Work is expected to begin this year on a 100-acre Michael Jackson entertainment complex that would include a museum, performing arts center, hotel, golf course and theme park inspired by the pop singer’s Neverland Ranch.

“Everything is in the planning stages at this point, but we’re moving on a fast track and we’re looking forward to actually breaking ground sometime in 2010,” said Odie Anderson, president of the Jackson family project in the pop singer’s hometown of Gary, Ind.

Anderson said the theme park would include rides found at Jackson’s 2,700-acre Neverland Ranch near Los Olivos in Santa Barbara County.

In addition to a zoo, aviary and nature preserve, the Neverland theme park included a carousel, Ferris wheel, bumper cars, passenger train and classic carnival rides such as the Zipper, Sea Dragon and Octopus.

A roller coaster with a “Thriller” theme would be part of the planned theme park, the Daily Mirror reported.

The $1-billion project would be built over a 10-year period, starting with the museum, art center and hotel before breaking ground on the golf course and theme park.

I think the Neverland Ranch site is a slam dunk for a successful tourist attraction. Everyone wants to see what kind of freaky stuff is in there.

But to invest this kind of capital into one of America's worst cities. Well, let's just say I'll be surprised if this project ever gets into the late phases.

^ Na, that is too good of an idea for them to do.

Seriously, why not just add on to Freestyle, they are in need of something to keep them running, and it is a theme park for music.

hmmm... I don't really know what to make of this sounds like a good choice of location until you ask yourself if there is anywhere better to place a theme park....and that would be almost anywhere.

I know nothing about the area but having done a search on Google for driving directions from Chicago puts Gary at about 30 miles.

Not too bad of a distance from a major metropolitan area.

I know it wasn't clear in the attached article. The goal is to build the complex in stages:

Phase 1: Museum/Art Center

Phase 2: Hotel

Phase 3: Golf Course

Phase 4: Theme Park (that is 10 years down the road).

Just in time for KidTums Sweet Sixteen Bash

So you all have plenty of time to speculate!

Wow, almost 2 whole pages and no one has thrown out the "The Thriller coaster is obviously going to be a kiddie coaster" line.

Seriously though, who in their right mind would even think of developing something like this in Gary? This can't be happening.

Agreed - it will never happen!

Does this mean there finally IS more than corn there?

Theres no corn in Gary dude, just a bunch of burnt down and foreclosed buildings, pawn shops, tagged signs/buildings, and a few traces of what used to be steel mills.

Okayyy: Lets do the Pros & Cons:

Pros:

Part of the Chicago Metro Area

On Lake Michigan

Major Brand Associated with it (Might be more appealing to certin demographics)

Cons:

A Michael Jackson Theme Park 11 years after his death

Its in a slum town, smack dab in the Rust Belt

Too far away from Downtown Chicago

Economy

At least the park could buy Son Of Beast, move it and call it "The Joe Jackson Experience"

Sorry about the bad taste...
