Missed Credits: Coasters you COULD have...

Recommended Posts

I've been to Six Flags Over Texas on several occasions, but it was always during Thanksgiving week (It was the only week of the year that I would drive that far). Anyway, during the "Holiday in the Park" event, they close down nearly half of their roller coasters! I haven't been on Mr. Freeze, Texas Giant, Batman The Ride, or Flashback. I really wanted to try Mr Freeze!

Cedar Point

-Iron Dragon- It was down a lot when we were there. When we finally finished getting all the important credits there was a two hour line. Ill be going back so ill get it then.

-Wild Cat- Long line, not a huge fan of rides like that, so we skipped it.

Kings Island

-Son of Beast- I dont know if this counts since it was closed all of last season, but it counts to me.

I forgot to mention all of KI's kiddie coasters (30 minute wait for all of them, the longest waits in the park!) Roller Soaker (hate getting wet and low-capacity rides. Can you see why I skipped it?) Comet (Hershey, line was too long)

S:EFK, left side. I have riden this thing countless times, both before and after the EFK days. Yet, I STILL don't have my left side credit.

Busch Gardens Tampa-

- SheiKra and Gwazi- It was 2006, and it took me all day to work up the courage to ride SheiKra (I had only just started riding "big" roller coasters that morning, courtesy of Scorpion ) but by that point we had to leave. I think that we simply ran out of time for Gwazi.

Geauga Lake-

-Villain and Steel Venom- Steel Venom down during my trip in 2006, and I didn't have enough time during my 2007 visit to ride Villain. There wasn't much of an opportunity for me (or anyone, for that matter) to go back to GL and pick up that missed credit in 2008!

Kings Island-

- Flight of Fear and Invertigo- Invertigo went down just as we were lining up, and FoF's wait time was simply too long for the few hours we stopped by the park. I do have my KD FoF credit now, though, so I'm less concerned about hitting it up at KI. That doesn't mean I won't swing by if I get the chance sometime during Haunt!

^^Would the two sides on Escape From Krypton really count as two credits anyway? I wouldn't have thought to count them as such.

Which makes me wonder how you decide whether a twin-track roller coaster counts as one or two credits. Like, it seems obvious to me that Colossus or Gemini only count as one, regardless of whether or not you rode both sides. But people count Deuling Dragons as two, right? So how about Lightning Racer? And by that logic, what about Rolling Thunder at GAdv? If that can be counted as two, then I guess I missed a credit there inadvertently. Crap. Okay, end ramble.

^Just another "different for everyone" deal, like many other aspects of credit counting. Personally, I count each track of any multi-track coaster as a separate credit, even if the two sides are identical.

The only regret I've had about this is if I want to find out what percentage of, say, existing wooden coasters I've ridden according to RCDB, or how many I have left to ride, I have to subtract one side of each coaster I have two credits on. That means I've ridden 68 woodies, not 72. And my "RCDB-recognized" steel count is even more confusing, as I freely count carnival coasters. But overall, I've always been mostly fine with my liberal counting choices.

Hmm. Interesting. I have never sounted carnival coasters or twin tracked. Now I'm kicking myself for not picking up the extra credit on Colossus. Not really so much for Rolling Thunder, as it was probably the worst ride I've ever been on. That brings me to another question:

When a ride recieves a makeover, does it count as a new credit? For instance, I wouldn't count Escape From Krypton as a separate credit just because it's cars were turned backwards. By that logic, you could count a lot of other coasters as an estra credit if you ride it during haunt when its running backwards trains, and that would be ridiculous if you ask me. But I would probably count Steel Phantom and Phantom's Revenge as separate credits. Or New and Old Texas Giant. Is that justified?

Okay, I'll admit that I have skipped a few coasters before, especially last year when I was vacationing in California and visited Six Flags Magic Mountain. Even though it was Monday, the park was very crowded (unless you rode the older rides, especially the flat rides, then they were walk up to them and ride), so I had to be very selective on which coasters to ride and which I could skip. X2 and Deja Vu were high on my "must ride or die" list so they were the first two coasters I went on. I couldn't ride Superman nor Goliath because both of those coasters were shut down (The first one was being remodeled back then, the other was just pitching up a hissy fit). So I skipped Viper because I rode many looping coasters before, skipped Riddler's Revenge because I don't care for stand-ups, skipped Batman because I rode many Batmans in other Six Flags parks, and skipped Scream because I rode plenty of floor-less coasters (I'm talking about the Dominator at Kings Dominion).

