Movies, Movies, Movies.....

I saw the Babadook at the weekend and was quite impressed! It was more psychological than I was expecting, a very gripping second half.

Seeing Interstellar later in the week, some reviews have been more tempered than I was expecting so I'm not setting the bar crazily high but hopefully it'll be a solid Nolan film.

Big Hero 6 doesn't seem to have a Korean release date yet... I've always wondered why Disney/Pixar delay so many, is it due to the dubbing over of the voices? But then it always seemed strange how late the UK got the movies as well. Not that it hurt Frozen looking at how many of my students saw it in cinemas, but I saw so many really high quality pirated copies with Korean subtitles played in classrooms before it'd even hit the cinemas.

“Strange Magic,” a new animated film from Lucasfilm Ltd., will be released by Touchstone Pictures on January 23, 2015. “Strange Magic” is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night's Dream.” Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic, which created the CGI animation for 2011’s Academy Award®-winning film “Rango,” bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects.

With a story by George Lucas, “Strange Magic” is directed by Gary Rydstrom (“Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation,” “Lifted”), produced by Mark S. Miller (associate producer “Mars Attacks!”) and executive produced by George Lucas, with a screenplay by David Berenbaum (“Elf”), Irene Mecchi (“Brave,” “The Lion King”) and Rydstrom. An extraordinary roster of film, television and Broadway stars lend their voices to “Strange Magic,” including Alan Cumming (CBS’ “The Good Wife,” Broadway’s “Cabaret”), Evan Rachel Wood (“The Ides of March”), Kristin Chenoweth (Broadway’s “Wicked”), Maya Rudolph (“Big Hero 6,” “Bridesmaids”), Sam Palladio (ABC’s “Nashville”), newcomer Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina (“Chocolat”), Elijah Kelley (“Hairspray,” “The Butler”), Bob Einstein (HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Peter Stormare (“Fargo”). Well-known music producer Marius de Vries (“Moulin Rouge”) serves as both the musical director and composer.

It is great to see that despite the total purchase deal with Lucasfilm, Disney is still going to collaborate with George Lucas and continue to pick his brain. I'm seriously hoping that this film has some kind of throwback to Labyrinth... Particularly a reprise of Dance Magic Dance.

I caught Birdman today and liked it quite a bit--even though all the handheld camera work and crazy panning made me feel a bit ill (be advised when watching it on a big screen). The whole movie is shot to look like one continuous take, and Michael Keaton is excellent in it (as are the rest of the cast) as a washed-up movie star trying to make a comeback by producing, directing, and starring in his own play on Broadway.

Just got back from the premiere of Mockingjay, and wow. They turned my least favorite book in the series into my favorite movie in the series. The acting is top-notch and even though there isn't much action there are so many amazing and suspenseful scenes. Highly recommend it.

Good to hear. I didn't really like the 3rd book at all, but now I'm looking forward to the movie a little more.

Just got back from Interstellar. I liked it. But I pretty much like all Space movies. I was one of those totally nerdy kids that went to Space Camp. It seemed like a mix between Sunshine (really liked that movie), and the good parts of Contact (yeah, there weren't too many in that movie). The movie was a little, ok, way over the top on some things but I liked it.

Just saw Mockingjay: Part 1, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I have not read the books, so I didn't know what to expect with the storyline, but it was interesting and kept me into it. The acting was good, with some great performances from the main characters. Not as much violence and not many explosions, but still visually pleasing. Check it out if you have a chance. Looking forward to seeing Part 2 in a year.

Caught Big Hero 6 earlier today. Not the most pleasant theater experience I've had, but the movie is a good bit of fun! Baymax is absolutely hilarious and lovable. Hiro is a great protagonist and the supporting characters are nice, even though they could get kinda annoying at times. Some story points were a bit predictable, but not much of a detriment to the overall film. Overall, action-packed, funny and heartfelt, I recommend checking out Big Hero 6 if you already haven't it. It's definitely worth your time.
