Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

p. 778: Rapterra takes flight!

You know, I wonder if I305 should have been built by B&M. With Fury 325 they proved that hey can build a ride just as intense as an Intamin, but also way more reliable and way more comfortable.

No, Their Gigas will always be too far spread out element wise and not able to handle such quick transitions at such high speeds. The thrill factor will never match up I believe. We shall see though. For now, Ill stick with my baby lol

I have never heard someone who has ridden Fury say something like this. How many times did you ride it? Which seats?

Planning on making a road trip down from NYC this weekend with my buddy. Hopefully the weather cooperates. Never been to KD before but when I heard Shockwave was coming down I knew I couldn't miss out on it. One of my fondest memories from my younger years is the TOGO Ultra Twister that was at Great Adventure, and I owe it to myself to check out one of the few remaining TOGOs still around.

I see most of the other questions I had have already been answered regarding whether or not the Fast Lane is worth it and suggested ride order -- thanks for all that everyone. We're planning on leaving from NYC in the middle of the night (most likely between 4 & 5 AM), so I don't know how bad the lines will be at the time we get there. If there is rain, do most of the coasters usually get stopped or is it on a case-by-case basis?

I'm sure in the future we will see some major things happening at kings dominion... There is no reason it can't pull in big numbers and get big returns from major investments... I think the company saw that possibilities in other parks like Carowinds and Canada's Wonderland. Time will tell!

I hope your experience is better than mine. I had very fond memories of its sister at Kings Island. Those memories are all now ruined because of how much i hated my ride on Shockwave last month.

It's a Maverick and El Toro on Steroids so you figure it out. To each their own. I'm a speed demon so that's why its the best coaster for me. The rush is for me. Its not for everyone, and i dont care for anyone but me

GateKeeper has more airtime than I305 does (inb4 rage). The first drop provided some, but it was very lackluster the rest of the ride. I was expecting something out of those hills, all I got was Raging Bull syndrome.

I personally find Maverick a much more enjoyable ride experience than I305. I305 was nothing but left-to-fight turns with some speed, I don't find it that interesting. Intense? Yes. But nothing spectacular beyond that. The hype, at least to me, is bizarre to say the least.

To each their own.

I305 is a top 10 ride for me. Those lateral transitions are awesome and the only other coaster I've ever ridden that has transitions like that is Maverick. Personally, I actually think Mavericks transitions are quicker and more intense, but I305's are still awesome and besides Maverick, nothing I've ridden comes close to doing what I305 does.

I prefer Millennium Force and Fury 325 to I305 but like I said, I305 is a still a top 10 ride for me and it blows the other gigas away in the intensity department.

I think its safe to say that B&M can't build coasters anywhere near as intense as Intamins, especially the more recent IntaRide style coasters; those are some of the most intense coasters on the planet, unmatched except by Maverick and the Pre Fabs. While Fury 325 is pretty intense, it's not in the same stratosphere as coasters like I305 and Skyrush. Their restraints are more comfortable and they do have more reliability. If I305 had more airtime it would be perfect, but it doesn't really deliver in that category. (That's where Skyrush excels). I think Intamin maximised the potential of that area, building an amazing coaster in a compact space. B&M simply couldn't fit a long out and back layout in there, and we don't know how good a B&M twister-layout giga would be.

Careful, I don't think it's that they can't, I think it's that they won't... Totally different...

I'm sure if B&M wanted to build a super extreme ride, mthey could... But they choose to build rides that the GP want to ride over and over again... As much as I love intimidator and skyrush, I can only handle them so many times, while a ride like nitro or fury over and over ago!

Typically the coasters run in the rain unless its an absolute heavy downpour or lightning in the area. If you get the chance to ride Intimidator 305 in the rain, it's a painful joy. Have a good trip!

^My friend (also an enthusiast) went on I305 in the rain once and he said it's the only time in his life he legit thought he was going to die because he barely ever got a chance to breathe during the ride . The rain and wind just take your breath away literally

It's pretty simple. Most of us get very excited at the news of a new Intamin coaster being built but not so much when we hear of a new B&M being built.....

Speak for yourself, my friend! I am much more excited (typically) when a fun, reliable, B&M coaster is announced, as opposed to an intense, fun, but frequently broken down Intamin is announced (not that many people are going with Intamin these days - which should tell you something). Doesn't mean I don't like Intamins. Two of my top 3 coasters are Intamin (MF, Maverick), though an intense B&M, Fury, just surpassed both of them. Fury (and Thunderbird) is proof that B&M can make intense coasters, and as others have said, it's more a matter of what kind of coasters parks want B&M to build, rather than whether they can.

(FWIW, RMC is the coaster manufacturer that gets my blood going the most upon announcement these days! )

For me personally i would rather deal with a ride that breaks down more frequently in exchange for a more intense unique ride. Parks don't look at it that way but i do.

I rode I305 6 times in a few hours. I have been to Cedar Point 100 times or so in 13 years and I have been on their Intamins many many times. even more than their B&M's. You're welcome to think what you want but i'll continue to enjoy the Intamins.

I feel i also should note that dominator was broke down more than I305 when i was there.

I think basically everyone prefers Cedar Point's Intamin coasters to their B&M's, but all 3 B&M's (especially Raptor) are amazing rides too. They compliment eachother very well.
