Coasters 4 ever Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Were any of you afraid of some roller coasters as a kid? Did you just go on them all? I am afraid of heights. That's weird because I like looking down during the lift and seeing how high the car is getting.
Sir Clinksalot Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was. I wouldn't even go on the Disneyland coasters until I was about 9. Of course, once I did that was the end. I'm glad at least one of my kids isn't afraid of coasters, and the other is getting there.
Coasters 4 ever Posted May 14, 2005 Author Posted May 14, 2005 I'll probably go on Steel Force and not be afraid anymore. I figure that going on my first hyper at the age of 10 would make for almost a lifetime of not being afraid of coasters or heights!
SharkTums Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I didn't like coasters till I was about 12. I wouldn't even ride the Disney Stuff! My best friend from New York came down and made me ride all of the coasters at BGT and I ended up liking them! I went back later that year when Kumba opened and loved that as well! That pretty much started it all! Elissa "Mmm Kumba" Alvey
Angry_Gumball Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was 13 before I hit my first inversion: a Vekoma Boomerang (Knott's Boomerang to be exact) although I rode some of the bigger coasters (well not that big) like Giant Dipper and Grizzly (boo!) when I was younger.
Sir Clinksalot Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I find it so wierd that we were all so much older, yet our daughter went on CA Screamin', Goliath, Superman, Ghostrider, etc when she was only 7. She's only 8 and has already been on Maliboomer. They were both only 3 when they started going on Matterhorn, Space Mtn, Big Thunder, etc. I guess it's all about the parents and not letting them be afraid.
vertgforces Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 i was always afraid to go upside-down....but heights didn't bother me much (but i wouldnt ride hypercoasters), once i rode viper at SFDL my upside-down fear was gone, and after millenium force i could ride anything (except stand-ups ) note- its wierd, i pretty much always loved roller coasters, even wen i was afraid to ride them...i just liked watching them
YoshiFan Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 When I was a kid, I sometimes went on tame coasters like the Zamperla Dragon coaster but I didn't start going on full size coaster (Sky Princess at Dutch Wonderland or Big Thunder Mountain at Disney World), until I was 12.
ebl Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was absolutely terrified of the Matterhorn when I was a kid, but around age 12 I woke up and realized that these contraptions are kinda fun. The rest is history. Eric
Zoltan_Kodaly Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 As a kid, I went on all the Disneyland coasters, but didn't even realize they were roller coasters; because they're so well themed, I just thought they were no different from Splash Mountain or Mr. Toad. I was absolutely terrified of the Corkscrew coaster at my local park, though. I went on that at maybe age 9 and then realized that the DLR mountains were coasters too, and felt foolish for ever having been scared of the Corkscrew!
benzo41190 Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 My first reall coaster was Viper at SFGAm on its first year of operation. I was seven then and it took me till I was nine to go on full scale looping coasters. Iron Wolf was the one. Yah.....Viper turns 10 years old! One of Six Flags best maintaned Coasters, It still looks in very good shape and runs very well. Now Viper has very shiny trains. I LOVE VIPER!
X Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was NEVER afraid of roller coasters, but heres how I realized to like them. I was 7 when I overheard these 2 kids talking about how scary Collosus was. I had ridden Gadgets Go Coaster and Matterhorn and loved those, so I went to Magic Mtn and became a coaster enthusiast. I remember a funny story from my first time at SFMM. I went on Psyclone for the first time, (It din't know it was so rough). After we rode, I said "Now I know how Justin felt when Corey beat him up!" That is hilarious! Kevin"I still don't like Corey or Psyclone"Bujold
What Now Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was scared of coasters for most of my childhood. In fact, I rode Matterhorn when I was 12, and I cried and cried and refused to ride it for several years afterward (I was 16 when I rode it again). The coaster that "cured" me was Goliath at SFMM.
CoasterFanatic Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I always feared coasters because my brother used to force me on them before I was "ready". Eventhough I had already rode Corkscrew (Pavillion), Racer (Kennywood), and a few others, the first adult coaster that I really enjoyed was the Gemini at Cedar Point at around age 12. The coaster that most likely turned me into a nut was the Beast the next summer.
PKDFreak Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I wasent...I rode the Mindbender at SFOG at four years old! That was my first coaster ever!
Xxcrazzy_goodxX Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I guess I stopped being afraid of roller coasters when I was 8-9. Even though I wasn't really afraid of them. I posted this somewhere else before, but I'm guessing that thread is long gone so...whatever. Anywho, my first roller coaster was Superman Ride of Steel (like I said, when I was 8-9); and from what I've heard I guess it wasn't too far after its opening date. At that time, I didn't even really know what a roller coaster was so I was just thinking "bleh." And I ended up liking it. My sister on the other hand, is afraid of roller coasters and she's 11. She goes on the Silver Comet at Fantasy Island, but that's it unless she's hiding something from me. She makes me put my on arm over to her seat to hold down her lap bar, but it's a start.
ChrisFL Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 My father took me on space mountain when I was 3 years old (don't know how, but he did) and also went on the Busch Gardens log flume when I was 4...traumatized for about several years after that, I wouldn't go on any other rollercoasters until I was 15, went back to Busch Gardens and got up the willpower to ride all of the coasters there, starting with Scorpion and ending with Kumba.
Coasterlicious Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 My first roller coaster was the Viper at SFDL....and for years I would go on every coaster but I always was a wimp when it came to the Superman.. but then I finally got on it when I was 13 and Its one of my favorite coasters now.. and on the 27th I will be going on MForce and Dragster.. for the first time..
Coaster Palooza Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I wasn't afraid of coasters so much as I was afraid of the loops and some heights. As a kid, Demon's 9 story drop at PGA pretty much got me over my fear of coasters, loops and heights.
coasters 4 me Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 My first real coaster was Dragon Khan at 8years old. that was serious for me at that age. But before that, i was obscessed with them when i was like 6. We went to alton towers and i was too small to get on the rides then, but i was going mental because i wasnt allowed on them.
c0sterfreek Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Yes i was afraid as a kid...Actally all the way till 3 years ago  . Ive been playing the games for 10+ years but i was scared to death of the things. ONe day i decited just to face my fears and i got off and now i cant stay off of them . Chris
robbeal Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was scared of coasters until 2001. It took a college trip to Disneyland Paris to sort me out. First ever coaster was Space Mountain!
Token Yankee Guy Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I was scared of coasters until 2000, when my sister worked me up on the coasters at SFNE. Then once she finally got me on Superman, I was hooked.
J man Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 I was only about half scared of roller coasters. I would go on all the ones at disneyland because they didn't seem all that big and they didn't go upside down. It was the BIG coasters with inversions that scared the crap out of me.
