I'm pretty shocked to hear that no one has mentioned Big Thunder Mountain's lift hills. I have to cover my ears when you go through the tunnel lifts.

I had my fingers in my ears for the tunnel lifts on Paris' Big Thunder. Still a freaking awesome ride though.

Not sure of the name of the coaster but the loudest coaster I would have come across was a coaster at a park here in Melbourne, Australia that no longer exists called Leisureland.

Kumba at Busch Gardens! But that's the purpose in this case. Kumba in Swahili (I think?) means "roar". But that is the coaster I rode that's pretty loud, so far. Awesome ride, though.

I'll throw in my vote for Superman, however I'm also going to give an honorable mention to Flashback (SFMM) when it used to run. I don't know how many people had the chance to stand over near it while it open, but that coaster had a deafening roar.

Premier Launch coasters are also pretty loud, but I don't think they really compete with Superman.

In terms of Hypersonic, I have some family that used to live near the S&S test ground in Utah. I remember them telling me stories of seeing Thrust Air 2000 (later Hypersonic) test and how incredibly loud the ride was. Apparently on a quite day they could hear it for quite some distance from the facility itself.

The single loudest moment on a coaster I've found would easily be the lift hill of Steel Hawg. It's the only time I've ever actually made an effort to plug my ears on a coaster. It definitely made the hour and a half line that much more annoying. The rest of the ride is just fine, though.

I love the sounds Steel Hawg makes, in a bad kind of way. It’s just so funny to me. When I rode it I had fun standing in line and just watching it for awhile afterwards listening to it go "TSSSCHCSCHCSSCHCSCHCSSSCH…" as the cars went up the lift hill. I like the clunks the brake runs make too.

I'd say all the older B&M's and Intamins, before they started putting sand in the supports and stuff...especially Scream! Standing right next to that ride is awful! It's kind of strange how rides like Viper make little noise at all, and rides that were engineered much later, like Scream!, are much louder.

Superman the Escape get's my top vote, though. Sounds like a jet!

Yeah, Walt Disney World's Big Thunder is pretty darn loud during the lifts, but probably the loudest coaster I've been on is Hershey's Great Bear. It just has the iconic B&M roar, and while I like it, I do admit that it is quite loud.

I think Diamondback is going to be very loud especially where it goes over the midways. But from personal experience I'm going to have to say either El Toro during its many glorious moments of airtime when it makes that awesome sound or BTMRR going up the lifts, especially the one in the beginning tunnel.

I'd say any B&M that hasn't had its tracks filled with sand.

Or my local off the shelf coaster, Corkscrew. The sound of the lift chain is so annyoing, you can hear it all the way from like the other end of the park...

I might be working at Playland this year, and I'm going to have to put up with that for like long hours everyday!

Since I worked on Mantis at Cedar Point I would have to agree on it being the loudest coaster that I have ever heard. When the ride is cycling it is EXTREMELY hard to talk to guests when the train is on the first part of the course, even when talking loudly. I can hear the ride in the back of the parking lot and can tell exactly where the ride is on the track at all times just by listening. Fun Trivia... The reason why there was no sand added to Mantis is because of its original name, Banshee. They wanted the ride to be intimidating to guests, like a screaming Banshee flying around the tracks. I really wish they could have kept the name...

How can you tell if a B&M has sand or not? Just by the sound?

Does anyone have like a list of which ones do and which ones don't have sand?

Some that I know that do have sand are Hydra, Talon and Behemoth. Raptor and Mantis I'm sure both don't since they are older B&M's. I'm always surprised that Raptor isn't any louder, but the noise also has to do with the type of wheels that are used. If you can her it roar, chances are there is no sand.
