Construction work is about to begin on transforming Beijing’s Olympic swimming venue into a world-class indoor waterpark. The Watercube will reopen as the Happy Magic Watercube in summer 2010.

 

The makeover will follow a blueprint prepared by Forrec. The design aims to make the most of the distinctive building where American Michael Phelps made history by winning eight gold medals last August.

 

“The architectural significance of this building and the unique form of the structure required out of the box thinking,” declares Forrec vice-president Anthony Van Dam. “The Watercube is a dynamic space. Every detail has been considered, from theatrical lighting and glass mosaic tiles, to custom props and some ‘first-ever’ attractions.”

 

One of those attractions will be the world’s first RideHouse play structure, complemented by China’s first Aqualoop waterslide, a Tornado funnel slide and many tried and tested waterpark attractions. Underpinning all this will be a sub-aqua theme including animated jellyfish features and special lighting to bring the facility alive after dark.

 

Overseeing construction and park operations on behalf of Beijing Happy Watercube Waterpark Ltd will be Australian waterpark veteran Alan Mahony.

 

“This is an exciting project due to its special location,” he tells Park World. “We are working only with the world’s leading designers/suppliers and putting into place an operational system that will make this waterpark a world leader. The industry in China is growing quickly as the Chinese public is demanding quality waterparks with international operations. The Happy Magic Watercube will be an attraction that Beijing can be proud of.”

 

The waterpark is due to open in June 2010 and all of the attractions are currently under fabrication.

 

It is definitely good to see this Olympic venue get put to use, and from the looks of it, this water park will have an exciting list of attractions. From what the picture shows (if accurate), the park should have a lazy river, a funnel, a bowl and possibly even an AquaLoop.

Yeah, I totally remember hearing at IAAPA that the Watercube was getting an AquaLoop.

 

I think this is a great idea! I just hope it's a success.

As a fan of waterparks, this looks totally kick ass!

 

The whole cake and then some. With mild/family attractions to the thrill seekers slides, could be the next Kalahari of China! Now only if the US could move forward with Las Vegas Wet...

Wow. I never expected this. It'll definitely be the worlds most expensive waterpark structure. I'm not exactly sure what a I think of such a revolutionary structure being used for this, but I guess it is better than letting it go to waste and be unmaintained.

Interesting. That looks pretty awesome. On the plus side it is a great way to use the space. I bet that place probably would have been left to rot. Well, me, not living close to China wouldn't know that for sure.

Jon, I totally see your point, but as a visitor to China over the last two years, this building would have rotted to the ground if they didn't find something to fill it fast.

The Ridehouse will be interesting to watch as it is Proslide's first entry into the water play structure areana which has been dominated by WhiteWater.

Hmmmm...the coaster-nerd side of me says this is an awesome use of the space, but at the same time another part of me feels like it's a slight disrespect to the people who competed there and because of the records set and stuff to turn this into a water park...ehhhh I don't know. It looks cool anyways.

IMHO this fits in well with the Michael Phelps bong hit theme. I think a psychedelic underwater world with slides and amazing colors is the perfect way to memorialize the greatest athlete of 2008.

I think they chose the right name. If this were in the US it would be called "Michael Phelps's 8 Times Phelpingly Awesome Phelps-o-Rama-Land Water Park".

 

 

I still hate the Michael Phelps marketing hype.

Hmmm... I just thought of something... It's not every day that something like this happens.

I mean, in games, movies, and amusement parks concepts you often see magor world landmarks converted into amusement parks/waterparks (Namely in Rollercoaster Tycoon).

 

But this is one of the first times that something like this actually happens! Even if said landmark was already halfway there to begin with.
