The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

How have I missed 124 pages of this awesome goodness! I've just spent the last 5 days reading this thread completely. 25 a day. And can I just say, I am dying to get back on board a RCCL. Between getting their travel planner in the mail, and the posibility of unlimited daily drink packages! A TPR cruise needs to happen. Does anyone know if you can purchase it by the day, or do you do a blanket for the entire trip. Cause I generally like to take a day off between drunk days.

^There are very strict rules for it. You have to purchase the package for the amount of days of the cruise. No piecing it out. Also, everyone in your stateroom over 21 must also purchase it if you do. Should make for some fun fake rooming situations on the TPR Cruise!

^^Both the original statement and then them retracting it are posted on the previous page of this thread, I do find it interesting that they changed their stance barely 2 hours later. Seems to me that somebody in PR made a really uninformed decision and somebody more important had to fix things FAST!

I think they cleaned up well though, offering a full refund in case they offended anybody is a good gesture.

FYI - Just got off the Monarch of the Seas to do a 'Klassy Kruise Komparison'...wait a minute...maybe that's a bad combination of letters!!!

It was awesome. Really made us realize even more how pathetic Carnival is. We specifically chose what should have been a TERRIBLE cruise to try and give Carnival a fair shot. This Royal Caribbean cruise was shorter, cheaper, same size boat, same departure point, just as old, etc. It was an amazing cruise. Service, Food, Activities. Ugh, just so pathetic about Carnival!!!!

Robb will most more updates soon!

^Not surprised at all by this. Carnival just offers one of the worst products on Earth. Much like how people try to convince themselves that they're enjoying "fine dining" when eating at Chili's, people try to convince themselves that they're experiencing a quality cruise when on Carnival. They are wrong.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a noob cruiser question.

Grandma got a free cruise through the Horseshoe casino here in southern Indiana on a Norweign cruise. It's complimentary (she's a diamond memeber and gets compted (?) things all the time). The cruise is free but the airfare is not (however she could get a $500 airfare credit if she's lucky) and all she has to do is get online and pick a base cruise.

My question is; Would it really be worth it for her to do? She wants to go but doesn't want to go without anyone and grandpas not up to it. I could go as I'm 21 and all but would have to take off work. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks, Joel.

^How long is the cruise? Is it a free 3 day? 7 day? Out of Florida?

I can't see ever turning down an almost free cruise. And this isn't some sort of scam? There are tons of 'contests' and 'promotions' that give you a free cruise, but it's really not.

I find it amusing that for a bunch of folks who have such intense issues with the "general theme park public" they sure seem to love to be trapped on a boat with dorky strangers for 7 days.

I'd rather have my testes strapped to the OTR on a Vekoma SLC for 20 cycles than to sit on a cruise ship and talk to boring morons from Topeka.

But different strokes, I guess....

^Just because there are other people on a cruise ship doesn't mean you have to interact with them. On the three cruises I've done, I've had almost zero contact with anyone outside of our group. Really it's no different than going to a park full of people, just because they're all waiting in line for a coaster doesn't mean you have to talk to them.

I'm at the point where I'd almost rather go on a cruise than go to a park, if given the choice. They're both fun experiences, but I do find cruises a bit more relaxing. And certainly the food is usually better!

Fair enough. I guess the whole food thing is an attraction for lots of folks.

I guess I'm just not obsessed with food (not meant as a put-down in any way) to take that into consideration.

If I'm taking a week off work, I can't see being trapped on a ship with a bunch of strangers with nothing to do but swim, eat, and drink. I need a little more "bang" for my buck.

It would seem that theme park folks would think along those same lines, considering my friends wouldn't take a theme park vacation in a million years, but they will spend 3000 dollars to go to San Francisco and see no sights other than restaurants and bars that they saw on the Food Network and Travel Channel.

And now that I have kids, I want to provide them with experiences that I wanted as a kid. Namely, Disney World and Busch Gardens. Not the Titanic.

Oh well. As I said, it takes diff'rent strokes to move the world...

I used to think the same way about cruises until I went on one. I really thought it would be exactly as you described, but it was so much fun! While they aren't theme parks, there are a ton of activities to keep you having fun, or you can just skip them and just eat and sleep. Some places do have awesome things that you can't really find any theme park, like the massive zip line in Haiti, mountain coasters, and walking up a waterfall! I have never felt trapped, except on the terrible Carnival Cruise , and even found new things to do after 6 days on the ship. It's also really nice because every day you wake up in a new place. You don't have to drive from place to place, you just wake up and your in a new country or city. I honestly can't think of anyone that went on a decent cruise (not carnival) and didn't want to do it again. I'm sure there are people like that, buy I've honestly never met one!

That's just it. We don't know. She would have to go to the Horseshoe (Owned by Harras) and talk to the Norwegian people. I know that they have flown her to other casinos that Harras owns so I guess it's legit...

Oh and it's any of them. The thing she got in the mail from them says something alone the lines of the Bahamas, Mexico, Europe, Alaska, and Hawaii (I think)... That's what I'm most worried about. It says all that and 7 days but again she would have to go and talk to them about it first.

It's legit, anyone from Total Rewards (Harrah's and other casinos) that gets to Seven Stars level gets 1 free cruise a year. Seven Stars is the highest level you can get to and you have to earn 100,000 tier credits a year, and besides the free cruise there are a lot of other comps/perks.
