ntweisen Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 (edited) My brother and I were bored one winter weekend so we decided to enter the contest. We decided to construct a recreation of Demon Drop, the first generation Intamin freefall ride which used to reside at the front of the park and has since been relocated to Dorney Park using the original K'nex roller coaster set. The ride is fully functional and contains numerous details such as the turnstiles for the queue. Let me know what you think! Edited April 14, 2011 by ernierocker
QueerRudie Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Incredible. For YEARS I had wanted to build this type of ride out of my own K'nex collection- but simply didn't figure out the mechanics of it. Instead, I settled for building a -substandard- one out of LEGO instead. This is amazing- down to the turnaround mechanism, and the shape of the tower. I'm thorougly impressed by this- and really think you've got a winner of a ride there. Have you sent the pics into Cedar Point yet? I think they'd be pleased to see this- R.D.
ntweisen Posted March 19, 2011 Author Posted March 19, 2011 Yeah, I entered the Facebook Build Off competition. Not expecting to win but I would love to be in the top three. Thanks for the kind words. I actually attempted to build this same ride years ago. I figured out the elevator lift but I got bored after that and never finished it. When the CP contest was announced I thought it was a good time to see if I could get the whole ride to function properly. Thanks for the feedback!
imawesome1124 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Ummm.... yeah, this is amazing! Very cool idea and you executed it very well.
freefallXL Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 didn´t knew,.. you can building something like this with Knex o.O! VERY WELL DONE. I hope you will be under the top 3!!! Really cool Knexcoaster!!!
tdub96 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Ho. Lee. Mother. of. *insert cuss word of choice here* Thats awesome.
BkkMan13 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Holy nuggets of (bleep)! This is pretty freakin impressive my friend! How exactly did you construct the top of the tower to make the car move forward?
ntweisen Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 The top part was pretty tricky, especially getting the timing down right between moving the car forward and synchronizing with the drop. There's wasn't a lot of room to work with and I barely had enough chain pieces. I have attached a few close-up pictures of the top, though it is kind of hard to see the slider/crank mechanism which controls the drop.
Luxas Surta Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, I have been looking for this kind of knex ride since forever.
Spideyfreak Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Oh Lord, this is truly amazing. I can't see anything else winning that competition!
Ben Burnett Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 You should be the K’nex equivalent of a LEGO master builder. That’s AMAZING. True incredible original engineering. That takes skillz.
ntweisen Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 Thanks for the kind words everyone. I really do appreciate and it encourages me to keep building. So what should my next project be?
mightbeawannabe Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Maybe do a really crazy flat ride...your own or pre-existing...
ntweisen Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 My model was selected as one of the three finalists in Cedar Point’s K’nex Great Thrill Ride Build-Off. You can vote for your favorite creation by liking your favorite ride's photo on Cedar Point's Facebook page. Voting ends at 3:00:00 PM ET on April 12, 2011. The finalist whose photo receives the most “likes” will be the winner! http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=285415&id=10625691462
nowaymang Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I threw a big ol' "like" for you on FB. Good luck.
Buckeye_Ben Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Liked! The mechanics of this are amazing, and the amount of effort you put into it clearly shows. I remember building a K'nex ferris wheel in 2nd or 3rd grade and I was so proud of that thing. Good luck!
CoasterBone Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 There are no words to describe how impressed I am by this build.
alilstronger Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 OMG this is amazing!!!! I don't have the patience to build something like that. I did not even know they still made K*Nex.
BudtheWeiser Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 That is pretty damn cool you got a big like from me.
