding Boom Bay)...Better yet, they should add a water coaster. Angry_Gumball
Parking garage key in Six Flags saleBy Chris G. Denina/Times-Herald, Vallejo Vallejo may have a buyer for Six Flags Marine World if the city promises to commit as much as $7 million for a new public parking garage. Six Flags Inc. was close to buying the city-owned theme park last year, but backed out, citing concerns about lost parking if the nearby Solano County Fairgrounds is redeveloped. The parties said it's too early for details on a parking structure, only that 2,450 spaces are needed. The Vallejo City Council plans to vote today on a new deal with the Oklahoma City-based theme park operator. Under the new terms, Six Flags would get five more years to decide whether it wants to buy the park for an estimated $52 million. The deal also needs the OK of the Marine World Joint Powers Authority and Vallejo Redevelopment Agency. The council doubles as the board of directors of each group. "We fully intend to exercise our option to purchase the park within that period of time," said park spokesman Paul Garcia. Under the current arrangement, Six Flags runs the park, sharing its profits with the city. If the company buys Marine World, the city instead would charge a park operation fee. Well, what are your thoughts?

shepp
Make sure to burn it down while you are there .. thanks Um, a member of PETA? While SFMW is certainly not a great park - it could use more decent coasters, and the ride ops tend to be lackadaisical - I find it to be a perfectly nice place. Fairly well-maintained, clean, and friendly. And they've done a good job of integrating the beasties they got from SFWOA, even redoing a whole section of the park. Still, perhaps you object to animals in captivity, in which case I can see why you might think of arson as a moral imperative...

shepp
^ I've said before that there seems to be a difference between the ride ops, who seem more interested in their cellphones than dispatch times, and the employes who deal with the animal attractions. The walrus keepers, staff at the butterfly house, tiger trainers, and the women who run the bird show have, when I've shown any interest whatever, all been what I'd describe as "friendly and helpful." However, I guess it depends on what you put out...
coaster1
No PETA here .. I like my meat and my leather belt .. I just hate that park. My last visit was horrible, I mean, NASCAR SpeedPark was better .... and that's PATHETIC!
Tmcdllr
I read on Thrillnetwork.com that there are markers all around Zonga and the east side of the park. They wouldn't be replacing it would they? Can someone confirm these markers? http://thrillnetwork.com/boards/showthread.php?t=35956
MagnumForce
Go Ahead Six Flags, keep throwing rides and money into your parks, that will really help your situation when you don't even have money to run rides at full capacity or even operate them at all. robbalvey
I couldn't easily find the information about SFMW. Can you post a direct link or quote the thread? Thanks. --Robb
Tmcdllr
According to EastCoastin07 in a post under the topic 2006 SFMM Coaster, on Thrillnetwork.com, "As crazy as it sounds, there are tons of markers scattered on the east side of Six Flags Marine World...Some staff for the website I work on were at the park one day and supposedly saw one of the memebers of B&M inspecting the Zonga area...This leads to the rumor that Zonga will be removed at the end of the season. I know it's still a rumor, but there are markers and where theres markers theres footers. These things are scattered all over the place on the one side of the park so it wouldn't make sense to say it was a flat ride or buildings for that matter, because a lot of them are in the middle of pathways." They are talking about the SFMM coaster for 2006 but it is clearly stated that there appear to be markers at SFMW.

SLUSHIE
If a "member" of B&M were seen walking around... it would be looking at the area before design, not after. If SFMW is getting a new B&M, it won't be for a while.
