I actually think it's neat that both languages are used. Given the restaurant's location in an area where Spanish is a primary language for many, it looks as though some thought went into targeting and appealing to a wider demographic customer base, which I'll bet generates a little more profit. I'm not saying that moves like this should persuade native Spanish speakers should dismiss learning English while living in the U.S.--learning the language of one's new home country should be a priority for sure--but I don't think a little bilingualism hurts, either, especially in something as casual as a fortune cookie, or in how you said you're teaching KT some Spanish (I wish I could have learned something like that so young!).

^Trust me though, where this Chinese Restaurant is located there are VERY little Spanish clientel. There are many more Asians the visit the restaurant. Plus even if you were Spanish wouldn't you want to learn some dialect of the food you're eating?

Taking the effort to learn something? Pfft.

I mean, why learn a new language when the country you emigrated to does everything in its power to cater to you anyway?

I hear ya, though. It grinds my gears too.

My neighbors have been here for fourteen years. They still avoid speaking english, especially when the cops arrive.

I have no patience for this crap. I would never go to another country to live, and expect them to have things in english, or expect them to understand me. Learn the goddamn language if you're going to be a part of the United States.

The USA is no longer a melting pot, but rather just a bunch of ingredients floating around not mixing.

^There is no "the language" here though, sure most of us speak English, but there's no official language in the US meaning they don't have to learn anything other then what they already know. But I do agree that they should learn more of the language for where they live (and so that I can understand them *cough* most of my family *cough*).

The modern fortune cookie were invented in California, just keep that in mind, so it's not like it's violating some ancient Japanese tradition by including Spanish in the fortunes. here is an interesting article on them being derived from Japanese culture not Chinese.

So does that mean that the Chinese word or saying that's usually on the back of a fortune wasn't there at all? In that case, I'd be a little irked if I were an Asian customer there. Even though I never remember them afterward, I like learning random things like that--and I'm sure I would if I spoke Spanish, too. In theory, though, I still don't think languages besides English in a fortune cookie are a bad idea, as long as whatever's printed represents the major demographics of a particular restaurant's customer base and doesn't lose the Asian influence that is supposed to be a part of the eating experience.

And you're right. Although English isn't technically the official language, it really is.

I have nothing against anyone coming here to make a better life for themselves and their family, I do have an issue if it's just to make more money, and not be a part of the American society.

Ehhh, I just can't get upset about it. Its like complaining that Taco Bell is mexican food dumbed down and made safe for Americans. Its a prepackaged fortune cookie they probably buy by the case. Maybe the ones with Spanish on the back were on discount? LOL

12/19/09 - The most messed up dream!

I had a really random sequence of unrelated dreams last night, I don't remember all of them, but one of the highlights was I went into the bathroom and there were a ton of clothes in the toilet. I remember yelling at Robb because he had SEVEN pairs of his shorts in the toilet. There were other clothes in the toilet as well, but for some reason that was okay. It was only the shorts that were a problem and I easily flushed away all the other clothes.

I'm pretty sure DJ Lance was also involved in one of the dreams!

Absolutely right.

Some women complain about their guys not putting the seat down. Had Robb done that, would you have seen the shorts? Perhaps it's a sign that Robb needs to do his own laundry (if he doesn't already).

I like dreams. They're like free entertainment.

Perhaps Elissa is subconsciously trying to rid Robb of his current attire.

Most guys will keep old clothes (especially shorts or Boxers) until they are completely falling apart.

Besides most wives dress their husbands anyhow, maybe Robb will have some shiny new threads heading his way soon.

Aww. It was just a dream? I was hoping to hear about Robb actually throwing his shorts in the toilet. But hearing about Robb doing that in a dream is the next best best thing.

I had a VERY disturbing dream, last night, with Robb in it. It involved "bag tag" with a toaster. Perhaps I've been spending too much late night time on TPR.

12/22/09 - Florida vs. California

Wow, it's so hard to explain and there are so many tiny examples just from our random outings today...Floridians are just so much more polite and nice than Californians. Stuff is also just so much cheaper...ugh, I really want to move back here. I don't really want KT growing up in California. I gotta get her out before she's like 5!!!

The amount of excuse me's and smiles I saw and heard today are more than what I've heard the last year in California.

BTW Waffle House and Carrabbas > Any restaurants in California!!!!

Posted

Having lived on the Space Coast for a few months now, I can honestly say that Floridians are a lot nicer than I thought they'd be! I still don't like all the aggressive driving, but at least they know HOW to drive for the most part. But yeah, we have a Waffle House, Carrabba's and Steak 'n Shake within 5 minutes walking distance of campus, and that's pretty awesome. I still desparately want to visit California, but that's they keyword... visit.

Home for the holidays with the family, Elissa?

Maybe it's just because I've been in So Cal my whole life...but all the horrible people don't really bother me that much anymore. I'm probably just so acustomed them, for the most part I tune them out without even thinking about it. But I know they exist almost everywhere in So Cal.

The last time I can think of that I noticed all this stuff was when I was in a rush to get somewhere, but had to stop at Target first. Then I realized how frustrating people can be. People blocking the parking garage for 10 minutes to wait for that slightly closer spot, blocking the shelf you need to get to because they are on their cell phone, and so on.
