Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

p. 2030 - Top Thrill 2 announced!

Recommended Posts

The new roller coaster won't be named Valravn. The parc has abandonned the use of that name because it is now associated with the Raptor incident...

"Magicmountainlover" got that pic from Coaster Studios, an account that has no more information about the situation than any other enthusiast out there. He literally just posts rumors and claims them as facts he got from an "insider". People act like he's a Coaster God, when really, he's just a 16 year old dude who likes to act like he's way better than the rest of us just because he has a following of enthusiasts who actually think he has "inside sources".

Just cause a 15 year-old posted that on Instagram does not make this stupid claim correct. That is NOT a source. Can everyone PLEASE stop spreading this ridiculous rumor?

Pretty sure the average visitor to CP doesn't even know about the name Valravn being used, how is it associated with the Raptor incident?

Raptor is a dark name because raptors are birds of prey. Iron Dragon is a dark name because dragons.

Skyhawk is a dark name because hawks are birds of prey.

Mean Streak is a dark name because mean.

I doubt they're going to change the name.

Count me in the camp of being "shocked", if they were to change the name. Creating some distance between the accident, and the announcement, makes sense. Changing the name would not. Care to wager a guess on how many people that ride Rougarou every day, have NO idea about that particular (dark) legend?

Actually, here's an idea - instead of installing metal detectors, why isn't there security hanging out in the onride photo booth, and every person they see with their cell phone out on the ride, escort them out of the park and trespass them from ever coming back.

This. Also I'm really surprised none of you have mentioned, or maybe they don't do this anymore, that using a cell phone on a ride in Ohio is actually illegal - the last few times I've been to KI and CP, the ride ops mentioned it on the overhead on numerous rides and I watched the Gemini op one time stop the blue train about an eighth of the way up the lift hill to walk out on to the track and tell someone to put their phone away. I mean - if it is actually illegal in the state, there really should be repercussions akin to Rob's suggestions. I feel like doing anything else illegal would also get you kicked out of the park.

I have to admit that I have seen some very interesting posts since the date for the announcement was set and this thread kicked into high gear.

Here are my faves thusfar...

* Valravn is a complete hoax - it won't be a coaster, but a dark ride instead

* A 12 year old complaining about CP getting a dive coaster with an uninspired layout. Seriously? I would have absolutely pooped a brick if CP would have installed anything like the Valravn renderings when I was 12 years old!!! I literally crapped with glee & delight around the same age when they announced Iron Dragon and Thunder Freaking Canyon!

* CP has been building a lot of forceless coasters lately

* CP should get a GCI and then RMC Mean Streak because they don't currently have any decent wooden coasters (Blue Streak - cough)

* 50/50 love/hate for Maverick/Raptor with most people hating both

Thought I would add that one to the list as I am still trying to wrap my head around how the Raptor incident would be associated with the new coaster not being named Valravn.

So riddle me this...

IF!

And this is a mighty and stupidly big if...

If this were to actually be true (although I am fairly certain that it isn't) and CP is going to scrap a concept that probably took a year or more to design and come up with a new bird designed ride that wouldn't be associated with monsters, evil, death or anything that sounds scary or macabre...what would it be?

Robin's Roost? (nope, robins eat worms and that's cruel)

Big Snowy Owl? (nope, they eat rodents at night)

Duck Hunt? (nope, it would favor shooting of guns/animals & also...Dick Cheney - shudder)

Crow's Nest? (nope, crows eat carrion - AKA DEAD ANIMALS!!!)

Gosh, I'm stumped...what actually could they rename it where it wouldn't have an evil connotation & people wouldn't associate it with a meat head that died breaking the rules while trying to retrieve his cell phone underneath another roller coaster?

It's not directly illegal in the state of Ohio. What that saying from the ride hosts comes from is the rider safety act which in paraphrased terms says riders my obey all posted and verbal policies of the park. So technically since it is a rule that is posted and verbally communicated to guests, you could twist an argument to say cell phone use is illegal. However, please don't think the authorities are out looking for all of the violators of a park policy. The law is in place for liability reasons.

In the end, the ride hosts are being snarky when they say that.

"The vegetraian penguin who was climbing over a rock to find a mate but then fell off the rock twice and began flapping aimlessly about the ice and ending up right back where he started roller coaster"

It's not very catchy but you didn't specify how stupid the answer could be.

Good to know - because I know I heard multiple ride ops say "It is illegal in the state of Ohio to use a phone/camera while the ride is in operation." My last visit to CP (which was a few years ago) and at KI, (more recently) I heard it on more rides than less, which is why that stuck with me. I was also interested in it because, it seemed awfully specific. Thanks for the clarification. Could be a useful piece of litigation regardless to delve a bit deeper into regarding the aforementioned issues.

I saw this on Facebook and I can't help but have chuckled

I know it is a "tragic situation," but ... he did it to himself... I can't help but to ... ALMOST ... not care. I mean, I know that sounds heartless, but seriosuly. . . He knew what he was doing when he climbed the fence. Roller coasters are huge, fast moving, heavy pieces of machinery. I just can't find myself caring much when someone steps into the path of the coaster.
