terrancew_hod Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Are you calling me fat? You're not fat, you're just "big bonededed" Terry
larrygator Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 You know when you're a little kid and the kid who's a bit overweight bullys everyone?? Same thing goes on here. Are you calling me fat? Is he doesn't call you fat I will. Robb chose all of us to be mods because he trusts us with his investment, TPR. We are volunteers and sometimes we make mistakes. We try to be as even handed as possible. As one of the other mods said, we have a moderator forum that is very active (Hence you might see a lot of posts next to our names and wonder where the hell all our posts are). When we lock someone's post for not using the Search function you will generally see a reminder to use the search function the first time a poster does this. When we continually have to lock threads from the same person for the same reason, we may get a little harsher in our forum comments. However, what you don't see is that we have probably also been sending PM reminders to that poster pleading with them to shape and offering tips. Also, remember there is a reason we correct those who constantly post with slang, bad grammar, spelling errors or internet shorthand. Not only is it difficult for Eglish speakers, but remember TPR is an International site and English is a difficult langauge. Proper writing form is essential in order to continue receiving valuable input from TPR's friends around the world. Look at all the wonderful PTRs we have seen on coasters around the world in just the past 2 months (Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Netherlands, Israel etc...). Do you realize the effort many of our International members go to in order to participate in a foreign language site? Well reading poorly written posts, interpreting slang, and understanding internet shorthand becomes an even bigger challenge.
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Not that my opinion really matters, but I just want to say that I think the Mods here do a great job. I have been a member of a lot of different forums where the Mods are complete jerks. They would run their mouths and ban people for something as simple as not having the same view or opinion as them. I want to say names and websites so bad, but I'll keep this tasteful. I have been reading Coaster and Amusement Park forums for something like 10 to 12 years now, and I've got to tell you... there are none as fun, and care free (Yes, care free!) as TPR, yet TPR manages to keep a certain quality standard that I have never found on another forum. I don't get where all the negativity is coming from. You'd think people were reading another forum, then accidentally posting their thoughts about it here.
Kennyweird Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 ^ Agreed. I have a few grievances, but for the most part Robb, Elissa, and all the mods run this site incredibly well. I think they deserve our respect. reading poorly written posts, interpreting slang, and understanding internet shorthand becomes an even bigger challenge. Even us native English speakers can't read some of them!
the ghost Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 ^^^ Very well said Larry. This site is awesome because we keep rather civil towards each other and still have an awesome time. It is awesome that this site is very "foreign member friendly" because I have never seen a problem with a park index of this size(although, you are the god in that area.) I hope this site always stays like this, and everyone in the forums(besides an occasional select few people) you guys are awesome.
Chris Benvenuto Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I've been a mod for a few short length stints, and believe me reading all that shortened word, slang and bad spelling gets you one HELL of a headache. I really like what the mods do here, and I like how the community is run by Robb, Elissa, mods, etc. It doesn't matter. All I'm trying to say is, take a deeper look at our moderating staff and just try to imagine being in their shoes for a MONTH. No, no even A WEEK and you'll see what they mean by all the problems made by bad posters and troubling members. I've enjoyed the time and work the staff here puts into the site, and I hope they keep up the great work!
phazan Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Moderating just doesn't seem like hard work to me. You think of something clever to say that sounds mean, then post it and lock the thread. Takes like 5 seconds? If I'm missing something here, please tell me. I know I sound like a jerk myself, but I just don't see it I guess. It seems to me that everyone wants to be a mod because everyone sucks up to you. That's just how I see it. Again, not trying to be a jerk, just trying to make sense of it.

I can't speak for here, but I am a mod at other sites and I have had times where I had to think is this something I find mean and not appropiate or something that is to everyone. It may not be hard, but it is harder than you think (to me on the other sites I am on that I mod).

There's more to it than wisecracks and thread locking. You are "missing" quite a bit. TPR's mods have other duties, such as maintaining the site index and Coaster Tube--in addition to keeping the site clear of spam and "policing" the forums to keep flame wars from breaking out and to ensure that posters follow the site's rules. The mods enjoy the site and want it to be the best it can be. Are we perfect? No one is. But we do what we do because we want TPR to be the best theme-park-related site on the Web.

I wonder if this fuzzy wuzzy cat has any history with the "mods" here in TPR. The fuzzy wuzzy seems to be sour at something...
BeemerBoy Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Phazan, you're acting as though you think Robb keeps all the mods locked up in a room on constant alert with no food and water, and they're just waiting to unleash hell on any board annoyance. That's just not true. Okay, except maybe for Matt.

