I love how the new TTD paint job is so bright it makes it look like it's cgi.

 

 

I'm curious if since Gatekeeper is so visible and is the focal point of the main gate if CP will keep up on its paint job more frequently than most of its coasters and rides?

I highly doubt it. I venture to say that the colors will get as faded as Raptors were before they do anything about it. (But this is just an assumption.) I mean look how long it took for Raptor or MF... or even TTD to get repainted. Look how bad they looked before Cedar Point did anything about it.

Just in case anyone was curious/interested, there was a new blog entry posted on the Valravn page!

 

Hey everyone – I’m Adam, Valravn’s Project Manager, and you’ll see me throughout the construction process as we make our way toward opening the tallest, fastest & longest dive coaster in the world next spring. You’ll also hear from a few other folks throughout the winter, so keep checking back.

 

Right now, you’ve probably noticed that we’re lifting the very first pieces of Valravn’s steep, 47-degree lift hill into place. And we’re doing it with a massive crane. A big, tall, heavy Manitowoc 16000, to be exact.

 

This crane is capable of lifting a lot of weight at certain heights and angles, but in general, it can handle a weight limit of 40 tons up to a height of about 446 feet. Obviously, with Valravn being 223 feet tall, we’ll be just fine. To lift the highest pieces, the crane will need to extend about 75 feet taller than the ride itself, so to about a height of almost 300 feet.

 

Normally, the Manitowoc is used in heavy construction, so we’re talking power plants, steel mills, bridges and other big projects. Currently, it’s on assignment at Cedar Point building a roller coaster. If it had an Instagram account, the photos it would take would be pretty amazing.

 

Because the crane is so heavy, it needs to sit and move on “crane mats.” They help distribute the weight under the crawlers (the wheels underneath the crane), and the soil here really isn’t soil – it’s mostly sand, so stability is key.

 

Overall, things are starting to kick into high gear, and you’ll start to now see big things happen. Station platform footers are being finished, park utility lines are being connected and moved, and of course, the lift hill is now going vertical. Weather permitting, we’ll be lifting steel now through January/February, so keep an eye on the webcams and the construction gallery for videos and photos.

Hopefully. Apart from capacity, Gatekeeper's looks are the only thing it has going for it (to me, at least). It's a truly great-looking POS.

Hopefully. Apart from capacity, Gatekeeper's looks are the only thing it has going for it (to me, at least). It's a truly great-looking POS.

 

Great! Don't ride it, and tell your friends how bad it sucks too, so they don't ride it! Smaller lines for the rest of us

 

The ride may not be everyones favorite ride, but calling it a POS makes you sound like a POS!

Either I mis-read or someone misinformed me. I was told 40 tons 446 ft max lift.

 

If the lift capacity is really ten times that, my entire post is invalid.

 

I think maybe he just missed a zero when typing that. (Typo's happen.) According to manitowoccranes.com The people who make the crane... say that it can lift up to 400 tons.

 

Granted, I don't really know that much about cranes, I'm just going based off of what I have read...

I think that's the weight. Right above that is the winch power of 35000lbf.

Im trying to get my parents to take a family trip this summer to CP, when would be a better time to go, either mid may when they open full time or mid august? It would only be for about 2 or 3 days.

 

I would say mid August. Mid May is so iffy with weather and operations.

 

Also, most shows are still going on in mid August. In May, most of the shows have not even started yet.
