The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

2016- Flat

2017-Waterpark

2018-Giga

2017 and 2018 may switch.

What I expect:

2016- Kiddie Coaster

2017- Removal of a major ride

2018- Small coaster addition + refurbishing of an old coaster

2019- nothing

2020- Park closes

What I hope for:

2016: Focus on repainting rides, redo theming, improve ride operations, improve marketing

2017: 2 Crazy innovative flat rides that the GP will love

2018: Worlds tallest coaster, who wouldn't want to visit the park?

2019: Nothing

2020: Everyone complains about the park being a mess again. Just like old times

Why would you expect that? Is the park not profitable?

I legit see world's tallest Giga. It would be from B&M.

Also I'm hearing the sky tower repairs of the elevator may be too high a cost to govern reopening it any time soon.

Sounds like the Knott's octopus took a stop at Magic Mountain!

Was just at the park, X2 was closed because of the wind and when I went back later, the employee said they got a call saying to not open it at all today. IDK if there's something wrong with it or if it's just cost/laziness since the park wasn't too busy today. Do they do that??

I also never saw Viper or Lex run, there may have been others but those were the only ones I noticed.

The lines didn't seem too long, about 30 minutes for Tatsu, 30 min for Superman, 15 for Goliath. YOLO line seemed pretty short but got a bit longer towards the end, I got in line around 5:30 and found out why. It was having problems. It went back to working but then right around 6:00 went down again. People were stuck in the tunnel for about 15 minutes. They got it back working and I ended up being the 2nd to last train and rode in the front. I haven't ridden in the front in a long time and absolutely loved it! I actually think I prefer the front than the back! It had problems again so we couldn't get off right away but they got us off relatively quick.

Also, I ended up riding with a man visiting from Brazil who said his friends told him Magic Mountain was the best amusement park in the states. I was kinda like, "Umm, I disagree, there's a better one in Ohio. But Magic Mountain does have the most coasters!" He also did a hilarious parody of how rough Ghostrider is now. He couldn't remember the name but he said, "The one that goes like this," and shook himself up. LOL!!

On most days if it is closed due to winds, if they can't get it open in the first two hours it won't even open at all. Even if the wind has stopped. They just make the employees make excuses so they don't have to open it.

The rule pretty much is if hey can't open it within the first half hour of the day, they aren't gonna open it at all.

There has been one exception to this: I've seen it open at 5PM with a 9PM closing. This was four years ago, however.

I would definitely agree with you that Cedar Point is a better all around amusement park, but keeping that in mind I find that the coasters at Magic Mountain beat out the intensity of the rides at Cedar Point, hands down. Even more so when MM had Deja Vu.

Just my opinion, don't get me wrong I love Cedar Point, I just found myself a bit disappointed with many of the ride experiences not living up to their hype.

Sky Tower, Lex Luthor, and X2 (in that order) are the first things to close in wind. Even the slightest breeze can close Sky Tower (if it were open), they really only open it if it's dead calm. I wonder if wind causing the tower to sway causes problems with the elevator system.

Viper must have had unrelated issues, I've never heard of it closing for wind or precipitation unless it's severe.

Objectively I don't think cost or laziness would shut down X2. It's one of the marquee attractions, they're going to want it open when possible. If cost were going to shut something down, it'd be Superman as it requires a lot of power and is the most expensive ride in the park to operate, supposedly by quite a bit, which im guessing is why they don't usually run both sides.

Magic Mountain is so hit and miss. Who knows what kind of day you'll have no matter the conditions.

X2 will valley in the wind. It has done it during test runs. But I don't think higher up staff minds keeping it closed to keep running costs down for the day (let's be honest, the SF staff does not care whether you get to ride it or not once you've paid to get in). Lex Luther likely has break downs when the tower is swaying too much due to high winds, so they would rather never mind opening that either. Viper pretty much runs no matter what, can't remember it ever being closed, so something else must have been going on.

IMO the park honestly doesn't care if it's a marquee attraction or not. I think the typical park guest just associates "laziness" with the terrible attitudes of the park employees and ride operators who still to this day do not care about the experience of the paying guest.

Yes. After TC, I would be so happy if they spend the entire next decade adding no new rides, just focusing on park repairs only. The addition of TC is exactly what is park needs to round up its coaster lineup, so after that they should just stop building coasters entirely and focus on making a guests day great while he is not on a coaster.

Seriously. They need to round out the offerings and park experience a bit.

Just saw a photo update of the park, including some shots of Jet Stream. Am I the only one who thinks this ride looks in bad shape? The flume appears to be in disrepair. I wonder how much more life it has, honestly. If only this could have been removed instead of Log Jammer, though I suppose the front of park location was in higher demand.

it does look crappy, imo. all the water leaks and surface rust. just a bit of fiberglass and paint would make it look great. hopefully, they are making it look better now. i thought log jammer was such a better layout and looked great. i thought the scenery was so much nicer around log jammer, too.

(let's be honest, the SF staff does not care whether you get to ride it or not once you've paid to get in).
I'm glad you're not running the park, because that's not true at this or any business that charges admission.

They make a lot of money on concessions and in-park sales, and the rides keep you in the park longer buying more food, drink, and merch. If the marquee coasters are broken down, I'm going to leave the park faster and the park will lose money that I would have otherwise spent while in the park. Now think about season pass holders - they didn't pay admission to get in, the money they spend in the park is the only money the park is making that day. The more/bigger rides broken down the faster people will leave. This is basic business 101, even SFMM knows this.

I'm sure they do care more about X2 being closed than they would say Apocalypse or Scream, it does make a difference in money made or lost.

THANK you. I was just about to say this. It's all about the experience. If a headlining attraction is closed, people are less likely to stay and/or come in the first place. It's the same thing with Tatsu running one train during frightfest. I don't think they did it on purpose, I believe it was more of a staffing issue. They were able to get a second train out in the evening once all the kids areas were closed down.

That would be the typical amusement park business model...but you left out one key variable that always seems to hamper the experience at SFMM: COST. SFMM has a history of being cheap, so it is also very likely that they would keep it closed in the morning and move those employees to other rides in order to save labor costs. Hence the reason why someone posted earlier that they usually don't bother to open it if they can't get it open in the morning.
