Movies, Movies, Movies.....

We just saw "Into The Woods," yesterday.

Surprised it didn't get at least a Best Picture nom today,

besides what it did get (Go Meryl!).

And having seen the original on Broadway back in 1988, I was really

surprised how well they stuck to a lot of the piece, and the

amazing editing (also a snub) to put it all together. And the deaths

were still handled "offstage" as it was, back then.

I didn't think the dark last part, was as un-liked by me as a lot of previous

posters, have said. But that's Sondheim. And Fairy Tales. Original Fairy Tales.

And considering a lot of these tales have been grossly "vanilla-ed"

up, for a less ready-to-handle-it crowd of kids --- whoever that was.

I did agree, that Rapunzel suddenly bolting out of the "After" scene and out of the

movie was kind of a wtf. The reprise of "Agony" would have been nice, too but

that takes an adult twist the kids might have to be explained to. Or not.

All in all, the soundtrack was gorgeous! Streep can sing nice and tender, Blunt

and Kendrick were a great surprise, the Princes were the best of the guys,

and it really really looked like to me, like an onstage production how long shots took in

woods paths weaving in different directions, I liked seeing that, from time to time.

So 8.5 out of 10 for me. And I plan to get the dvd of it, too..

The Lego Movie is completely shut out by the Oscars as a Best Animated Feature category.

What a total screw-job!

I was thinking The Lego Movie was gonna win the whole thing, and it didn't even get a nom. Yet the Boxtrolls got a nomination.

I didn't see Box Trolls, but I haven't read or heard any favorable reviews of it. "Everything Is Awesome" is up for Best Song, though.

^^I personally do think they made the right choice with How to Train Your Dragon 2 during the Golden Globes.I do find it extremely depressing that Lego Movie didn't get nominated and The Boxtrolls did (Haven't seen it, though, but haven't heard the best things), but what does get me happy is that The Tale of Princess Kaguya was nominated, and I've heard it is a phenomenal animated movie (seeing foreign films nominated is also always cool).

So I finally saw Big Hero 6 the other day and I really liked it! Disney/Pixar are so much better at doing emotional scenes. I'm not sure how they did it but I ended up empathising with a robot who only has eyes and body language to convey everything. I didn't know anything about the base material but I thought the story was great, another awesome instalment from WDAS, they're on a roll!

Tried to watch A Million Ways to Die in the West and couldn't even finish it. One of the worst comedies I've seen in a long time. Seth MacFarlane should probably just stick to writing and directing animated shows. His character just came off as lame, annoying, and boring. Overall, I did chuckle a couple of times, but comedies should have you laughing at more than 1/5 of the jokes. D

Predestination:

One of the most original movies I have seen, a mind bending sci fi flick that in years to come will be looked back as being ground breaking ( same way Blade Runner is now )

I believe it has just opened state side.

Sarah Snook gives one of last years best performances, it starts off really talky, hang in cause the story is one hell of a good one.

^Haven't seen it yet, but I did catch The Imitation Game, which was very good. Although the excessive Cumberbatch fandom can be a bit annoying, he is a talented actor and was perfect in this movie.

Just as a movie, I thought it was really good, but it falls very much into the historical fiction genre. The biography by Andrew Hodges was a little dry for a straight-up film adaptation, but at least it was historically accurate.

It was especially weird that the movie started off sort of almost touching on the subject of Turing's relationship with Arnold Murray, but then quickly abandoned those events to focus on some fictitious and overly-dramatized "Soviet spy" tangent instead. WTF was that about?

Also, at some points I started to wonder if this was supposed to be about Alan Turing, or re-telling of "A Beautiful Mind" with a bit of "Sherlock" mixed in as fan service to the Cumberbitches. lol

  • 2 weeks later...

So it was just released that not only are they planning to do another three Star Wars films,

with the first one (7th? 8th?) opening this year. This, and the other two in this series,

PLUS two stand alone films (one of which opens next year), makes it now 'possible' that

from now until 2019, there will be a Star Wars film released every year...

^ So let's see if I understand this. This means no Amazing Spider-man 3 and a completely new one in 2017 (new actor new story) that will be part of MCU. Which means it will fall in the same street as Iron man (2008) and the others in the Avengers movie line. But we won't see other avengers in Spider-man movies, but could we still expect Peter Parker in a movie in the avengers line? I'm kind off lost on that part.

So looks like the amazing spiderman series is dead and spidey is getting another reboot, but this time he'll be part of the MCU. It looks like the new movie is taking Thor 3's spot: http://marvel.com/news/movies/24062/sony_pictures_entertainment_brings_marvel_studios_into_the_amazing_world_of_spider-man

The funniest thing is that Andrew Garfield's Twitter has a link to a petition for Sony to team up with Marvel, which was posted about a month or two ago. I bet he didn't know that the collaboration would result in him being replaced.

In my opinion, it's a dumb choice to replace Spiderman yet again. This isn't James Bond, we don't need a new actor every five years.

Suprised you guys aren't raving about American Sniper.

Everyone seemed to love it, but it honestly wasn't my cup of tea.

It was good, but not amazing. I'd rate it an 7.5-8 out of ten.

Maybe I'm not 'Old enough' to appreciate it.

It's still on my list, I've heard some negative stuff about it idolising war etc. but the consensus seems to be that it's a powerful film so it'll be an interesting watch.

I've seen American Sniper, and yes, it is good.

Of course, I'm a dirty liberal (wink wink) and I don't like how they completely ignored the fact that the U.S. was the invading force and the Iraqis were just reacting to being invaded.

But either way, its a good film. And worthy of discussion.

But yeah, its nowhere near Best Picture-worthy.

Boyhood, Whiplash, Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma, even Birdman (which I think is very overrated, but still very good) are all superior films to Sniper...

Saw "The Boy Next Door" with J-Lo last week. The boy it is referring to is hot and it was a fairly tight little thriller.

One thing though....they both were talking about "The Iliad" and then he brought her the book and she said, "This is a first edition." I don't think he found a 3,000 year old copy of Homer's classic.

I laughed.

Jupiter Ascending, what a crap load of fun, space opera at its finest, don't listen to the critics, go see it, the visuals are amazing, and it has one of the best come on / pick up lines in any movie, period!

American Sniper, you can't deny this is a stunning film , with a brilliant performance from Bradley Cooper, but jebus I hated it, nasty, vile film.