Another time was in 2001 when I visited Six Flags Great America (it is near Chicago, Illinois) and the park was CROWD-ED that day I arrived. I had only seven hours to enjoy the park, so I did one tour around the park riding everything I could in those short seven hours. There were only three coasters I decided to skip: Deja Vu (It wasn't running that day, no surprises there), Batman - the ride (During my vacation tour on that year I rode plenty of Batmans, so I figured I could skip this one), and V2 (I saw how crowded the lines were, so I decided to not ride it; besides, I was going to Six Flags Ohio in a few days and I could ride their version of the V2 coaster there - which I did - 3 times, because there was no line!)

Other than those times, I try not to miss any coasters whenever I'm traveling. At my home park of Kings Dominion and holding a Platinum Pass, I can easily skip any coaster I want knowing I'll come back another time to ride it whenever the lines are short (This is especially true to the Volcano - if you don't ride it first then you'll be waiting a long time to ride it later in the day).

"Are you done yet? I miss you."

I have quite a few coasters I missed out on, including some that were running and had short lines. I missed out on several when I was in my teens and early 20's due to a severe case of coaster-phobia, including the old Swartzkopf shuttle loopers at KD and BGT. I also missed out on the woodie that was at the now defunct Circus World, but even if I had wanted to ride it I was a child then and might not have made the height restriction. I also passed on a couple of carnival-type coasters at the LA County fair years ago, as SFMM was my home park and I really had no desire to ride those coasters and I wasn't much into keeping credits then.

I also missed Xcelerator at KBF as it literally opened maybe two or three days after I moved back to Maryland.

Kiddie coasters are also ones that I routinely pass on, unless I'm with someone who really wants the credit (and they have to be the ones where childless adults are allowed to ride).

As of late, in the last few years, I've also passed on a few coasters due to things like crowding and heat combined with unpleasant characteristics such as head-banging and extreme roughness. I was at SFOG a couple of years ago (that summer when there was that terrible heat wave in the southern US) and I passed on Ninja (at the time I thought it was an old Arrow looper and I didn't feel so good because of the heat and I just couldn't deal with a head-thrashing, but being that it is a Vekoma it would have been the same sort of thing so just as well). I also believe that I missed the Georgia Cyclone; not sure if it was down or if we were just too hot and tired. I also missed several at SF Great America this past summer due to the park looking like Times Square on New Year's Eve. I did not want to miss most of these but simply was unable to do everything I wanted to do in a full day. American Eagle was down so I would have missed that anyway, but I missed V2, Demon and Iron Wolf. I probably wouldn't have done the kiddie coasters anyway.

And when I went to SF Great Adventure this past September, I passed on Rolling Thunder as my back was acting up bad that day and I didn't want to make it any worse.

Never missed a credit (eventually/nor intentionally) with the exception of "The Bat" at King's Island. The year we visited the park it was "shut down" that day for mechanical reasons,(although my friend at the time had ridden it just a couple days earlier) and by the time I got back to the park with my family a year or two later it was just 'gone'. Althought I "did" get to ride "Vortex" the year it debuted on "The Bat's" old stomping ground.

And:

"Rail Blazer" at Six Flags Over Mid-America (SFSTL now)- we were planning a family trip to the park and after the accident on "RB" my parents switched gears and we went to Cedar Point instead. Had we gone just 3 weeks earlier (as orginally planned by my folks) we would have gotten to ride, although by no means am I diminishing the seriousness of the fatality that occurred on it.

When I went to Vegas in 2005, my friend and I decided to head to the Stratosphere. We both got tickets to do the Big Shot (didn't really care about riding High Roller as I hadn't officially gotten back into coasters at the time) but he got sick while waiting in line and had to go back to the hotel. So, I ended up going up in the tower with his ticket as well, rode the Big Shot once and decided to give the extra ticket to the ride op. He asked if I was sure I didn't want to ride again or ride one of the other rides with it. The High Roller just looked dull to me so I passed and went back down. I "slightly" regret that decision but not really.

It was a cool idea to put a coaster up there but it was just a meh ride that didn't even go over the edge. I think if they redid the coaster they would make it better this time around based on what they have up there now.
