ECZenith
Howdy partners... Well I've been hearing this rumor all over the mountain for the last few weeks now but now that I see domain names are being purchased I guess this project is gaining some momentum. It seems that Disney is planning on making a "Big Thunder Mountain" movie in the way that they have made movies based on Pirates of the Carribean and Haunted Mansion. No word yet on a release date or who might be in it, but this Jim Jill Media article explains it a bit, as well as some information on the next "National Treasure" movies. http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2008/02/01/national-treasure-3-4-big-thunder-mountain-the-movie.aspx Please be true... Yeehaw! I could see the backstory of BTMRR becoming a great movie
Koolkid
Wow that would be fantastic. By the way, what exactly is the backstory to Big Thunder Mountain?
devol4
Hahaha oh mannn That'd be sickkk! Wonder what the full backstory is though as well?
the ghost
I have a bad feeling that if there is a movie for Big Thunder Mountain that the dinosaur will be part of it. That seems to be the rides unofficial icon because you can see it from the line. Also,I am pretty sure BTM is about an abandoned mining company in the mountains. I mean, first lift is like the early oh crap there's bats, then there are the random animals that I always took for being in the middle of nowhere. The next hill has the old mine parts(and conveniently in the shape of a hidden mickey) as well as the goat which is like old mining stuff. Also, the third lift I always took as going into the old dangerous mine with the rocks.
coasterfan21
I'm interested to see how they are going to pull this off. I mean sure Pirates, and the Haunted Mansion they could easily make into a story. Big Thunder Mountain on the other hand looks like more of a challenge to me because it is a roller coaster. I cant wait to see how this comes out because I can see a lot of potential for this.
Team Thriller
I could see it being about a run-away train that cannot stop and they have to find a way to. Kind of like a family version of Speed. Or maybe it's all about the goat? --James
ebl
They should make this movie. It'd be a smash hit! Eric
Homer
On another note, whatever happened to that Jungle Cruise movie?
Electerik
On another note, whatever happened to that Jungle Cruise movie? It came out 58 years ago. I guess you missed it. /The African Queen was allegedly the inspiration for Jungle Cruise.
J man
^The African Queen was not even a Disney movie though. I don't think they should be doing any more of these ride movies. Out of the last 3 that they did, the only one that was any good was Pirates of the Caribbean. And it had hardly anything to do with the ride at all! With a 1 out of 3 track record so far I'm not so sure if they should keep doing this.
Team Thriller
^ I don't know. You could say the same thing about the James Bond series and Batman series. Some are bad, some might be good. This might be a good move. Who knows? --James
ECZenith
From what I understand the movie would focus more on the story of Rainbow Ridge and Big Thunder Mesa itself rather than the railroad/roller coaster. I'm not saying don't expect to see a mine train but I'm thinking the story will be more about the cursed mines being rediscovered. Also, I doubt the dinosaur skeleton will play into the story but I would be very surpised if the dynamite chewing goat (Billy) wasn't in the film. This will definately be interesting to watch develop.
thrillerman1
Hopefully it's based on the BTR in Paris!
Lenaapple1974
Nice article! Thanks for sharing that! I would love to see the combining of films actually. Even if they do not physically combine movies, Cage could go and look for the fountain, but find something left there by Sparrow or Bilbosa, a clue of sorts, etc, leading him to the actual fountain. Something like that could work better than bringing the characters actually together. I am a fan of both series. I am also a fan of Cage in these types of films. Good to hear they will keep going with a few more movies! There are so many ideas they can use for them. And BTMR, my most favorite ride in Disney... a movie would be awesome! I think this one would do good. How many people actually know the story? I do not. I remember hearing it once, but my mind is so busy lately, certain things had to go! lol. TheRapidsNerd
Dunno how I feel about this one. PotC and HM were fun movies, but it felt wierd that the original rides the movies were based on, were re-done to match said movies. A BTM movie could very well be good, but I just like the simple charm of the classic Disney rides and their original backstories. Now a Dole Whip movie, would be fantastic. It's a short movie, but tasteful.
speedracer
By the way, what exactly is the backstory to Big Thunder Mountain? From wikipedia Though the details of the backstory vary from park to park, all follow the same general story arcs. Some time in the late 1800s, gold was discovered on Big Thunder Mountain in the American southwest. Overnight, the small mining town of Tumbleweed (Thunder Mesa at Disneyland Paris) was established and the Tumbleweed Mining Company staked their claim. Mining was prosperous and an extensive line of mine trains were set up to transport the ore. Unbeknownst to the settlers, the Mountain was a sacred spot to local Native Americans and was cursed.[1] Before long, the settlers' desecration of the mountain caused a great tragedy, (terrible earthquake or flash flood, depending on the park) which befell the mines and town and they were abandoned. Some time later, the locomotives were found to be racing around the mountain on their own, without engineers or a crew. The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was founded in the old mining camp to allow tourists to take rides on the possessed trains. I don't think they should be doing any more of these ride movies. Out of the last 3 that they did, the only one that was any good was Pirates of the Caribbean. And it had hardly anything to do with the ride at all! With a 1 out of 3 track record so far I'm not so sure if they should keep doing this. My exact feelings too. And it's actually been 4 movies now (easy to forget the craptacular TOT movie!), makes the odds even worse for another dud.
SKULLY
Could a Space Mountain movie be that far off?
CorkscrewFoley
I had the impression there would be a Space Mountain film done before BTM...
BeemerBoy
^^ Hopefully very far off.....like never. I'm not gonna say this idea sucks, and wouldn't produce a good, entertaining movie, but.... Wait, of course I am. This idea sucks. Here's a radical outside the box idea. Just put the money towards a new, creative E-ticket. Done.
CorkscrewFoley
^Agreed...or at least get WDW Monorail the Movie.
BeemerBoy
Honestly, if there was any Disney coaster suited for a movie, wouldn't be Everest anyway (not that I'm encouraging that, of course)? Sometimes the creative department baffles me.
CorkscrewFoley
What have Disney seriously tapped right out? I mean, I love the parks, but I hate how they rip something right off, and turn it around so much to make it look like it was their own. How about a National Treasure ride instead of a BTM film? jarmor
Nah, Disney should make a movie based on the dinosaur ride at animal kingdom!
CoasterLover
Nah, Disney should make a movie based on the dinosaur ride at animal kingdom! Lol... (that was a joke right?) Let's not forget the track record Disney has had with movies based off of rides... Pirates Trilogy: $1,038,150,155 (Domestic) (ya, that's good) The Haunted Mansion: $75,847,266 (Domestic) (38th best movie of 2003!) The Country Bears: $16,990,825 (Domestic) (lest we forget) All I can say is I hope it fairs more like Pirates and less like the Country Bears! Jim1013
BTMR is known worldwide (Japan, CA, FL, Paris) and that makes it much more marketable than Expedition Everest. I remember reading about PAC before it was released and thinking it would bomb like the Country Bears, but the rest is history.