I'd like to see some evidence of this locking with vindictiveness you keep refering too. I haven't seen it in some time. And again, there's a LOT more to modding here than prowling the boards looking to lock a thread, which seems to be what you think we do. Well, Chuck does, but he has to answer to Angus McNasty each night so, we let him slide. Phazan, you're acting as though you think Robb keeps all the mods locked up in a room on constant alert with no food and water, and they're just waiting to unleash hell on any board annoyance. That's just not true. Okay, except maybe for Matt. It's about time someone heard my cries. This closet is dark, and I've been tortured with being made to watch Yo Gabba Gabba for weeks. I can smell the Carrabba's carry out, it's not fair!
cfc Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 ^Matt, be quiet! Robb and Elissa might hear you! You remember what happened the last time you spoke up! The horror! The horror! Sometimes, I just let Angus McNasty handle any moderating chores--he's much tougher than I am.
mcjaco Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 ^Matt, be quiet! Robb and Elissa might hear you! You remember what happened the last time you spoke up! I'm typing as quietly as possible! I need food people! One Magic Mountain turkey leg a week is not enough! I'll also accept care packages of beer. Unless it's bottled in Milwaukee, St. Louis, or Golden, CO.

You seem to think all moderators ever do is lock threads, in which case there would be far fewer than 18 of us. The problem is you only ever see us doing the "nasty" side of helping out with the forums. Every time Larry adds a park to the Index, he doesn't go on the boards and say "hey guys look at me! I've just made this site better, worship me!!". Every time Erik or Tyler finishes editing a segment for the DVD's, they don't make it known to everyone on the site. The only time you see the moderators actually doing anything is when they have to lock threads or edit posts. So please don't judge them based on that when they're actually doing a lot more "behind the scenes" to maintain and improve the site. Phazan, you made a post in a similar vein a few weeks ago in addition to your recent posts in this thread, why do you feel so strongly about this that you have to bring it up repeatedly?

This is more important. Obviously, this is not the way Robb or Elissa would like the community to see TPR.
Hercules Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I helped to moderate Joe's site when it was up for the short time that it was, and even with the low traffic, it was pretty tough. I think he and I were the main ones (and I believe Larry and someone else had access to the mod boards?), and I have to say, moderating the boards when there are spammers, and adding content to the site took up a lot of time. I think I added like 1,200 coasters to the index, and I think it ate up half of my summer. So yeah, I can see how moderating a site that gets thousands and thousands of hits a day can be pretty tough, and it certainly isn't just something where you come up with something witty, and lock a thread just to be a dick. This site is great. Stop your complaining. Robb and Elissa let you post here FOR FREE, while it costs a ton of money to keep the site up and going. I think they have put the site into the hands of a lot of great people, and they are doing a very good job. I'm not sucking up, but if you think that I am, then go ahead and think that - your opinion doesn't really matter to me. Keep up the good work everyone, and thank you to everyone who contributes good content to the site. Jay "The mods are just holding me down!!!!!" Willis

Wow, to be honest I didn't really realise how much all of you did, I knew Larry did the Park Index, but I didn't realise you guys helped with the DVDs as well. My previous post once again stands. MG PS: Phazan, just because we all back up the Mods on what we believe is a fair decision doesn't mean we want their jobs. EDIT: Removed a phrase which I believe was actually too unfair towards Phazan, sorry Phazan for being a bit too harsh!
piers Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 A couple of the mods are pretty sexy so I like to keep them sweet, not naming anyone (like MATT) though...
phazan Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I wonder if this fuzzy wuzzy cat has any history with the "mods" here in TPR. The fuzzy wuzzy seems to be sour at something... I don't have a history with the mods.. And neither did my cat. But i'll bet I will when this topic is locked! ;D haha. I guess I didn't give the mods credit about the other stuff they do (Organizing stuff). That's pretty cool of them. But I still see 13 year olds sucking up, and it still seems like some mods enjoy that and enjoys being a jerk to young kids on the internet(one starts with a W and ends with an S and has an E somewhere in his name..But hey, not saying it's true, that's just how it looks)..And I see a whole lot of "Forgive me if this is in the wrong section". If so many people have to put that before one of their posts, I think that's a little crazy. But whatever, it's not my site so I don't get to choose how it's ran. Remember...JUST AN OBSERVATION that I've made.
Crazy4Coasters! Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Yea I couldn't figure it out if had a personal experience with a "mod" to have a certain opinion on them. No one would get any crap from the mods for voicing their opinion on this forum as long as they express their POV in a sincere and respectful manner just as you are trying to do. I think the "mods" here are happy to hear you out anytime... by the way tell Mr. Fuzzy Wuzzy "nice coat!"
