Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

p. 777: Winterfest starts on November 29!

Speaking of BGW's rides, you could fit TWO, if not THREE Tempesto's in Shockwave's spot. As well as the four coasters I mentioned a few pages back. And as to why would you put in a small coaster with bigger ones in the park ....

Tempesto/Superman UF 230' x 60'

Shockwave 483' x 100' (widest)

Fahrenheit 548' x 105' (mostly narrower)

SLC 430' x 130' (best I can remember from last night)

Boardwalk Bullet 330' x 250' (ditto)

Measured in Google Maps, approx. and may not include supports.

#SaveShockwave

Okay, Thunder Road at least has some local historical element to it, but Shockwave was manufactured by TOGO which makes any and all possible historical importance null and void.

Maybe it'll get relocated to Holy Land USA, then we'll REALLY have "Mount Golgotha Express"

You know now that I think of it, an invert would be the best option if a small amount of land is available. You can fit a good amount of track in a compact space, not to mention it would feel very intense. Just look at Great Bear, Afterburn, or Talon.

Here's a sample of the specs:

120 ft tall

60 MPH

4 inversions (loop, dive loop, zero g-roll, inline twist)

2,800-3,000 feet of track

Why would they add another invert with Volcano already? I'm sure it will be something unique to the rest of the parks collection

Cedar Point, SFGA, Dorney Park, SFDK, Kings Island, La Ronde, SFNE all have more than one invert. Also, Volcano is about the launch and then the rest of the ride is pretty tame. B&M Inverts are all about intensity for the whole ride. Finally, you can fit a great invert in a small amount of space.

tbh anything could happen right now. I strongly think we'll be getting a giant Frisbee flat and then 2017 will be the big year for us. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm just curious. . . But what makes you think a giant frisbee flat ride is coming to KD??

Huss is on its death bed, I would bet we wont see anything from Huss

B&M Inverts are all about intensity for the whole ride.

Were. Past Tense. When I think of intense B&M inverts, I think of Montu, Alpengeist, Raptor, and the BTRs. Nothing after 2003 that I've been on has topped any of those for me. Banshee isn't bad, but it's definitely not on the same intensity level as the 90s era inverts.

Anyhow, I really REALLY would be shocked to see a large coaster go in this spot. I'm not saying it won't, because we're all just guessing, but all the people thinking they will take out a coaster AND a kiddie ride AND a family ride to build a coaster are probably smoking something they shouldn't. KD has lots of nice coasters. They have an average collection of kiddie rides and family rides, and almost no thrilling flat rides. Not only would it be a poor business decision to take out 3 rides to replace 1, but it would be bad to take out 3 rides from different parts of the spectrum to replace with 1 ride that fits the category they already are pretty solid in.

I know to a lot of enthusiasts a "dream park" is nothing but coasters, but not to the GP.

Of course, they don't need to take out the car ride to put a coaster there. Look at how awesome the Phoenix interacts with the antique cars!

I think smart money says flat rides, and possible chance of a smaller size coaster. I would be shocked to see anything other than Shockwave coming out of the park this year, unless they place to relocate it elsewhere within the park (which I highly doubt for Blue Ridge Tollway).

I've ridden Banshee. It is just as intense as the old school inverts, except smoother. And it's pretty much guaranteed that KD is getting some type of good coaster in the near future. At least the Flying Ace could be taken out with the already three swing rides the park has.

I love Banshee but I disagree with the notion that it's as intense or smoother than the older models. It can't compare to something like Afterburn, Montu or Batman and those rides are all butter smooth also.

I'd still love to see an invert though as I do enjoy Banshee quite a bit.

^^ I've also ridden Banshee, and I think it's a great ride, but does NOT pin you to the seat the way BTR does in the vertical loops. It does NOT sling through any of it's elements with the force that the cobra rolls on Alpengeist and Raptor, or the batwing on Montu does. I would compare it more to gatekeeper or X-flight than to any of the 90s inverts. It's not a bad ride, it's not a boring ride, but it's certainly a new B&M, not a throwback to the 90s. The only ride they've built recently that could come close is Thunderhawk, and that's not an invert.

Also, as others have said, you can't say taking out Aerial Chase is ok because they have Wind Seekers and a Wave Swinger. Aerial Chase is a kiddie ride. The other two are adult rides. Plus, A LOT of people don't like getting in Wind Seeker. I'm not saying they WON'T be taking it out to make room for a coaster, because neither of us know. I'm just saying it would be a poor business decision.

There's also nothing promising a new coaster to KD. It'd be nice, and we'd all like it, but they have 14 roller coasters already (well, 13 once Shockwave goes). They have a great woodie, plus a wooden racer, and a total crap woodie. They have three launch coasters, a bobsled, a SUPER intense giga, an old Arrow, a solid B&M floorless, two kiddie coasters, and a wild mouse. It sure would be nice for them to get something new, but they aren't "hurting" for it the way some other parks are. Meanwhile their flat ride collection barely exists, and their family ride section is also pretty lame.

What flat ride could they get? All of the options have reliability issues, and as you know, Cedar Fair wants to avoid anything with reliability issues. Also, their family section is fine.

^ Pretty much everything everyone else has already said over the last few pages is a solid on-the-table possibility. I just hope they don't get a "we want more money" slingshot ride in it's footprint. Outside of that, as long as the new ride is free, I think whatever they go with will fit the park well (even a non ride, like a new dining area as was proposed a few pages back could do well there).

It very well could be a coaster, but I think I agree with the people saying the new coaster will be in 2017, and likely somewhere else in the park.

If Kings Dominion was owned by Six Flags, we'd be getting:

2016: Larson loop that counts as our "new coaster"

2017: Nothing

2018: One new slide

2019: New restaurant

2020: Nothing

2021: Vekoma boomerang to replace Hurler

2022: Re-paint of Dominator

Is SFFT just different from other Six Flags parks? We've gotten very major additions every year since 2013.

Anyway, I think KD does need some improvement on the kiddie areas just based off of what they have already.

I couldn't disagree more... In 2013 Kings Dominion spent 8-9 million renovating and adding to their kids area with 8 new rides. It is one of the nicest Planet Snoopys in the chain now.

With the park not getting a thrill ride since Windseeker in 2012 (Intimidator 305 in 2010 if you want to call Windseeker a family ride) and losing a thrill ride now I'm almost certain this will be a family/thrill ride(s) replacement and nothing as far as kiddie rides go.

Also, if the rumors hold true expect a SlingShot somewhere in the park next season.

I agree. It's not like Six Flags Magic Mountain where every year it's a new coaster.

I was looking at a Google Maps aerial of the Shockwave site and then looked at an aerial of SFGAm's X Flight. With a little tweaking of the layout I think it could fit even if it had to cross over the path from the Eiffel Tower towards Blue Ridge Tollway. You would have to relocate Flying Ace, Bad Apple and remove the stadium to make it work though. The only thing is that CF usually goes relatively big with their coaster additions so that wouldn't work.
